Our Thanks You to….

The motto of WCPS is “The Trek to Excel-

lence Takes Everyone”. In their ongoing efforts to

ensure these words match reality for WCPS, Mrs.

McInnis and WCPS school Board provide WCPS

programs at every level designed to meet the

needs of all students.

Their desire to serve all students prompted

Mrs. McInnis and the WCPS School Board to

“think outside the box” of traditional schooling

and establish the Diversified Minds Non-

traditional High School Program. Their continued

farsightedness allows this unique WCPS program

(one of many) to re-invent itself each year in an

effort to continue “The Excellence Trek”.

Thank you, Mrs. McInnis and the WCPS

School Board, for your courage to take a chance

and sanction our existence. ~

Faculty, Staff and Students of Diversi-

fied Minds

A Challenge…

WCPS has 2 Core Values that we at Diversified

Minds try to fulfill. Core Value 1—We want our

students and staff to feel safe and secure. Core

Value 2—We want our students to be ready to

work and learn at the next level as they leave each

grade. Preparing WCPS students for the global

economy in which they must live and compete is a

moving target that truly requires the efforts of all.

D iversified Minds (DVM)

is a program based on the needs of a varie-

ty of students. Class sizes are extremely

small with an average student to teacher

ratio of 1:10. Our approach to learning is significantly

different - - but it is not easier or watered down. This

difference makes school success more attainable for stu-

dents who struggle with traditional teaching approaches

Virginia required curriculum and testing are the corner-

stone of all DVM classes. Planning begins with the end

in mind; and together, faculty and student, map out a

workable plan to reach the student’s chosen goal. The

program also requires various research, labs and work-

shop and technology projects that presents learning expe-

riences across modalities. Field trips and service learning

are an integral part of Diversified Minds curriculum. The

unique DVM course design also enables WCPS high

school students the opportunity to explore career options,

work-study, apprenticeships, and community service

opportunities as they earn credit toward completing a

Virginia High School Diploma or, in special allowable

circumstances, fulfill state requirements toward an Indi-

vidual Student Alternative Educational Plan (ISAEP), a

Virginia High School GED certificate offering..

All DVM students are Warren County Public

High School students and if in good standing with their

home campus can participate in all activities (as a specta-

tor or participant) sponsored by their home school, be

it Skyline or Warren County. Those activities include

but are not limited to:

Instruction in allowable subjects @ home high school campus by special arrangements;

Instructional classes @ Blue Ridge Technical Center;

After school team sports, clubs, dances, concerts, plays, etc.;

High school commencement activities.

Diversified Minds—where students can reach new heights!

Entry into Diversified Minds or any WCPS Non-

traditional Program MUST BEGIN at the Child

Study Process within the student’s home high

school. The home school makes the referral. The

Non-Traditional Programs Admissions Commit-

tee determines referral acceptance and program

placement.

In an effort to ensure that DVM students are

prepared for life beyond the DVM program, all

students regardless of individual program, are

expected to:

Arrive promptly at the time specified for

their program;

Participate in Career Awareness, Financial

Literacy, Social Responsibility, and other

workshops as assigned;

Complete a Technology Portfolio illustrat-

ing mastery of communication workplace

skills.
