REDUCE REUSE RECYCLERecycling in your School

East Lothian Waste

In East Lothian last year we created 58 000 tonnes of household waste

We currently recycle and compost 38% of this but that still means 62% is going to landfill

Which is almost a tonne of rubbish per household every year (the weight of a large bull or a car)!

Page 3: Schools Recycling

Every time we put something in our green wheeled bin it will end up at a landfill site

Rubbish dumped in a landfill site produces harmful greenhouse gases

All our rubbish is sent to Viridor’s landfill site situated by the cement works off the A1 near Dunbar

Why Should We Recycle?

What Happens to the things we Recycle?

•The cans, plastic bottles and glass are sent to a MRF in Darwen, Lancashire to be sorted before being recycled.

•The paper and cardboard goes to a paper mill in Newport, Wales where it is recycled into various paper products.

The energy saved from recycling one aluminium can is enough to run a TV for 3 hours.

Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W light bulb for up to 6 hours.

Recycling one tonne of paper saves 32,000 litres of water.

It can take just 7 days for old magazines and newspapers to be recycled into new ones.

And Finally….Some Recycling Facts!
