For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved riding roller coasters. Euclid Beach Park, a major amusement venue was within walking distance of our home and a familiar teen destination. I enjoyed all the rides (and the pop corn balls), but especially “The Thriller”, the largest of the coasters. There was a moment at the end when the train rolled to a stop and it was time to get off. I was glad the breath-taking adventure was over, but I knew I’d miss the excitement. That comes close to describing how I feel about the end of my tenure as Osher President. It’s been quite a ride. The people I’ve met and worked with have enriched my life. I’ve en-joyed the challenges of dealing with a different name and structure for the group. There’ve been many small bumps and sharp curves along the way, from the early questions about what and how we were going to op-erate, to the steep climb and dizzying height of reaching our membership goals. All of it has progressed with tremendous speed. I can’t believe it’s been almost four years. I think that we’ve matured as an organization and are poised to take the next step of development and expansion. I know I’m proud of the changes we’ve made and of the accomplishments we’ve achieved. The next ride might be more like a merry-go-round than a roller coaster. We’re all riding it together, and it’s a steady pace, on an even keel, all set to music.

If you haven’t yet, it’s time to get on, and enjoy the ride. The particular

style of Osher organizations is that they’re run by and for the members. What talents, skills, time do you have that could help us to operate and grow? We’re establishing new committees for programming, for market-ing, and for development (fund-raising). If you have experience in any of these areas, we need you. Even if you don’t have experience, but have interest, we can help you to learn. All you English majors, we need writ-ers for the newsletter. You don’t need to have professional experience, or to commit to a rigid schedule. The ability to comment on events, or share an experience is all it takes. If you can volunteer two or forty hours a month (or anything in between), we can use you. If nothing else, talk us up. Let your friends and neighbors know about our programs and oppor-tunities. If each member brought in one additional person, we’d be eligi-ble for a second Osher grant. Now, that’s a doable fund-raising goal.

Let’s hope that the future is like a ride on the bumper cars, with so many

of us trying to maneuver around and get jobs done that we can’t help but bump into each other. Let’s take turns. If you haven’t done anything this year, maybe next year will be your year for a more exciting ride.

An Opportunity to Travel to South America The Learning in Retirement Organization at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse is extending an in-vitation to other Wisconsin Learning in Retirement members to join them on a trip to South America. The once in a lifetime trip to South America with an educational focus on Brazil and Argentina is scheduled for October 13-28, 2010. Join us on an extraordinary sixteen-day journey to Brazil and Ar-gentina to experience Learning in Retirement’s tradition of unique learning experiences and foreign travel. A special highlight of this trip is a three-day cruise on the Amazon River which includes land excursions as well as lectures by local experts on the flora and fauna and mystique of the rain forest.

This tour also includes a visit to Manaus the capital and heart of the Amazon region before flying to Rio de Janiero. In Rio the group will explore the city’s past as well as participate in its future while staying at the iconic Copacabana Palace Hotel. Enjoy a walking tour of Old Rio, meet with faculty and students at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janiero, a special tour of Rio’s favelas or shanty towns and a visit to Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue which stands guard towering over the city.

From Rio fly to Iguazu Falls to experience the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage area by foot, train and boat! The trip has been scheduled to coincide with the full moon when the falls are their most spectacular.

Continue on, by air, to Buenos Aires where the essence of the city lies in the sum of its forty-eight bar-rios or neighborhoods. Visit the San Telmo neighborhood with its 19th century architecture which is the cradle of the city’s historic and cultural traditions; Recoleta Cemetery host of many former Presi-dents as well as Eva Perón; one of the world’s finest opera houses, Teatro Colon and take part in a tango lesson!

Day trips from Buenos Aires include a visit to “gaucho” country and a traditional estancia set in the middle of the Pampas plains; a hydrofoil trip to Uruguay to visit a 17th century city, Colonia del Sacra-mento, a UNESCO World Heritage City which appears to be untouched by time; and an excursion by train and boat to the Tigre Delta a 14,000 square kilometer area where thousands of islands and inlets, water channels, rivers and backwaters form a sub-tropical wonderland.

This trip has been designed to combine ultimate comfort for you with unmatched elegance. With stays in 4- and 5-star hotels, wonderful cuisine and special visits this trip is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Group size is limited to 20 travelers and the trip price is $7,495 per person for Learning in Retirement members and $7,530 for non-members based on double occupancy, which includes all accommoda-tions, all internal land and air travel, daily breakfast, 13 lunches and 12 dinners and a full sightseeing program.
