June 2017

2017
PPE Curve: Summer 2016
What is PIXL’s PPE Curve?
Partnership wide Pre Public Exam (PPE) for the
reformed GCSEs in Maths and English Language
Taken by Year 10 last summer term (now present
Year 11!)
PPE Curve: Summer 2016
Aptly named the PPE Curve because…
PiXL wanted to help students and teachers “get
ahead” no surprises summer 2017
PiXl wanted to “avoid any curve balls” - no
surprises in how students approach these papers
PiXl wanted it’s members to be involved so they
could have a data set of results to create a
“distribution curve”
PPE Curve: Summer 2016
How big was “The Curve”?
1122 PIXL schools signed up for “The Curve”
87,000 students sat both papers for English
116,000 students sat all three papers for Maths
PPE Curve: Summer 2016
Grade Boundaries
• Grades boundaries were created analytically
using the agreed Ofqual awarding methodology
• The grade boundaries show how well students
have done within the cohort who have taken the
exam
• They are NOT, therefore, boundaries that we
would expect to see next summer
Grade Boundaries
Grades boundaries will be lower than we would
expect for summer 2017 because…
• Students took the exam in Year 10
• Some students struggled with longer and more
demanding papers
• Some of the schools involved stated their teachers were
less adept at preparing students for the new papers
• Some schools said they struggled with the timing of the
Curve
Therefore: SCHS students achieved BETTER than
predicted
….…results will be subject to comparable outcomes, this means:
Results statistically protected to take into account the
“bedding down” of the reformed GCSE
The implementation of the basic principle that if a group
of students (the cohort) taking a qualification is of
similar ability to the cohort in the previous year then the
overall results should be comparable:
Health Warning!!!!
HOWEVER, we know students are 1 year older, schools across the country will
be offering additional support, Y11 key year group in every school
Next summer we know that…
So the PPE Curve grade give us…
an estimation of how well they have done compared to this
specific cohort, in summer 2016
we KNOW that if the whole cohort improves then the grade
boundaries will go up
our HOPE, of course, is that SCHS students will make
more rapid progress because of the knowledge from, and
resources based on, the Curve PPEs

Fine Predictions
Current Grade Current Grade + Fine
Grading: e.g. 8a or 8b
or 8c etc…
Definition
9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 Current grade + a Secure at that grade but with intervention could BOOST
to the next grade
9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 Current grade + b NOT secure at that grade, intervention maybe necessary
to secure that grade
9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 Current grade + c Very insecure at that grade, intervention essential to
secure the grade
Fine Grading: for intervention – to ensure we identify the right
support for students we have introduced the use of fine grading
by staff when predicting a current grade for all students
