The Ouija Board
Ouija Board• The planchette, with two or more
people’s hands on it moves to spellout the answer to questions askedthe supposed spirit.
• Each participant is sure they are notmoving the pointer
• Scientists are sure that the motion ofthe planchette is due to the ideamoter(unconscious) hand movements ofthe strongest participant.– In my one Ouija session this was
certainly true. One of the participants, who was blindfolded, said that she knewthe letters before I announced them.
On the Other HandTwo Contrary Case Histories
Dr. Alan Gauld, Ouija case histories
• In July of 1950, a spirit of a soldier killedin WWI uses the board for 11 differentsessions providing 14 stated facts(including his name). 12 were confirmedand none were found false. [Case #47]
• At a series of talking-board sittings inearly 1943, the board is suddenlycontrolled by a very abusive and insultingspirit. After several sessions he turnsfriendly and reveals his name andLondon address which were laterconfirmed. The fact that this spirit, unknown to anyone at the session,"dropped in" uninvited eliminates thechance that the sitters were using anyform of ESP. [Case #46]
The 1912 Dublin Ireland Sittings
• Experimenters blindfolded theparticipants and placed opaqueboards in front of them– Neither stopped the rapid
movement of the traveler to thedesired letter.
– During one session a deceasedsoldier relative of one of the sittersasked that his pearl tiepin be givento his fiancée. He gave her nameand address that were later found tobe correct. Neither the girl or thetiepin were known to his family.

Ouija BoardLiterary Output
• Sax Rohmer creator of FuManchu was told by the Ouijaboard that “CHINAMAN” wouldmake him famous.
• Sylvia Plath The board predictedher fame would come after herdeath.
• Stewart Edward White. The“Betty Books” originated on theOuija board
• Geraldine Cummins, famousspiritualist author, began hercommunications with the Ouija.
• Jane Roberts’ first contacts withSeth was with the board
• Yeat’s was inspired by his wife’sOuija board experiences
Patience WorthThe Most Amazing Ouija Story
1913 to1937
Patience Worth• "Many moons ago I lived. Again I
come. Patience Worth my name.Wait, I would speak with thee. Ifthou shalt live, then so shall I. Imake my bread at thy hearth.Good friends, let us be merrie. The time for work is past. Let thetabby drowse and blink herwisdom to the firelog.”
• These are the first words fromPatience to a high schoolgraduate St Louis house wife,Mrs. Pearl Curran, on her Ouijaboard
Patience Worth• Those words were followed by an
estimated 4 million words (sevennovels plus numerous poems andplays) over the next 25 years.
• Several of the novels won literaryawards and many of her poemswere published in literarymagazines
• She would instantly create poemson subjects provided byspectators and could produceseveral at a session jumping fromone verse to another withoutmissing a beat.
• Note, After several years Mrs. Curranwas able to hear Patience and dictateher stories. Many mediums havediscovered their talents through the useof the Ouija board
Patience Worth• Who was doing the writing, a
spirit named Patience Worthor the living Mrs. Curran?
• This has been an ongoingargument since thebeginning.
• Stephen Braude, a Universityof Maryland philosophyprofessor spends 45 pagesin his “Immortal Remains”discussing the issue anddecides at the end it wasMrs. Curran but onlybecause that meant he hadonly to believe in one miracleinstead of two
OuijaA Word Of Warning
• All writers about Ouija include a awarning that board users should beaware that it could cause personalproblems.– Psychological problems of
dependence/obsession– Actual possession by evil spirits
• They provide many case histories ofboth of the above– “Psychic Summer” by A. Cooper & C.
Leon describes a summer of Ouijasessions that ended with an apparentlypossessed participant physicallyattacking other participants.
• Stoker Hunt’s final words– “If you choose to work with the Ouija
board after having read all this, I wishyou good luck”
Instrumental TranscommunicationElectronic Voice/Images
Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP are voices heardupon playback of a tape recorder that had beenrecording the white noise of a radio tuned betweenstations. Voices sometimes provide their namesand respond to questions asked by theexperimenter
First heard accidentally by Friedrich Jurgenson in the1960s and developed extensively in the ‘70s byDr.. Konstantin Raudive after reading Jurgenson’saccounts.
There is now an American Association ElectronicVoice Phenomena AA-EVP of 500 or so membersWeb -Site www.aaevp.com

“Induced After Death Communication(IADC)
• Procedure developed by Dr. Allen Botkin fromEye Movement Desensitization andReprocessing (EMDR) used to cure PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
• Patient is asked to move eyes side to sidewhile thinking about their problems. Afterseveral sessions patients report psychologicalbreakthroughs that would have ordinarily takenmonths.
• The first ADC happened spontaneously in anEMDR session
• It was so helpful to the patient Botkin learnedto induce it in other patients
• The fact that occasionally the therapist wouldshare the images seen by the patient provesthat they are not self generated hallucinations
• IADCs have all been loving, often familyexperiences. There have been no bad ones
Psychomanteum• The psychomanteum was
invented by Dr. Moody toinduce spirit communication
• It is simply a full length mirrortilted backward so that theperson sitting in front of itcannot see himself
• The room is darkened andpeople have reported havingseen a deceased relative inthe mirror, and some felt thatthey came out of the mirror
