School Newsletter Term 3 Week 3 2018 Welcome to this edition of our school newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who managed to attend their Teacher-Parent-Child interview earlier this week. We really appreciate the opportunity to work collaboratively with you, for the benefit of your child. I would be interested if any of you would like to comment on the mid-year reporting process we are always looking to improve the way we communicate with our community. Yesterday we hosted John Parsons at our school. He spoke to all of our children, and I am sure they enjoyed his presentation. I know that he speaks with conviction and passion, and talks about issues all of us need to consider. If you took the opportunity to hear him speak at last night’s open meeting, I am sure you will agree that his message is important and powerful. Please find attached a letter from our Board of Trustees regarding the Primary Teachers strike action next week. Our Board is in a relatively rare position, where we have members of both the NZEI (classroom teachers) and PPTA (Specialist teachers) working at our school. This allows the Board to keep the school open for supervision. Please note that there will be no classes nor instruction happening on this day. We hope that you will be able to support us by making alternate arrangements for your child on that day. Your support will be very much appreciated. Those who attended the ski day will be aware that it was a most disappointing day, with the field closing early, and some of our children not skiing at all. We are bound to go to Mt Hutt when they are open, even when we feel the day may not be all that good. However, I am pleased to inform you that Mt Hutt has been most generous and has offered to take those children who were registered back to Mt Hutt for another day. This includes one bus, and the school will cover the cost of the second bus. I hope to be able to confirm a date with you soon. As a school we really appreciate this generous offer from Mt Hutt, and look forward to a better day. Winter sport finishes Tuesday 14 August. I have been impressed by the standard of sportsmanship shown by our pupils. I know that there has been some disruption because of the weather, but those who have participated have done so in a very positive spirit, and have enhanced our reputation amongst intermediate schools. As I have mentioned before I would appreciate all families talking about appropriate behaviour on the buses coming to, and going home from, school. Our children are the public face of our school, and it would be good if they could maintain their high standards of behaviour in the bus. Thank you for your support with this. Please remember that we are always happy to talk with you regarding your child’s time at school. Please feel welcome to contact the school at any time if you have any queries. Best wishes Phil Tappenden Principal

Kirkwood Intermediate Quiz Night Coming Soon Your friendly hard working PTA group are hosting a quiz night on Sunday 9 September to raise funds for sports tracksuits with the school logo on. Your children will wear these when they present Kirkwood at events, trips, camps etc. We are asking for your help in our search for donations of raffle prizes and/or vouchers that we could use on the night to help boost fundraising. If you can help with this, or you know someone or a local business that could, please contact us via our email [email protected] or phone Penny on 021 721 776. We are also looking for a MC for the evening, and wondering if there are any contacts within the school community, we could approach. Please let us know if you are interested or if you know of someone who may be. In the meantime, please save the date in your diaries. More details will be sent home with your child today.

2018 China Trip Part way through the July school holidays, ten pupils and two teachers had the opportunity to explore China. We left on Wednesday 18 July and after a 12 hour flight arrived in Guangzhou, thankfully we had a bit of time to spare so Mr Gaut took us on an adventure and we found a food court. As ‘Kirkwood United’, we all tried some very interesting Chinese dishes for lunch, we found the food to be delicious!

After a second flight, which was only 3 hours in length, we had made it to Beijing. Our first two days were exciting as we explored this busy city. Some highlights for our group while in Beijing were, the Temple of Heaven, the Pearl Markets, the Summer Palace and seeing the general lifestyle of the Chinese people. We were able to see some beautiful buildings with long, rich histories of Emperors and different dynasties. Haggling is common at the Pearl Markets and was a very different experience for us, which encouraged us to quickly learn about converting yuan into New Zealand dollars to get a good price. We also really enjoyed the boat ride across the Emperor’s lake; there have been many great memories made as a group.

Our days at the Chinese school were busy - making new friends, teaching rakau and the cup song, learning Chinese calligraphy and songs as well as experiencing a huge school cafeteria, which was a very different experience! It was a great opportunity to see how school works in a different country and try new things. We all enjoyed teaching physical education games such as elastics and a football/badminton game that we pretty much invented. Duck, duck, goose was also a favourite amongst the pupils in China!

We were fortunate to continue to travel and see incredible sights such as The Great Wall of China, where we were all able to walk a section! Another highlight was the Beijing Zoo, it was a great chance to see some rare animals but the conditions were very sad. In addition to these places we also visited the 2008 Olympic venues, the Water Cube and the Bird’s Nest, as well as the Olympic torch and Olympic Village areas which we found to be interesting. Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City also hold important places in Chinese history and often we were in awe of how immense these places are in addition to hearing about the incredible history behind the building of these structures. The National Museum of China was also very impressive in both the artwork and size of the building!

We will all recall some amazing chances to explore a different culture, some interesting memories for us as Kirkwood United and the opportunity to represent Kirkwood with pride as global youth ambassadors. We would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Toaolamai and Mr Gaut for their support on the trip. Thank you to our parents for encouraging us to take up such an awesome opportunity. We all had an amazing time and hope to see more Kirkwood students exploring the world in years to come! By Katie and Alex

Xanthia’s Prague Experience Xanthia from Room 1 went to Prague in July to perform at The New Prague Dance Festival. This opportunity was not only an amazing learning experience but also quite a success for Xanthia and the other Canterbury Ballet dancers. Canterbury Ballet placed third overall out of more than 13 teams representing 10 different countries and approximately 300+ competitors. As an international festival it boasted competitors from a variety of countries including Australia, Belgium, France, Israel, Malta, Panama, Poland, Singapore, South Africa and United States. Xanthia danced as a part of the Canterbury Ballet team who won several awards; the sponsor award Bidfoof Czech Republic PRIX and the Grishko Awards of 1000 Euros (Grishko is a prestigious ballet product manufacturer from Russia and have outlets all over the world). There was so much talent on show and many lovely friends were made. Below you can see some photos taken of Xanthia and her sister Evie in the streets of Old Town Prague. Well done Xanthia!
