One of the functions of the stem is to

support the rest of the plant.

Function = the ‘job’ of each part.

Absorb = to take in or soak something up

Another functions of the stem is to

transport water to the rest of the plant.

Your TaskI want you to search for lots of different stems. You can do this:

- In your garden (if you have one)- When you go out for exercise with a grown up- By using pictures online- By using the pictures on the next slide.

I want you to carefully examine the stems and think about how they are different.

If you have a magnifying glass, use this to look at the stem up close. You may be surprised at what you find.

To record your findings you might:- Keep a diary with notes and drawings.- Write a comparison of two different stems that you find.- Draw the different stems and label similarities and

differences.

Flower = the top part of the plant.

Stem = the long thin part connecting the roots and flower.

Thorns = sharp parts that can grow on stems

Your Challenge

Fill a container with water.

Add lots of dark coloured food colouring or ink (blue ink works best).

Put the flower stem first into the container of water and colouring (white roses work the best).

Keep monitoring the plant over the coming days and see what happens to the flower.
