Gosford Times 25
th April 1918
One of Our Hero Lads. Mr J. Schubert, of Gosford, has just received the following letter from France, dated 1
st February:- On be-
half of the officers, N.C.O.’s, and men of the Battalion, I would like to express our sincere sympathy in the loss of your very gallant son, Sergeant Phillip Schubert, who made the supreme sacrifice in the third battle of Ypes for the Heights of Passchendaele on October 13, 1917. The attack was made under the very worst climatic conditions, and it was entirely due to superb determination and bravery of men like your son that the operation was a success. Sympathy is difficult to express on paper, but we would like you to feel how greatly we appreciated your son as a comrade and a soldier. Such men the Regiment and nation as a whole can ill afford to lose. – Yours sincerely, W. LERVY FRY, MAJOR, 34
TH Battalion.
