ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Grades K-2)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
Guiding questions for learning at home:
● What do you know about sounds, letters, and words? How do we use sounds, letters, words at home?● What types of books do you like to read? What topics do you enjoy reading about?● What do you like to write about? Are there stories you haven’t finished telling yet?
Take advantage of the following learning opportunities daily:● Practice sight words until your child knows them in a “snap” along with vocabulary and spelling words.● Spend time each day reading together.● Parents/Guardians, spark conversation with questions like these:
○ Who is the main character? Would you be friends with him or her? Why? ○ What is the major problem in the story? ○ Does the story remind you of anything you’ve experienced or read about before? Explain.
● Draw and write about books you have read, experiences you have had, and topics your child knows about or would like to learn more about.

The materials included provide options for practicing important skills and strategies in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Refreshing your memory of the concepts learned and keeping your mind engaged will help you hit the ground running upon returning to the classroom. We look forward to seeing you back in class!

Reading Activities:Reading Tic Tac Toe Board Directions: Read 20-30 minutes each day. Choose one activity from the board to complete each day. Some activities could be completed by yourself, with a family member, or others.
Reading Tic Tac Toe!
Read the title and look at the cover
of your book.
Predict what will happen in the story.
Find:5 nouns, 5 verbs, and 5 adjectives
in your story.
Write them down.
Who is/are the main character(s)
in your story?
Draw & label or
Write the beginning, the middle,
and the end of the story.
Read the story to 3 different people.
Is this story fiction or nonfiction?
How do you know?
Why did you choose this book to read?
Would you recommend this story to a friend?
Why or why not?

Other Reading Activity Suggestions:
❏ Read the sight word list. Cross out the words you can read without pausing. Practice reading the other words each day until you can read them without pausing. (Good idea for the Alphabet too!)
❏ Create and play the Alphabet or Sight Word Concentration – If you have two sets of cards you can play concentration. Choose several pairs of matching letters or sight words and spread them out face down on the floor/table. As the child turns over each letter or sight word, they must tell you what it is. If they match, he/she wins them. If they don’t, you must turn them back over.
❏ Sight Word Treasure Hunt! Choose 5-10 sight words each day from your list. Look for those words throughout your home and in your books. See if you can find all the words on your list!
❏ Hide and Go Seek – Hide the letters around the room when your child is busy elsewhere. When the child returns have them find the letters one at a time and tell you what the letter is.
❏ Practice handwriting by using words from your list to make silly sentences.
❏ Rainbow Letters – Have you child draw their letters then trace over the letters with all the colors of the rainbow using crayons, colored pencils, or markers.

Writing Activities:Directions: Choose a writing prompt. Use the writing process outlined below as you write your story.
Suggested Writing Process Schedule:Day One: Choose a writing prompt. Tell your story to one or two people. Day Two: Write your story using your best spelling. Day Three: Reread your story and add details-think about clear words and more description in your details.Check for capitals and punctuation.
Day Four: Use your best handwriting to create your final draft. For fun, you can type your story! Day Five: Add illustrations and captions to your pictures.
Kindergarten through Second Grade Writing Prompt Suggestions
Think about your five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. Explain how you use these senses every day.
Think about a time when you had fun with a friend. Who were you with, and what did you do? Write a story about that time. Give enough details so that your readers can picture this fun experience.
There are four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Which season do you like best? Draw and write which season is your favorite and why. Give examples to support your reasons.
We all have things that we like to do: games we like to play, things we like to do at school, and things we like to do with our family. What do you like to do? Draw a picture of something you like to do. Then write a story and tell what you like to do and why you like it.
There are different jobs in your neighborhood, including police officers, store clerks, bankers, and restaurant workers. Think about all of the different jobs people have in your neighborhood. Write an explanation of what job you would like to have and why.
Most people have a favorite book. It is a book that they know well and have probably read more than once. What is your favorite book? Why do you like the book as much as you do? Write about your favorite book, and tell why you like it so much. Give examples to support your opinion and to try to convince other kids to read it.
Each of us is a special and unique person. We have features and talents that make us different from each other. These are the things that make us special. Draw a picture of yourself. Think about yourself, including how you look, how you act, and what you do that makes you special. Write about yourself using words that best tell about you.

Focus: Addition and Subtraction (Concepts skills and problem solving); Place Value
Fluency: Students can use efficient, accurate and generalizable methods to compute.
Kindergarten Know the numbers and count through 100; Work with numbers through 19
Add/Subtract within 5
First Grade Develop understanding about addition and subtraction within 100; Develop understanding about place value including grouping in tens and ones.
Add/Subtract within 10
Second Grade Extend understanding about the base-ten system working with numbers up to 1000
Add/Subtract within 100Single digit sums and differences from memory.
Here are some math activities to do at home. Try one or two a day to get a bingo or blackout. Some are to be completed by yourself, others with a family member.
Play How Many. “I see one dog,” then “I see two trees”. See how high you
can count looking for groups of objects.
Use a ruler or tape measure to
measure the length of objects.
Choose an object in the home (ie Pictures).
Count how many are in each room and create a
table to keep track
