HOW DO WE DEFINE SCIENCE? According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the
definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."
Science is an intellectual activity carried on by humans
that is designed to discover information about the natural world in which humans live and to discover the ways in which this information can be organized into meaningful patterns. A primary aim of science is to collect facts (data). An ultimate purpose of science is to discern the order that exists between and amongst the various facts. Dr. Sheldon Gottlieb
The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by making observations and doing experiments.
The steps of the scientific method are to:
Ask a Question Do Background Research Construct a Hypothesis Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion Communicate Your Results
It is important for your experiment to be a fair test. A "fair test" occurs when you change only one factor (variable) and keep all other conditions the same.
While scientists study how nature works, engineers create new things, such as products, websites, environments, and experiences.
Medicine Science has helped man to study and grow his
knowledge on the human body and contribute towards saving millions of lives worldwide. Various incurable diseases can now be treated with the development and invention of new medicines.
Communication The invention of internet and mobile phones are
perhaps two of the most significant contributions of science to humankind, with respect to communication.
Transportation Automobiles and transport industries cannot be left
behind when it comes to talking of science and technology. Different modes of transport have been developed to carry people, machines and other equipments from one corner to the other, round the globe.
Agriculture Various procedures have been developed to convert
barren lands and deserts into fertile fields that can be used for cultivating crops and providing food for more people.
Entertainment Television, radio, theater, mobile phones, CD players,
iPods, and music systems have been a major source of entertainment to human race. Without science, these would not have been available to you.
VALUES OF SCIENCEIntellectual Value It introduces new ways of thinking and reasoning. It has its own disciplines. It helps to understand, evaluate and solve numerous
social problems of life.
Practical Value We are living in age of science and everything around
us concerns science. Science has revolutionized means of transport. It has reduced the miseries of humanity and enable
them to live loner and happier.
Moral Value Science is a search of truth and reality. Science develops morality by teaching truthfulness. Every scientist is a seeker of truth.
Aesthetic value Every man of science has a passion truth. According to a well known English poet Keats “Truth
is Beauty’ Science is an art, every man in of the science is artist.
Psychological Value The entire teaching and learning process is based on
fundamental principle of psychology. Science develops interest, motivation and makes
teaching learning process effective.
