5037.10 ”Mini Sol” – Solar Thermal CollectorThis vacuum tube solar collector is based on three tubes, connected by the accumulator tank at the top. The superior insulating property of the vacuum tubes allows this type of thermal collector to work in very cold surroundings. Even during winter, the water gets surprisingly hot. In order to avoid boiling the accumulator tank is not insulated. The stand allows the tubes to be tilted and fixed in a number of angles. The rubber stoppers can be removed to allow access to the interior which makes it possible to place one or more thermometer probes.

7960.20 Deep Sea Currents ModelDiscover how the deep sea currents, such as the ocean conveyor belt (the thermohaline circulation), flow with this new model.

This model is an excellent tool for illustration of the deep sea currents that are caused by variation in temperature and salinity. It is specially developed together with Danish High School teachers, and is a highly recommended tool for illustra-ting currents in water. The model helps students to under-stand why warm waters are carried so far north and why cold waters sink due to the increased salinity.

It consists of a tank made of acrylic glass with one of the sides made out of white acrylic. The white side makes it easier to view the sea currents. A special compartment for ice is located in one end and a heat element (not included) is used in the other end in order to illustrate warm water. Food color is usually added to the ice (cold region) to make the currents visible.

7960.10 Ocean Conveyor Belt ModelThis model of the ocean conveyor belt restricts the currents to avoid blurring due to diffusion. The apparatus demonstrates the same phenomenon as 7960.20, but trades realism for clarity.

After filling the apparatus with water, food color is injected into one of the vertical cylinders. After a few minutes the circulation is ready to start: Adding ice or saturated salt water to one of the cylinders makes the water there slightly denser than in the other cylinder.

2874.80 Greenhouse effect setWith this set you can explore the absorption of infrared radiation in CO2. The radiation is produced by an IR source and passes through a gas cuvette before reaching the detector. The IR radiation source consists of a tungsten wire helix, to be powered by a 9 V, 1.75 A power supply, connected to the two 4 mm safety type connectors. The radiation source is provided with a Ø 10 mm mounting rod.The gas cuvette has three ports (pipe stubs) that allow various sensors and gas inlets to be mounted. A reference cuvette (without pipe stubs) is included for a direct comparison with atmospheric air.The detector is a custom made narrow band IR detector – sensible in just the wave length interval where CO2 has a pronounced absorption band. The detector output should be connected to a voltmeter or data logging equipment. The greenhouse effect kit consists of the IR source, narrowband IR detector, measurement and reference cuvettes, stoppers, tubing etc., hose clips, syringe, plastic wrap and O-rings.

Individual components may be purchased separately:2874.30 IR source2874.60 Gas cuvette set for greenhouse effect2874.00 IR detector for greenhouse effect

2770.40 Greenhouse effect demo modelConsisting of two identical Perspex cylinders, this model may be used to illustrate the difference in temperature, when one cylinder is filled with CO2 and the other with atmospheric air. Two sets of stoppers are provided to allow both thermo sensors and ordinary thermometers to be used.Another application is a demonstration of a simple solar thermal collector. The included black rubber sheet is inserted in one of the cylinders, and the two temperatures are again monitored.

4410.30 ElectrometerThis instrument is very sensitive without being fragile. It measures current in the pico-ampere range and charge down to nano-coulombs. As a pico-ampere meter it may for instance be used in photo-electric effect experiments. And with the matching ionization chamber, it can show the weak currents that pass through air when alpha radiation makes it slightly conductive. As a nano-coulomb meter it is a most versatile tool for a lot of electrostatic experiments. The charge integration occurs within the instrument at close to zero voltage, virtually eliminating leakage currents. With a Faraday ice pail and a metal plated ball on a rod, a very persuasive demonstration of electric induction is possible. Another application is determining the capacitance of a plate capacitor with or without a dielectric between the plates.Full scale ranges: ±5, ±50, ±500 pA. ±5, ±50, ±500 nC.

4706.00 Motor-generator modelA ready-to-use setup for demonstrating the generation of either direct or alternating current. Although the AC voltage from this model is not sinusoidal, is goes very well together with the full wave bridge rectifier with LEDs to demonstrate the changing directions of the current. The DC voltage is naturally pulsating. Connect the model to a power supply to make it run as a DC motor.

1990.10 Falling bodies apparatus – linear modelThe apparatus is placed on a corner of a level table. When released, one ball drops vertically while the other shoots out with an adjustable initial horizontal velocity. The balls hit the floor simultaneously, thus demonstrating that the vertical motion is independent of any horizontal motion.

1806.00 Gas law apparatusThis apparatus can be used to investigate all three gas laws – Boyle’s Law, Charles’s Law and Gay-Lussac’s Law. The gas volume is directly read from a scale on the cylinder while a manometer and a digital thermometer provides pressure and temperature readings. The mean temperature of the gas is determined by that of the surrounding volume of water, working as a heat reservoir.

5136.00 Geiger-Müller counterThis brand new GM counter is the most versatile and most easily operated model we have ever made. The counting time can be set to 1, 10, 60 or 100 seconds or set to manual start/stop. Counting may be set to run repeatedly, and you will see the last, complete result in the main display while new counts accumulate in the auxiliary display. The counter accepts both BNC and Jack type GM tubes. With the optional USB connection it interfaces with a computer – and if you need a pulse output for further hardware processing, that is possible too.For demonstration purposes the authentic clicking Geiger-counter sound may be turned on.During the development we also added a few less obvious improvements such as lower overall system dead time and lower current consumption, and we changed the battery type to the cheaper, always available AA-cells. The counter may also be powered from a mains adapter.

IM-157010 Radioactivity meter – Hand Instrument

This is the latest member of Impo’s series of handheld instruments. It allows counting in intervals of 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 100 seconds – and can give the radiation dose per hour, assuming a Cs-137 source. This instrument can be used together with the compact GM tube (5125.18) to

form a very convenient unit – or it can be hooked up to any other

GM tube with a BNC connector. As with the rest of Impo’s handheld instruments, this unit has a build-in data logger and it communicates with a PC or an Impo remote display via the proven RS-232 protocol.

5142.00 Muon ObservatoryEvery second every square meter on earth is hit by more

than hundred muons – elementary particles – with an average energy of about 4 GeV. The muons may be detected directly or via the shower of secondary particles they produce in collisions with ordinary matter. When detecting muons directly, you typically

look for particles that go through two or three different detectors, placed in a line. In this “telescope mode” you only

observe muons from the direction defined by the detectors. In “shower mode” you look for simultaneous signals from three detectors, placed in a

triangle. This arrangement eliminates the possibility of any single particle triggering all three detectors.

This muon observatory provides the hardware for both modes of operation. In the standard configuration 25 steel absorbers, each 3 x 150 x 150 mm, are included. Up to 40 absorbers (20.5 kg!) can be accommodated. In shower mode the distance from the absorber stack to the detectors can be varied. In telescope mode the detector distance can also be varied. Coincidence box and GM tubes are not included.

5138.00 Coincidence boxThis box checks if the input pulses on the selected inputs occur simultaneously – within 1 microsecond. If so, a pulse is generated at the output. One application is detection of cosmic ray muons: A high energy muon can penetrate one GM tube, a thick stack of steel plates and another GM tube, giving rise to simultaneous pulses from the two tubes. It is highly unlikely that any terrestrial source of radiation will result in the same kind of coincidence. In nuclear physics many phenomena are strongly correlated in time and space. A PET scanner is a good example of an instrument that utilizes simultaneous detection of two gamma quanta. With a Na-22 source, two GM tubes and a coincidence box, the basic principles of a PET scanner can be demonstrated. Acommodates GM tubes with BNC plugs or GM sensors with ¼” jacks.

Holder for radioactive sourceThis holder can be placed in the 2946.50 joint link to ensure fixed distances to two detectors in a rotational symmetric arrangement.Useful for studying angular correlation in nuclear decays or positron annihilation.

The holder comes in two varieties: Type 1 is for the threaded Frederiksen sources, Type 3 is for the 12 mm cylindrical sources. (25 mm disc sources – Type 2 – are not supported.)

2770.22 Stefan-Bolzmann LampThis lamp enables you to examine the energy radiated from a hot object – thus demonstrating the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The tungsten filament reaches temperatures above 2,500 K. The filament tempera-ture is deduced from the resistance of the metal. To precisely measure the voltage drop, a separate set of connecters are wired directly to the bulb. Also very useful for studying the inverse square law.

2688.00 Convection chamberTry our new convection chamber. Simple to use with very explanatory results.

With this chamber it is easy to demonstrate how convection affects winds, high pressures and low pressures through the interaction of cold and hot air. The usually invisible convection currents are very easy to see when smoke from burning paper is added through one of the chimneys.

The chamber and chimneys are made of durable acrylic glass and the bottom is comprised of an aluminium tray. Place a tea light on one of the circles on the tray.

7895.10 Biosphere, small – "Garden in a bottle"Try this new smaller “Bottle biology” unit for faster results. This unit makes it possible to create and study a completely closed terrestrial or aquatic environment.

Place a few small potted plants in the box and obtain reliable results within a short period of time.

The rubber lined acrylic lid and the sturdy foldback clips ensure a complete seal of the fauna box. Two large sensors (for example CO2- and O2 -sensors) and one small sensor (for example temperature sensor) can be connected via three holes in the lid. Holes are sealed with the enclosed rubber stoppers when not in use.

7895.20 Soil respirometerThis newly developed soil respirometer offers a simple and reliable way of measuring the CO2 production from soil dwelling fungi, bacteria, collembola, plant roots etc. Faster than using the traditionel 20 liter model.Place the respirometer directly on vegetation free soil or on a potted soil sample, attach a CO2 sensor and a stainless steel temperature probe and start collecting data. The CO2 concentration will increase within minutes and it is possible to produce nice graphs with CO2 production vs. time.

The respirometer is a clear acrylic glass cylinder with three sensor openings in the lid: Two large sensors (for example CO2 – or O2-sensors) and one small sensor (for example temperature sensor) can be connected through the holes. Rubber stoppers are enclosed.

The soil respirometer also offers the opportunity to measure respiration from insects/small animals or as a miniature photosynthesis chamber for small plants/plant parts.Diameter: 100 mm. Height: 124 mm

7802.73 Skin response deviceNew device which measures fluctuations in galvanic skin response (GSR) in humans. Fluctuations in galvanic skin response occur in situations where people are exposed to situations which can cause stress or anxiety.

These situations could be questionings, mental challenges or influences from flavour or sound stimuli. GSR measurements also form part of the much debated “lie detector” tests used past and present all over the world.

The biofeedback is obtained when skin electrodes are placed on two fingertips. Exposal to external stimuli causes changes in the relative conductance over the skin surface of a small electrical current, which runs between the two skin

electrodes. With the GSR-device these measurements can be recorded with a datalogger/interface or a simple voltmeter (none of these included).

This GSR-device has primarily been developed to work with datalogger equipment from Pasco, but will also work with other systems and voltmeters.

The GSR-device is supplied with battery, cables and self adhesive skin electrodes (100 pieces). Not included: Datalogger/interface equipment or voltmeter for data sampling.
