DiscoverBeautiful Mineral County
From downtown Mina, hundreds of miles of off-highway roads and trails can be reached. Ghost towns and old mining camps are waiting to be explored. Wild burros, wild horses, antelope and big horn sheep may be seen as you hit the trails. Petroglyphs, fossilized seashells and interesting mineral samples can be seen. These are day trips and due to the rugged nature of trails 4WD and high clearance vehicles are always recommended. Mina is ATV friendly, but since it is in a rural part of the County, approximately 33 miles from any fuel or groceries, make sure to bring plenty with you.

Mina offers full hookups and shaded RV spaces. Also, there are plenty of “dry camping” sites available.
The state of Nevada is rich with American Indian culture both past and present. Here in Mineral County the Paiute Tribe is the most predominant. Of special interest are the ancient artifacts from the “Agai Ducutta Numa” also known as “The Trout Eater People” of the Paiute Tribe that once lived along the shores of Walker Lake. Important artifacts can be seen at the Cultural Center in Schurz. Please call ahead for availability; 775-773-2306. On the third weekend of September the Paiute Tribe of Schurz welcomes tribes from all over the country and the general public to enjoy their most sacred Pine Nut Festival. Pine nuts were a staple of the Paiute diet. The festival pays homage to the Tribes people and heritage. It is a sacred celebration and blessing that honors their ancestors. It also preserves native traditions through the pow-wow, hand games and dances.
The Mineral County Ordnance Museum commemorates the military and civilian personnel that have made significant contributions and even the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. The museum documents the history of support created at the Hawthorne Ammunition Depot. With over 1000 military items on display, there is something of interest to museum goers of all ages. Climb on our Patton M47 Tank or take a selfie with a bazooka while sitting in a M151 MUTT Vietnam era Jeep. If you would like to schedule a special tour, please call 775-945-5400.

The history of Mineral County reach-es far back in time. Boom towns like Aurora first brought the county (then Esmeralda County) to the forefront and in 1860 its population topped 5,000 at the height of its boom. Nearby Bodie, Califor-nia boomed from 1878 to 1883, bringing new life back to Aurora. Hawthorne was established in 1881 by the Carson and Colorado narrow-gauge railroad and became the commerce center of the county. Its importance in world events was solidified with the establishment of the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot in 1930. Please come visit and enjoy our variety of displays that include early mining equipment, a pharmacy from the early 1900’s, horse drawn vehicles, railroad artifacts, a 1930’s fire engine and early hose carts, photographs of early mining camps, Nevada wildlife, samples of Victorian furniture and
clothing, early photo-graphic equipment, an extensive sampling of minerals and semi- precious stones.

Don’t miss our ghost towns and mining camps:

DiscoverBeautiful Mineral County
Mineral County is surrounded by spectacular mountains and stark desert. The area offers ghost towns, 4x4 & OHV roads/trails, golfing, a newly renovated airport, RV parks, casinos, camp-
grounds, motels and much more! In the heart of Mineral County is Walker Lake, with miles of sandy beaches provid-ing access to non-motorized boating, wind sailing, and camp-ing. In prehistoric times, it was part of Lake Lahontan that covered much of the state. Don’t miss the historic 1942 Hawthorne USO Building. One of over 400 USO Kit buildings from 1942, it remains as one of the last few left in the country. The Hawthorne Convention Center and Courage Theater serves locals and tourists alike for private and corpo-rate events. So if you are hosting a convention, wedding, reunion or need a place to meet, please consider the USO building. For more information please visit us at:
