Ceremony

University of California, Davis

For more than 100 years, the University of California, Davis, has engaged in teaching, research and public service that matter to California and transform the world. Located close to the state capital, UC Davis has over 39,000 students, an annual research budget that exceeds $847 million, a comprehensive health system and 13 specialized research centers. The university offers interdisciplinary graduate study and more than 104 undergraduate majors in four colleges – Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Letters and Science. It also houses six professional schools – Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

The School of Veterinary Medicine

The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine provides teaching, research and service programs to benefit animal health, public health and environmental health. As the only veterinary school in the University of California system, we serve the entire state.

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program is a four-year course of academic study and clinical training. Faculty research and the real-world cases of the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital are essential components of the program. Students enrich their learning through scientific projects, international exchange, volunteer activities and field experience.

Since 1948, the School of Veterinary Medicine has launched the careers of more than 6,300 veterinarians and 960 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine professionals. More than 1,050 residents and dozens of master’s and doctoral students have completed training here. All keep current in their fields through continuing education at the school. Our graduates are practitioners and leaders in private practice, public agencies, academia, industry and other settings.

Congratulations to our newest graduates and their families.

DR. MICHAEL D. LAIRMORE

Michael D. Lairmore, DVM is dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. Dean Lairmore is board certified in veterinary anatomic pathology as well as veterinary virology and immunology. He is one of the few veterinarians elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and has received numerous teaching and research awards throughout his career. Dean Lairmore is a scientist who bridges multiple disciplines to address basic questions related to viral causes of cancer. His research has provided significant breakthroughs in the biology of human retroviruses and the understanding of viral-associated carcinogenesis. He has authored or co-authored 190 scientific publications.

FRANCESCA SOLARI

Francesca Solari was born and raised in Marin County, California where she grew up with two sisters, a rambunctious Irish Setter, and a cat. Her love for animals and science became evident at a very early age, and by 14 years old she was already working in veterinary clinics, including an orthopedic surgery specialty practice. In 2016, she graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a BS in Animal Science. Upon graduation from UC Davis, she will be completing a rotating small animal internship at Iowa State University. She hopes to eventually pursue a surgical residency. She started singing and playing the piano at the age of 8 and was on stage performing at local venues by the time she was 11. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, playing the ukulele or piano, running, hiking, and spending time with her cat, Pickle.

DR. KIMBERLY DODD

Dr. Dodd is the Director of the Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (FADDL) on Plum Island. FADDL is an international reference laboratory for high-consequence animal diseases, including foot and mouth disease and African swine fever. The Plum Island facility will soon be replaced by the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility, at which time FADDL’s mission will expand to include emerging and zoonotic diseases.

Dodd is a veterinarian and virologist; she received her DVM and PhD from the University of California Davis and her MS and BA from the University of Virginia. Prior to her current position with the USDA, she served as the Senior Scientist at Metabiota, where she worked across Africa to enhance laboratory capacity.

5

Previously, as a scientist at CDC’s Viral Special Pathogens Branch, she developed a novel vaccine for Rift Valley fever virus. During and after her time at CDC, Dodd supported CDC outbreak response, most recently for the West Africa Ebola outbreak.

DR. LANE JOHNSON

Dr. Lane Johnson received his DVM degree from UC Davis in 1980. He has been the staff veterinarian at the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center since 2015. His duties there include overseeing the well-being of all live animals used for teaching laboratories in the School of Veterinary Medicine, particularly the third year surgery course. He teaches across all three years of didactic instruction and directs the Clinical Skills Laboratory. Prior to his position at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Johnson spent many years in private practice as an associate and practice owner, engaging in general small animal, high volume spay/neuter, livestock and equine practice. In addition to his position at the university he acts as a consultant to the California Veterinary Medical Board.

ASHLEY KEFFLER-ROA

Ashley Keffler-Roa was born in Texas where she received her BS in Animal Science with a minor in dance from Texas Tech University. Her interest in veterinary medicine was seeded when she participated in a bovine necropsy during a Girl Scout field trip to a veterinary pathology lab. After moving to California in 2009, she worked in general practice, wildlife rehabilitation and shelter medicine where her desire to pursue a doctorate in veterinary medicine solidified. During her time here at UC Davis, she was an event coordinator for Pride VMC and rounds coordinator for the Knight’s Landing One Health Clinic, though the majority of her “free time” was spent with her wife, daughter and their menagerie of dogs. After graduation, she plans on staying in the Davis-Sacramento area at a small animal practice and will be experiencing the bittersweet feelings of an empty nest after moving her daughter to college this summer.
