16 The University of Sheffield

Welcome to this new newsletter which we hope will become a regular means of communication with our colleagues and alumni. The School of Clinical Dentistry in Sheffield enjoys a national and international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research and our graduates are highly regarded for the quality of the care they provide. Many have gone on to develop careers as leaders in the profession. It is our hope to maintain and encourage this rich heritage and provide more opportunities for our alumni to learn about the successes of the School and to receive regular news about colleagues old and new.

Today, many exciting, and some difficult, new challenges face the dental profession and the Dental School. In Sheffield we strive to help the whole dental team attain their full academic and clinical potential and at the same time develop a broad range skills to progress their careers and continue learning. To achieve this we provide up-to-date, research-led teaching delivered by modern methods and with the support of excellent facilities. In recent years, we have almost doubled our teaching and research staff and we have invested in new facilities including a new £5.5m wing with state-of-the-art research facilities and teaching rooms and a £9.5m refurbishment of the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. Since 2008 we have introduced an exciting new integrated curriculum that delivers clinical dental education in the context of the underpinning sciences. A core principle of our course is high quality clinical teaching and this is supported by an innovative outreach programme where senior students are taught in primary care setting across South Yorkshire.

In this newsletter, you can read of these developments and also learn about other initiatives and news about staff and students. The wide range of activities are too numerous to include in one newsletter, but I hope this will give you a flavour of the activities and successes of the School. It is hoped that over the next few years we will develop a strong alumnus association with regular social and educational events. I hope that you will join us and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

Welcome to the School of ClinicalDentistry Alumni Newsletter 2012Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the new newsletter for former students of the Sheffield Dental School. The school feels that there is considerable interest from former students in what has happened to their dental school and the staff who taught them since they graduated in what may be many years ago but can seem like only yesterday as time passes so quickly. Experience of dental school of course happens at a young age generally and so has a big impact on our lives. So to reconnect with you we have established this newsletter as a means of keeping in contact and to keep you informed of what’s happening in the school and events which we will be organising for our Alumni in the future. Our first event is taking place in June 2012 and we would be delighted to see as many of you at that as possible and for you to be able renew old acquaintances from your student days. If you know of colleagues who may be interested in this reunion but have lost contact with the School and University please let them know and ask them to make contact with us.

Welcome from the Alumni Association

A look in the Dental School archive can show you how much the Dental School and Hospital have changed over the years, and in the mid-2000s it was time for more change in the CCDH as the hospital clinics and surgeries you remember were in need of an overhaul. Not only were the chairs and surgeries starting to look rather dated, but the recent increase in the student intake had led to an increased demand on chair space, and so more clinic space was urgently needed.

Following many hours of negotiations over tenders and contracts, the work finally got under way in September of 2007. As such a major overhaul was planned, the job had to be completed in stages in order for the hospital to remain as close to fully functional as possible. Work began on the Orthodontics and Periodontology departments first.

It can’t be said that the project went entirely smoothly, thanks in no small part to the discovery of asbestos in some of the hospital’s structure. However, despite the odd glitch and delay, the work eventually got up to pace and new departments began appearing out of the noise and dust. During the work, the patients, staff and students had to put up with the noise of building work on a daily basis. Nervous patients were commonly seen in the waiting room wondering if they were going to be the next victim of the drilling noise that was making the entire building shake!

After the Periodontology department had been revealed we eventually saw a fully refurbished RD3 appear. The new RD3 has a new, plush, fully enclosed waiting room with the main clinic divided into left and right halves with modern new chairs and a new dispensary. A digital radiography facility was also installed. Extra side surgeries were later completed after the extension to the Dental School allowed some of the previous office space to be converted into new surgeries. This has provided staff members with the space and facilities to undertake specialist treatment in state-of-the-art surgeries with integrated specialist equipment such as high powered operating microscopes.

It wouldn’t have been fair to update RD3 without paying attention to RD2, and so that also received a new, plush, fully enclosed waiting room. A new dispensary has been located on the left side of RD2, which will allow the current dispensary and decontamination area to be utilised for more clinical surgeries.

There have been significant developments on the first floor too, with new surgery space being located between the old Locals and A&C departments. This new space has now become the A&C facility, with the remainder of the previous A&C space now being used as a separate Oral Medicine suite. Part of the old out-patient theatre area was also developed into a dedicated sedation suite. Orthodontics also received new dental chairs and an additional room for cephalometrics.

During our Alumni events you are welcome to tour the Dental School and Hospital to see the improvements.

As anyone local to the the Dental School will have noticed, the Dental School and hospital were enveloped in building works for some considerable time. The works on the Dental School were to add a further wing to the building, closing the quadrangle and adding extra research and office space. Now completed, we can look back on the process with a mixture of satisfaction and relief.

Initial discussions back in December 2003 had identified a severe shortage of research laboratory space and office accommodation for our NHS and University staff. Our initial concept was to add the ‘fourth side’ to the existing school and hospital buildings, and to help identify potential solutions. In the summer of 2004 we asked a group of University architecture students to come up with a series of designs. Although some of their excellent proposals proved too grand for our budget, their efforts were instrumental in showing the University what could be achieved. As a result we were awarded £3.5m of SRIF3 (Science Research Infrastructure Funding) money towards the project. At the same time the Dental School and Hospital were developing proposals for teaching an increased number of undergraduate dental students, thereby requiring an increase in dental chairs. This could only be achieved by utilising staff office space in the hospital, and so it was agreed that our new building

would also provide new office accommodation. Fortunately the Hospital Trust was successful in its bid for Department of Health funds to support the infrastructure needed for the additional student numbers. £2m was allocated to the building project, making a total budget of £5.5m.

The Project Team for the new building met regularly from Spring 2005 onwards, and numerous meetings with the ‘end-users’ allowed detailed plans for the new laboratories and offices to be developed. Our architects ‘Jefferson Sheard’ obtained planning permission in April 2006, the project went out to tender, and ‘Bluestone’ (now Morgan Ashurst) was selected as the preferred contractor.

The BuildWork began on site in December 2006 and once underway, growth of the building was remarkably rapid. The steel superstructure appeared over the course of a couple of weeks, the roof started to go on in June 2007, external insulation and cladding in July, and ‘first fix’ in August. The design incorporates many features to reduce energy consumption, making it an environmentally friendly building that complies with the current stringent regulations. This means that air conditioning is restricted to laboratory areas, and the offices that face the outside of the building have solar shading to protect occupants from the hot Sheffield sun!

The ContentThe new building has provided 1,100m2 of extra space. Most importantly it incorporates over 370m2 of new research laboratory space, with different facilities on each floor. This includes central resources for cell culture and tissue engineering, cell and molecular biology, proteomics, neuroscience and advanced microscopy. In addition we have new office space for NHS and academic staff, research staff and postgraduate students. On the ground floor we have two new seminar rooms, each permitting small group teaching for up to 25, to allow us to cope with the increase in teaching commitments. The new building also incorporates a new common room used as a ‘quiet’ area and has both vending machines and an ‘internet cafe’.

The ResultThe building was handed over to us on February 29th 2008 (so it will have few birthdays!). Laboratories and offices were occupied and in use within days, and it rapidly developed a ‘lived in’ feel. One of the particular successes of the design has been the continuity with existing space, and the bright cheerful atmosphere. This has been enhanced by a series of pictures showing images of our research work, selected on the basis of their artistic merit.

We are delighted with the outcome and excited by the potential opportunities that it will give us in forthcoming years; we trust that our staff and research teams will add to their many past successes. A series of pictures of the finished product are shown below.

Official OpeningWorld leaders in dental education and research gathered at the University of Sheffield on Friday 25 April 2008 to mark the opening of the new £5.5 million extension. The extension was officially opened by Dr Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust.

As part of the official opening there was a guest lecture by Professor Deborah Greenspan who is a world leader in dental research and at the time was President of the International Association for Dental Research. She has a major leadership role in directing and setting policy and strategy for global dental research. Professor Greenspan was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University as part of the opening celebrations.

Mark Walport, said on the day: “The Wellcome Trust has strong links with the University of Sheffield and has invested around £25 million over the past five years in the University’s research programmes and infrastructure. I hope that this building will allow Sheffield to build on its excellent record in dental research. The close integration of the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and the University is particularly important and will allow a bench to clinic approach to the research programmes being undertaken here.”

Widening ParticipationOne of the defining factors for entering a medical profession is support. HEFCE report that if one parent is in the profession, you have a 1 in 80 chance of joining them. If you are from a family where neither parent has been to university, your chances of getting into medical or dental school drop to 1 in 800.

In response to this, in 2005 the School of Clinical Dentistry and the Outreach and Access Section at the University of Sheffield developed and implemented a Widening Participation (WP) scheme, ADOPT (Access to Dental Occupations: Practice and Tutoring), which is currently the only WP initiative of this scale for dentistry in the UK. The aim is to provide support for potential applicants who are first generation into Higher Education. Targeting Year 12 students, ADOPT currently recruits across the region for around 25 places per year, supporting these students through further education and their application to university.

Taking a hands-on approach, in keeping with the practical nature of dentistry, ADOPT is designed to offer unique opportunities to enrich students’ knowledge of the profession. The programme starts with a Taster Day run in collaboration with all Units in the Dental School. This is followed by a team-building event, AS and A2 revision classes and work experience, as well as personal statement writing and interview practice sessions, all supported by on-line mentoring. The two year programme then finishes with a celebration evening, giving the students a chance to relax and recognise their achievements whilst participating on ADOPT.

H&T student Rachel Buckley instructs an ADOPT student during ‘A Taste of Dentistry’.

Can you help? For students considering a dental profession, the most valuable experience for getting an insight into the jobs within the dental team is a work placement. Work experience is an essential part of the application to dentistry, and also provides the student with the context in which to place all the reading and studying they have been doing towards their

chosen profession. It is unfortunately increasingly difficult for students to get approval to observe at a local dental practice. If you are in the local region (Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire) and could offer a student a few days of observing in your practice, please get in touch via the Dental Alumni website (see back page).

Christopher Stokes, ADOPT Coordinator

Hygiene & Therapy ReportThe Programme in Dental Hygiene and Therapy has seen many changes over the years. When the School of Dental Hygiene opened its doors in 1984 the numbers of students trained was very small compared to the 28 students who recently graduated in June this year. During the last 27 years, Sheffield has graduated over 250 hygienists and therapists, who are playing an integral part in the oral health of the nation. Some of these graduates have become practice managers and tutors. Some have even decided to take the plunge and train to become dentists. But most have continued to provide patients with the best possible care, treatment and advice and promote the valued work of hygienists and therapists.

The field of dentistry is ever evolving and we have had some exciting opportunities over the years. The ability now that dental therapists can work in all sectors of dentistry was a huge step, along with the ‘extended duties’ further enhancing our role within the dental community. However there is more to come, with the prospect of Direct Access on the horizon who knows what will be next!

It is with great pride that I say that I am one of these Alumni. I would never have dreamed that I would be sat writing this now all those years ago when I embarked on a fascinating and rewarding career in Dental Hygiene

Staff MattersSome notable recent retirements from the School of Clinical Dentistry in recent years:

Professor Martin Atkinson Mrs Janet BickerProfessor Geoff CraigMs. Sally CraigMr Raj JoshiProfessor Peter P RobinsonProfessor Trevor WalshMr Sean WardDr Donald WattsProfessor Derrick WillmotDr Christine Yeoman

Linda Winstanley (née Davis)

It was with great sadness that members of staff in the School of Clinical Dentistry received the news that Linda had passed away on 26th February 2011 at home following a short illness. Anyone fortunate enough to speak to Linda during her illness could not help but be struck by her tremendous courage in her fight with pancreatic cancer. She will be remembered by generations of dental students and the dental community as a popular, talented and enthusiastic teacher, and by the many patients she cared for.

Linda’s former colleagues and friends gathered with her family at a packed and moving Requiem Mass on 10th March 2011 at St Matthew’s Church in the city centre to say their last farewells, and to support Ray and the family. We learned much about the things we didn’t know about Linda in the address, and it was a time to reflect on the good memories we each had.

Linda is survived by her husband Ray and their sons Richard and James, to whom our condolences go as they grieve their loss.

Tod O’Neil

It was with great sadness that we heard that Tod had passed away very recently. He will be remembered with affection by many former students whom he taught in the school from 1972 until 1987 initially as Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and specialising in Periodontology.

He graduated in Sheffield in 1950 and then undertook various hospital jobs eventually becoming a partner in general practice before returning to the CCDH in the early seventies. On his return to the school he quickly obtained his final FDS in 1973 and then in 1978 his MDS at the same time as co-authoring an undergraduate textbook on pharmacology. It was clear to all that he had a very astute mind and could talk with authority on a whole range of subjects. In addition, it was clear that he was a talented dentist as well and even after that accident in the mid seventies with a lawn mower in which he lost two fingers, he still returned to clinical dentistry and continued to produce high quality clinical work. He was very popular with his patients because of his caring chairside manner and also proud of his record of never keeping a patient waiting. He was very popular with students as he was always friendly and always willing to help. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a very nice man! To both Iris and Dominic we offer our condolences.

DPU OpeningThe refurbishment and expansion of the former Transitional Training UnitIt was after a review of former students conducted by the Dental School back in 2004 that the value of the Transitional Training Unit (now called Dental Practice Unit) to the students in Sheffield became clear. The School had been considering the future of the unit and the continuing need for it as the outreach programme was in its infancy and the thinking was that it may no longer be required. It was following on from this favourable former student review that an opportunity arose in 2005 to bid for additional funding to modernise and expand the unit . A proposal was put together by Peter Robinson, Ric van Noort and myself to expand the number of surgeries from 5 to 10 and in the process modernise the whole facility to make it compliant with current regulations. We hoped to do this by not altering the external dimensions of the building and thereby invoking planning permission which could have been difficult in a conservation area like Broomhill but by using the internal space more effectively. A proposal and planning outline was therefore sent to the Higher Education Funding Council for consideration and the school was delighted to receive an award of a grant of nearly £700,000 to thoroughly modernise the facility making it DDA complaint and increasing the number of surgeries. Some additional monies also came from NHS sources locally.

Work began in May 2007 and was completed in November 2007 with the unit opening again for patients in December of that year. The new facility consisted of 5 ground floor surgeries and 5 first floor surgeries. The old waiting room was made into two surgeries and the same for old surgery 1 on the ground floor. The patient’s entrance moved from Northumberland Road to Wellesley Road and was made wheelchair compliant. On the first floor the old Directors office was made into a surgery as was the old x-ray room

and a new x-ray room placed where the old lab was on the ground floor. The colour scheme of the new facility changed to blue and white in the surgeries. The number of staff also increased and the all important dental nurses in DPU increased to 10 and the number of tutors increasing to allow one upstairs and one downstairs so that the tutor/ student ratio stayed the same and students retained close mentoring support.

The refurbished DPU was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Author Dunworth in the presence of invited guests on the 17th March 2008. Having been is use now for 3 years it is reassuring that the new unit continues to be a popular placement for our fourth and final years as it has in the past and hopefully will continue to be so in the years to come.

OutreachFrom 2003-2005 a successful pilot of outreach training in primary care for all students was conducted at the Dental School. A a result of this pilot an expansion was planned as part of the School’s increased student entry. Now each dental student spends a total of 20 weeks in salaried service and general practice settings. The programme emphasises team-working, service delivery and holistic care in ‘real life’ work environments.

A total of 38 outreach surgeries are used 47 weeks each year. Salaried service sites include: Wheata Place and Firth Park in Sheffield; Wheatabridge in Chesterfield; Dearne Valley DAC in Mexborough, and Rotherham’s new health centre. Our general practice partners are: Taptonville House, Southey Hill, High Green and Fairlawns, which are all in Sheffield, as well as The Mount near Pontefract and Lynton House in Barnsley. A further contingency facility is in Goole Health Centre.

The volume of clinical work undertaken by students in these outreach centres is very beneficial: BDS students typically complete 200 restorations and 74 extractions across 460 patient appointments. But of course it is not just about

numbers, students also gain valuable insights into patient management, professionalism and clinical governance.

Looking Back…The history of the Dental Hospital and its staff and students from 1967 until 1973.

The CCDH was officially opened by the Duchess of Gloucester in 1953 (see below) which had been a major project for Professor GL Roberts, who can be seen just behind the Duchess to her right.

Professor Roberts was the Director of Dental Studies (who would now be called Dean) and had been appointed by the University of Sheffield in 1935, a post he held until 1967.

The year of 1967 was to turn out to be an unsettling year for the staff of Charles Clifford Dental Hospital however as on December 14th Professor GL Roberts suddenly and unexpectedly died in his office in the hospital at the age of 63. He was by this stage in his career not only the senior Professor in the Faculty of Medicine but also the senior Professor in the University and so the impact and shock spread through the University. His obituary written in The University of Sheffield Gazette in 1968 reflected on his many achievements and the sense of loss felt by both the university and hospital community. He had of course been a member of numerous local health committees and nationally had sat as the University’s representative on the GDC chairing the Ancillary Dental Workers Committee at one stage. He rose to be Vice Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery RCS Eng in 1963-64 and was President of the Odontological Section of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1962-63. He had led the dental school in Sheffield from 1935 but had apparently started to instigate succession plans for when he was due to retire in 1969 which must have been fortunate for those concerned.

The new Director of Dental Studies from 1968 was Professor E. L. Hampson who was Head of Operative Dentistry, later to be renamed in 1973 Restorative Dentistry. The successor to Professor Roberts was Professor P A Bramley who joined the school in 1969 as Professor of Dental Surgery. He came from an NHS background having been a Consultant in Oral Surgery in the South West for many years where he had been influential in lifting the profile of the specialty in the region. This period of the late sixties and early seventies also saw an increasing number of students joining the school some of whom came from Norway. The reason for this was because

of the insufficient provision for dental training in Norway and Britain was a favoured alternative for them. They integrated very well into student life in Sheffield and had a high profile towards the mid seventies because the cars they drove were icons of the time with the likes of MGB’s being common and an S Type Jaguar and a Triumph Stag being owned by two of them. For the home grown students who, if they were lucky, drove a Morris Minor merely looked on with the thoughts of, oh well may be one day…!

In 1971 Mr M O Hindle joined the school as Senior Lecturer in Oral Surgery and together with Professor Bramley set about re-designing the oral surgery course into what became known as the 1 month oral surgery block course. This gave students a month’s experience of outpatient care on locals as it was then called where standard exodontia was performed together with MOS. Interspersed were sessions observing inpatient oral surgery procedures in theatre which to many were a great preparation for future house officer and SHO jobs. The first two weeks of the block consisted of procedures under local anaesthesia and the second two weeks consisted of outpatient anaesthetics and performing exodontia under GA all provided by students under close supervision. At the end of this month students were generally pretty good at extracting teeth and reflecting flaps and removing bone. Most students had performed at least 100 extractions during the course and as many as 10 MOS procedures and may be have administered up to 15 inhalation general anaesthetics.

In 1972 Professor P H Burke joined the school as the first Professor of Child Dental Health. He was an Orthodontist from an NHS background in Cambridge but had an active research profile in facial growth. Under his umbrella came orthodontics and also now children’s dentistry which had previously been provided along side adult dental care on the second floor. Finally in January 1973 Professor CJ Smith joined the school as Head of Oral Pathology, taking the Chair previously held by Professor J J Hodson.

We hope to see many familiar faces coming back to see us and of course reminisce as well as to see how we have changed since you were last here!

New archive display cabinets in the School FoyerWe are now very fortunate to be able to display some of the material relating to the history of the school in three new all glass and lit display cabinets which have been placed in the entrance foyer of the school and have been purchased with a very generous donation from a graduate of the school Mr David Sayliss who qualified in 1952 when the Sheffield University dental training facility was situated in the Sheffield Royal Hospital.

The dental archive contains lots of interesting artifacts collected over the years many of which were collected by the first Dean of the School, Professor GL Roberts. We intend to make part of this display dynamic to record both the achievements and prizes awarded to current staff and students in the school. At a ceremony in December to which Mrs and Mrs Sayliss were invited the cabinets were officially unveiled and the photograph below records this enjoyable occasion.
