The mace is part of the medievaltraditions of the university. It wasoriginally a weapon used to protectkings, and then by 1200 becamemore and more a symbol ofauthority.

The UB mace is designed to tell thestory of UB and the NiagaraFrontier. Fashioned by silversmithHudson Roysher of Arcadia, Calif.,it was used for the first time in1962. Engraved atop a miniaturewalled structure representing theCity of Buffalo are three arrowsbound together, symbolizing theunity of UB and the city.

Other details include symbolicrepresentations of the discovery ofLake Erie in 1669 by Joliet andearly explorations by LaSalle. Acrest symbolizes UB’s role as adynamic center of human growthand welfare. The motto “Universityand City Community” is lettered inLatin around the knob of the shaft.

COMMENCEMENT 20166

Dean’s Award for Achievement

Each year, the School of Engineering andApplied Sciences (SEAS) gives its highest honor, the Dean’s Award for Achievement, to someonewho has made a substantial contribution to thepractice of engineering or the applied sciencesand/or has had an exceptional professionalcareer. This year, it is with great pleasure that theschool honors Norman Hayes (BS EE ‘80, BA CS‘80). Hayes is a Director of Engineering inAISCs, and a Computer Architect.

As a Buffalo area native, Hayes was co-valedictorian at Sweet Home Senior High School(Amherst NY) in 1977. Just three years later, he

received a double degree from UB with a Bachelor of Science in ElectricalEngineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science. Hayes continued hiseducation at Cornell University, earning his master’s in Electrical Engineering in1981, on a Bell Laboratories scholarship.

After completing his formal education, Hayes has made substantial technicaland leadership contributions to three pioneering companies. The first wasAT&T Bell Laboratories, a leader in world class R&D that invented the transistor, laser, and Unix. There he developed designs and technologies for some of theworld’s earliest 32-bit microprocessors. He joined his first startup, SunMicrosystems, in 1988. At Sun, Hayes developed ground-breakingmicroprocessor memory management and cache architectures which scaled

from desktop workstations to Sun’s largest packet-switched MP servers. Thesearchitectures continued through many generations, which eventually made miniand mainframe computers obsolete. He joined Juniper Networks as a startup in2000, where he served as a Director of ASIC Engineering on several generationsof networking chipsets, whose top interface speeds advanced from 2.5 Gbps to400 Gbps during his tenure.

Hayes recognizes the role his UB education and experience had in preparing himfor a rewarding and successful career. “UB gave me a solid, broad foundation ofhow to solve real world problems. UB’s faculty and leaders provided greatpersonal examples of teamwork, creativity, and loving what you do.”

Since his graduation from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences,Hayes has always been an enthusiastic alumnus. In 1995, he was delighted tobecome a charter member of the Delta Society, the school's leadership annualgiving society, and attended UB’s inaugural homecoming football game (a 14-7win over Cornell) in President Greiner’s box. More recently, an engineeringlaboratory was named after Hayes in Davis Hall. In 2012, he was namedChairman of the Delta Society.

Outside of his professional career, Hayes plays ice hockey and tennis, and enjoysphotography and the arts. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wifeJacqueline; their daughter Elena is a junior at UC Davis studying ManagementEconomics.

The University at Buffalo is honored to name Mr. Norman Hayes an alumnus ofgreat distinction, whose career achievements merit our highest regard.

The Founding of the School of Engineering and Applied SciencesEngineering courses were initially offered by the College of Arts and Sciences, which began granting a Certificate in Engineering in 1929. Early programs wereestablished in engineering science, mechanical engineering, industrialengineering and electrical engineering. Then in 1946, one hundred years afterthe University at Buffalo was founded, the School of Engineering wasestablished. The school was authorized to offer both bachelors and mastersdegrees. Departments of civil engineering and chemical engineering were addedin 1958 and 1961, respectively. In 1962, the university joined the StateUniversity of New York (SUNY) higher education system and by 1967, thename had been changed to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences. One year later, aerospace engineering was added, and a comprehensiveengineering school was achieved. An undergraduate program in engineeringphysics was added in 1985. The unit changed its name to the School ofEngineering and Applied Sciences in 1989.

In 1998, a new department of computer science and engineering was formed bymerging the computer science program from the College of Arts and Scienceswith the computer engineering component of the department of electrical andcomputer engineering in SEAS. The environmental engineering program wasestablished in 2000. In 2010, a new department of biomedical engineering wasformed in collaboration with the UB Jacobs School of Medicine and BiomedicalSciences. In 2014, a new department of materials design and innovation wasestablished, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences.

SEAS has come far since 1946, when it first held courses in the newly dedicatedKarr Parker Engineering Building. Parker Hall was immediately enlarged toaccommodate traditional students and returning GIs intent on pursuingengineering careers after WWII. In the mid-70s to mid-80s, the school movedto five new buildings on the north campus: Bell, Bonner, Furnas, Jarvis, andKetter Halls. Our newest building, Davis Hall, opened in 2011 and features anenvironmentally friendly design and construction. Together these buildingsform an outstanding educational and research facility, comprising 275,000square feet of laboratory and office space.

Faculty and Leadership: A Heritage of Vision and TalentSEAS has enjoyed consistent success in large part because of its leadership. Overthe course of its sixty-plus years, twelve distinguished educators have served asleaders of the school. In 1946, Paul E. Mohn became the first dean. His thirteen-year tenure as dean lent stability to the young school. Frederick H. Thomasserved as acting dean from 1959–60. E. Arthur Trabant was dean from1960–1966; Howard E. Strauss was acting dean from 1966–67. When theFaculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences became the administrative body ofengineering at SUNY Buffalo, the head of the faculty was often referred to as theprovost. F. Karl Willenbrock was provost from 1967–70; Joseph Bergantz wasacting provost from 1970–71; and William Gill served as provost/dean from1971–1977. George C. Lee took office as dean in 1978, and served in that postuntil 1995. In 1996, Mark H. Karwan became the school's sixth dean, followedby Harvey G. Stenger Jr. in 2006. Rajan Batta was the school’s acting and interimdean in 2011–12, and in 2013, Liesl Folks joined SEAS as the school’s eighthdean.

Our leadership and faculty realize the school's direction with the invaluablesupport of our dedicated staff, students, alumni, friends, industry and corporatepartners. In addition to their dedicated teaching, research, and service, thefaculty, which now numbers 165, have won prestigious awards, authoredcountless books and articles, and produced many patents for materials andtechniques, all aiming to benefit humankind. More than 50 of our faculty havebeen elected as Fellows of engineering professional societies and 33 are NationalScience Foundation early career award winners. In the past year, three of ourcurrent faculty members were recognized with SUNY Chancellor’s Awards forExcellence in Scholarship and Creative Activity. Many others hold SUNYdistinguished professor titles.

In celebrating this commencement, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) marks over a half-century of educational

and research excellence and service to the technical community, to New York State, and to society at large.

Programs and PartnershipsThe School of Engineering and Applied Sciences was an early innovator inreforming the traditional preparation of beginning engineers. The school hasalways valued interdisciplinary research and has structured itself to promoteconnections across disciplines that benefit undergraduate and graduate study,as well as to address important social needs like health care, personal securityand recovery from natural disasters. SEAS is the home of such prominentinterdisciplinary research and educational programs as Center for Multi-sourceInformation Fusion (CMIF), Center for Unified Biometrics (CUBS), Center forExcellence in Information Systems Assurance Research and Education(CEISARE), and The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE), as well as amembership in the National Science Foundation Center for e-Design. UnderUB’s “E Fund” initiative, we engaged with our campus colleagues to developresearch and educational programs that will have a high impact both inside andoutside the university. These include Computational Data Science andEngineering (CSDE), Home Health and Well-Being through Adaptive SmartEnvironments (Home-BASE), Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE), andInstitute of Sustainable Transportation and Logistics (ISTL).

More recently, the campus was challenged to address the difficult problems andquestions of our time through impactful, interdisciplinary research, education, and engagement. SEAS faculty have assumed leadership roles in these“Communities of Excellence,” in particular, Global Health Equity andSustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART), aswell as the newly established Research and Education in eNergy, Environmentand Water (RENEW) institute. Our total research expenditures for theacademic year 2014–2015 were $58.5 million.

Historically, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences' partnership withindustry has been valuable and mutually rewarding. Students benefit from theprofessional interactions that our experiential learning programs provide, andfaculty contribute to and gain valuable perspective from industry-sponsoredresearch. Industry partners, meanwhile, benefit from access to a talentedworkforce and a well-trained knowledge base that provides them with acompetitive edge in research and development.

A Proud Past, A Challenging FutureThe School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is a world-class institution.Today's graduates join the ranks of over 30,000 alumni who have made theirmark on the discipline, both in the academic world and in industry. Graduateslive in 50 states and 65 countries around the world.

Like any great organization, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences iscontinually evolving and stretching to meet new challenges. The more weachieve, the more we see there is still more to be done to rise to the challenge oftraining the next generation of great engineers while delivering world-changingadvances in science and technology.

Academic Costume

The traditional costume worn at commencement exercise is a record of academicachievement of the individuals taking part. Its use, which originated at Englishand European universities during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, came tothe United States in 1754 with the founding of what is now Columbia University.

In 1895 the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, met at Columbia to draft a code which would serve to regulate the design ofgowns and hoods for various degrees as well as to fix the colors that indicate thevarious faculties. This code has been adopted by most of the colleges anduniversities in America. It was revised in 1932 and again in 1959.

The level of degree held is indicated by the gown’s cut. Doctoral gowns have fullsleeves which are round and open. Gowns worn by bachelors have long pointedsleeves, and those worn by masters have long, closed, somewhat fuller sleeveswhich reach nearly to the wearer’s knees. The arm goes through a slit, giving theappearance of short sleeves.

The color as well as cut of the gown varies. Although most doctoral gowns areblack, in some cases their color is that of the university conferring the degree. Thedoctoral gown is trimmed in velvet; it has three two-inch bars on the sleeves anda five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides infront. Although usually black, the velvet may be of a color that indicates the

nature of the degree. For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the color is darkblue, engineers may also wear orange; for Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctorof Dentistry, lilac; for Doctor of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow; for Doctor of Law, purple; for Doctor of Social Work, citron, etc.Master’s and bachelor’s gowns have no facing.

The hood seems to have had a more practical origin. During the Middle Agesmonks wore them to protect their shaved heads in the winter and as a containerin which to collect alms. It is the most significant part of the academic dress. Itsshape and size indicates the degree of the wearer, the color of the velvet borderindicates the academic field, and the color of the lining indicates the institutiongranting the degree. The bachelor’s hood is three feet long and has a two-inchvelvet border, the master’s is three and one-half feet long and has a three-inchborder, and the doctor’s is four feet with a five-inch border. The State Universityof New York at Buffalo hood is lined with blue and gold stripes; orange signifiesengineering.

The mortarboard cap has been conventionalized from the skull cap which wasworn by monks of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The mortarboard isusually black. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders;candidates wear the tassel over the right front quarter until the degree isconferred.

The first commencement of The University of Buffalo was held at the FirstPresbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 16, 1847, when medical degrees wereconferred on seventeen “young gentlemen.” The event was witnessed by “quite alarge concourse of our citizens, as the occasion was a novelty here,” according tothe newspaper report.

After an impressive and appropriate prayer, the Honorable Millard Fillmore,Chancellor, delivered an address dealing principally with a historical sketch of therise and progress of education in Buffalo. Following music by the choir andconferring of degrees, Professor Hamilton spoke to the graduates. His addresswas described in a local newspaper the following day as a “feeling and beautifuleffort complete with high sentiments, of sound morality and enlarged and purephilanthropy, which, if made the rule and guide of the young gentlemen to

whom it was more immediately directed, cannot fail of making them ornamentsto their profession and to society . . . in thought, word and deed.”

After 16 weeks of study, which in those days was the entire medical preparation, each graduate was cited for having “specialized” in one of the following: Hernia,Empiricism, Remittant Fever, Pneumonities, Mania Potu, Puerperal Fever,Erythema, Anatomical Fractures, Typhoid Fever, Pneumonia, Acute Laryngitis,History of Physiology, Dyspepsia, Haemorrhagi, Inflammatory Croup,Pregnancy, Scarlatina.

The students had paid $62.00 for all the lectures in the entire course, plus a $3.00matriculation fee, $5.00 for a “demonstrator’s ticket,” and $20.00 for a graduationfee. Board, including fuel and light, cost from $2.00 to $3.00 per week.

COMMENCEMENT 201628

UB Engineering and Applied SciencesAlumni Association Letter

Engineers of 2016,

Welcome to the club! Today, you join our 30,000-strong worldwide membership of the University at Buffalo Engineering AlumniAssociation. In the days surrounding commencement, you will rightfully hear many voices telling you about how your class is different, and your challenges unique. It’s true. The world is a dynamic place and the solutions the world will beg of you will be unlike any previouslyposed. After all, that is our job. We engineers find solutions to unsolved problems and our role is nothing less than essential to thecontinued progress of humanity. If that sounds like a big deal, it’s because it is. However as you know, your solutions to your uniqueproblems will be based on the works of engineers and scientists who have preceded you and your own work will become the foundationfor your successors’. The story of societal progress is the story of youth and experience working together.

Expectations can be daunting. Human instinct can be discouraging and others burdened by the baggage of “the way it’s always been done”may say it’s impossible, but your greatest success will be determined by your ability to blend the experiences of your predecessors with thewide eyed ambition of a young grad. Certainly your student experience came with its own challenges, and professional life will too.Professionally, the balance between humility and ambition is absolutely essential to ultimate success.

In addition to the world class technical education we received here at UB, I hope that you’ll take appreciation for the faculty and staff withyou on your next step. It’s impossible for them to have taught you everything they’ve learned in their careers, so do not lose touch. Asteachers, they take pride in seeing the growth of the careers they’ve fostered for a few years here at Buffalo. You are the youth, they are theexperience. The benefits go both ways; our successes fuel their ambition as well.

If like us, you feel that the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences has had a significant positive impact on yourlife and future, please keep in touch with the Engineering Alumni Association. At the UBEAA, we too thoroughly enjoy celebrating thesuccesses of our fellow alumni, just as we are with you today at commencement. If the next step in your life’s journey takes you someplaceunfamiliar, drop us a line. With 30,000 alumni worldwide, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone in your new home who can relate to yourstudent experiences, show you where the good wings are, and go catch a Buffalo game on TV? If you’re staying in Western New York, dropus a line. We are present and active on campus and always looking to do more to benefit the students. Whether near or far, great or small, your involvement with the UBEAA will help serve those who fill the lecture halls you vacate today. To that end, no perspective is morerelevant than that of the recent graduate. To learn more about the UBEAA, contact Bethany Mazur: [email protected], the UBEAA Boardof Directors: [email protected], or visit our website at: engineering.buffalo.edu/ubeaa.

With best wishes on behalf of the University at Buffalo Engineering Alumni Association,

Kurt W.R. Bessel (BS AE 2008, MS ME 2009)

President, University at Buffalo Engineering Alumni Association

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2016!
