DESIGN SYNTHESISArchD students complete an independent, year long ArchD Project under the guidance of a faculty committee. The project could be either a comprehensive creative design or a theoretical dissertation on a selected topic.

The purpose of the project is to develop experiences in synthesizing a broad range of professional knowledge.

ELECTIVE COURSESStudents have the opportunity to take elective courses or professionally related topics from business, planning, computers and design technology, Asia Pacific studies, and other relevant contemporary interests.

Curriculum

The purpose of APCA is to further the understanding of Asia Pacific architecture.

• Strategically located in the Pacific Basin

• Develops literacy and advances scholarship in Asia Pacific architecture

• Focuses on informational exchanges among academicians, practitioners, government leaders, and others

Asia Pacific Center for Architecture(APCA)

Page 16: School of Architecture at the University of Hawai‘i

• A research and education center exploring issues of new technology and collaborative international design communication in the construction industry

• Focuses on the Asia Pacific region

Projects involve collaboration with architecture, construction and technology firms to expand their knowledge base and business capabilities in the innovative application of new construction technology and design.

Construction Process Innovative Laboratory(CPI Lab)

Page 17: School of Architecture at the University of Hawai‘i

Focuses on regional vernacular and historic, architectural and cultural preservation.

Activities include:

• Studying the restoration of historic architecture• Evaluating new construction within historic areas• Presenting design guidelines for historic towns• Creating historic structure reports• Documenting community and community-wide historic

inventories• Producing information for the National Register of Historic

Places material

The scholarly works of the Center concentrate on sites and projects within Hawai‘i and the Asia Pacific area in collaboration with universities in the region.

Established by Bob Wong, CEO of Geolabs-Hawai‘i, an international geo-technical/geo-environmental consulting firm. The endowment provides financial support towards research into hillside design for settlements.

• Focuses on the design of appropriate foundation and structural systems for buildings on hillsides

• Provides opportunities for students to explore the various issues of building with hillside conditions

• Concentrates on the integration of engineering and architecture• Represents the efforts by the School to educate architecture

students about the importance of resolving site problems

For project assignments within the Lab, students execute all phases of the design solution with engineers and other consultants that deal with hillside conditions.

Geolabs-Hawai‘i Hillside Design Laboratory

Page 19: School of Architecture at the University of Hawai‘i

Provides a setting for research and training in environmental design issues, which include:

• Examples of energy efficient equipment• Design tools and software for analysis• Production of instructional materials and models

The Lab allows for the simulation and modeling of sun and wind conditions, for different artificial and natural lightings, and offers configuration and equipment to perform research.
