School uniform: pros & cons

Purpose: to clear up if the students need a school uniform.

Tasks: 1. To analyze the situation. 2. To trace back the development of school

uniform. 3. To compare the school’s uniform in different

countries. 4. To find out the pros and cons of school

uniform.

Hypothesis

If students don’t like wearing a school uniform it’s necessary to annul it.

Object of research: school uniform. Subject of research: attitude to a school uniform in different countries. Methods: work with documents, survey, statistics, analysis.

State of the problem

It is not a secret, that the problem of a school uniform is discussed in every school. The majority of schoolchildren have negative attitude to wearing a uniform. But the adults have a different opinion.

School uniform history

For decades, school uniforms differentiated between schools. Less formal schools were viewed as lower quality and more suited to the masses. More formal schools were exclusive and usually required students to be in uniform. Dress codes in public schools commonly limited specific clothing items or styles, but did not dictate fabrics or fashions.

• Encourage discipline.

• Help students resist peer pressure to buy

trendy clothes. • Low cost: School uniforms are a bargain. • Diminish economic and social barriers

between students.

• Increase a sense of belonging and school

pride.

• Improve attendance.

The Pros of School uniform

The cons of school uniform • Restrict student freedom of expression.

• Cuts down on attention.

• Spend more on clothing.

• Fewer opportunities for students to

appreciate diversity.

• Fewer opportunities to make choices.

• Restricts expression of religious

beliefs.

School uniform in Australia

School uniforms in Australia have traditionally followed the model of their British counterparts. For boys, the uniforms generally include trousers, shorts, jumpers and a button-up shirt and/or polo shirt. Girls' uniforms generally include skirts, culottes, dresses, jumpers, blouses and/or polo shirts and sometimes also trousers and shorts.

School uniform in Canada

Most public schools in Canada do not require that students wear uniforms. In recent years, some schools have eliminated skirts and kilts, in favour of dress pants for girls, or replaced skirts with the culottes or a garment . Also, bike shorts are sometimes worn under skirts. The tops are either dress shirts or golf shirts, and either sweaters or sweatshirts are worn. Grey or khaki dress pants are worn by both boys and girls.

School uniform in New Zealand

A school uniform is common in state schools for the boy's uniform to have a jersey and shorts rather than a blazer with tie and pants (long trousers). At high school girls usually wear skirts or pants. Some Girls Schools also have navy blue skirts and open necked white blouses long in winter and short in summer as the skirts are not allowed higher than below the knee; the skirts also have splits up the center at the back.

School uniform in China

Almost all secondary schools as well as some elementary schools require students to wear uniforms. Uniforms in mainland China usually consist of two sets, one for summer and the other for winter. Uniforms for boys in the winter usually consist of a zip up sweater and pants, and a collared shirt (usually white) with shorts or pants in the summer. The uniforms for girls in the winter are basically the same as the boys' uniform. In the southern part of China, they wear blue and white sweat shirts and pants.

School uniform in the USA

Most schools in the United States do not have school uniforms. Dress codes usually include limits on skirt length and skin exposure. Some school dress codes specify the types of tops (e.g. collared) and bottoms (e.g. khaki) that are allowed, as well as specific colours (often the school colours). But every cheerleaders team has a special uniform.

School uniform in the UK

Most British schools require pupils to wear uniforms. Schools vary widely on how prescriptive uniform is, and how much the wearing of it is enforced. Typical British secondary school uniform sometimes consists of: School blazer with school crest or logo white or blue shirt School tie Black, navy, grey, or maroon trousers or skirt (sometimes shorts will be allowed in Primary Schools). Grey or black socks (boys) White socks or black or skin-coloured tights or hold-up stockings (girls) Plain black shoes (trainers may be allowed in the summer). Black, navy, grey or school colour v-neck pullover, or black pullover with the school crest or logo.

School uniform in Russia

In Russia, school uniforms were canceled after 1917 revolution, but were re-introduced in 1948. The style of Soviet school uniform was modernized in 1962, and since that time was modified each decade. Today, there is no unified standard uniform in Russia; however, certain schools may have their own uniform that students are required to wear. In our school there is a school uniform which includes a jacket, a blouse, a skirt or trousers for girls and a jacket, dark trousers and a shirt for boys.

I go to a school in Texas and we don't have school uniforms. I have to say that I enjoy

not having uniforms because people here like to express themselves, and dressing the

way that they do helps people to see the kind of person they might be. (Brian, 16)

I believe that school uniforms have advantages and disadvantages. I just do not see

how what you wear affects the grades you get in a class or on a test. (Brittany

Gauthier, Canada)

I live in Rethymno, Crete in Greece.

I am in the 1st class of lysium ( I think its the 10th grade) anyway I'm 15. In our school

and generally in Greece we don't wear school uniforms but we do wear in our parades

for any national holiday. (Konstantena, Crete)

I am 15. I live in Dublin, Ireland. I am in 3rd year. My school uniform is a green, yellow

and blue kilt, a cream blouse, a green jumper, green knee high socks and black shoes.

Conclusion

Research about the influence of school uniforms on students has been less

forthcoming than research regarding the influence of school uniforms on student

achievement. Some students favor the dress code, believing it relieves peer pressure

on fashion issues. Other students claim the school uniforms violate rights of

expression or prohibit individuality. Some schools have a very strict code, while

others offer options that allow students to make some wardrobe choices regarding

their uniform.

The majority of our teachers - 90 % consider that it is necessary to wear a special

form of clothes at schools. The opposite point of view is shared by only 34% of pupils.

More often women are for the introduction of a school uniform. Parents are for school

uniform – 88 %.

I consider that in schools there should be not a uniform but a dress-code.
