Creatine Effective as an Antioxidant During Resistance Training Researchers from the Laboratoria de Fisioilogia, UFCSPA/Porto, Alegre, Brazil set out to test that creatine supplementation may provide antioxidant activity by scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) since this has not yet been described in the literature. They investigated the effect of creatine monohydrate supplementation associated with resistance training over maximum strength gain and oxidative stress in rats. Forty male rats were randomly assigned into 4 groups: Sedentary (SED), Sedentary + Creatine (SED-Cr), Resistance Training (RT) and Resistance Training + Creatine (RT-Cr). Results from this 8 week study showed greater strength gains in the SED-Cr, RT and RT-Cr groups compared to the SED group. The RT-Cr group showed the highest maximum strength gain when compared to other groups. Researchers concluded creatine to be an effective antioxidant with supplementation alone and also when it was associated with resistance training. (Stefani GP, Nunes RB, Dornelles AZ, et al. New Meta-Analysis Supports Whey Protein for Improved Body CompositionResearchers from the Exponent,

Inc., Health Sciences, Chicago,

IL conducted a comprehensive

literature search of 14 randomized

controlled trials (RCTs) that

investigated whey protein

concentrate, isolate or hydrolysate

on body weight, bodymass index

(BMI) body fat, lean body mass

(LBM), fat-free mass and waist

circumference in healthy adults.

Results indicated a statistically

signifcant increase in LBM among

studies that included a resistance

exercise component along with

whey protein provision. When

researchers analyzed those weight

loss studies that used whey protein

to replace calories in the diet,

participants had a decrease in body

weight of 9.2 lbs. Researchers

concluded the scientifc literature

supports the use of whey protein,

either as a supplement combined

with resistance exercise or as

part of a weight loss or weight

maintenance diet, to improve body

composition parameters. (Miller

Ashwagandha is Safe and Efective in Reducing Stress and Anxiety in AdultsResearchers from the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Asha Hospital, Pradesh, India set out to evaluate the safety and effcacy of an Ashwagandha root extract in reducing stress and anxiety in adults. Sixty-four subjects with a history of chronic stress were randomized to either the placebo control group or the treatment group given a high-concentration full spectrum Ashwagandha extract for 60 days. Subjects taking the Ashwagandha supplement exhibited a signifcant reduction in scores on all the stress-assessment scales relative to the placebo group. Serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced in the Ashwagandha group, relative to the placebo group. Researchers concluded that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual’s resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.
