School Newsletter Term 1 Week 11 2016 Welcome to this final edition of our school newsletter for this term. School will finish at 2:55pm as usual tomorrow and re-opens on Monday 2 May at 8:40am. I hope that all of our friends, families and staff manage to have a good break with some quality family time included. This term has been a very busy one for all of us, and I know the staff are certainly looking forward to some time to themselves. I hope you managed to attend your TeacherParentChild interview earlier this week. These are really important times where the welfare of your child is most important. Reports I have had back from our staff is that they enjoyed these meetings, and that much valuable discussion was had. I hope you felt the same. It is interesting to walk around the school during this past week and to see how our children have grown into a school. From the beginning of the year through until now we have seen such a growth in all of our students. Most have a real sense of belonging and are proud to be part of the Kirkwood community something that means so much to all of us. Again, I hope you and your family also feel a very important part of our school. I will be away from school at the beginning of Term 2, representing our school at events off shore. While I am away Peter Aitken will be Acting Principal and I know he will be working hard to ensure the school continues smoothly. Please feel welcome to contact him if you should have any questions or concerns. The Board of Trustees elections are happening soon. Nomination forms will be sent out to you at the beginning of May. If you wish to stand for the Board, please remember to get your nomination in by 12 noon on 20 May. Serving your school and community on a Board is a very valuable way to ensure our school continues to grow and thrive. Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable break. Phil Tappenden Principal Lost Property There is a large amount of lost property needing to be collected. Please name all items of your uniform so we can return it to the correct person.

Kids Literature Quiz Competition On Wednesday 30 March, two teams participated in the Canterbury heat of the Kids Literature Quiz competition. The students represented Kirkwood admirably. The teams had to answer 100 questions in 10 different categories all to do with children's literature. Over 60 teams contested for a place in the National final to be held in Wellington. One team member won a spot prize for answering a question from the 2015 National final and I won a book voucher for answering an adult question about the writing of Katherine Mansfield. This voucher will buy a book for the library. Year 7 team members will continue to prepare for the 2017 competition. Wayne Mills the writer of the questions and the quiz master suggested: 365 days to go until the 2017 competition, 52 books to read, 4 million words, on average 20 pages of reading every day. Kirkwood is up for the challenge. Thanks to all our team members you worked hard and gave it your best.

However, in order for us to do so, we need your help. We would like your unique family recipes - of all flavours and looks from all around the world. All recipes will be appreciated. We will be including the following categories in our cookbook:

sweet treats;

traditional family recipes;

baked goods;

fresh foods;

meat dishes;

dietary specific recipes;

International. We are aiming to market our school Cookbook around the Christmas sales. It will be a great Christmas present for family and friends. Please send all suggestions and recipes to either the following website: http://goo.gl/forms/Lbj9l0Zzgf or email: [email protected] or a hand written copy can be given to the office.

ASB Offer to our School If you are buying a house and taking out your mortgage through ASB, please ask for the donation to come to Kirkwood school and we will receive $1,000 for each home loan. Thank you.

Do you have these Novels? We have had some novels go missing from our novel sets. Some of these novels are now out of print, making it impossible to buy. I thought that some pupils might have a copy or two at home that they have read and no longer want. We would like to buy these to complete our sets. The price would be determined by the condition of the book. The first two books we would like are from the Thieves trilogy.

Thieves, by Ella West

Year 8 Wellington Camp The total cost of $525.00 for this year’s Wellington Camp has been charged on all Year 8 accounts. Please note, the $100.00 non-refundable deposit is due for payment by the start of Term 2 as flights for this trip need to be booked.

We understand that this is a fairly substantial cost for some families and if this trip is going to cause your family financial hardship please contact our Principal Phil Tappenden as soon as possible.

Kirkwood loves having students come from different countries as we too learn about new cultures and customs like Japan.

Homestay Families Needed We are looking for homestay families for our short and long term international students. The students from China will be attending Kirkwood School for 2-3 weeks at the beginning of Term 3. For a long term student from Japan, we are looking for a homestay family who can host her from Term 2 to the end of Term 4 this year. If you are interested in hosting a student/students, please email the International Student Coordinator, Sonya Song [email protected] or you can phone the office on 348 7718 for more information.

Board Of Trustees Election 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Board of Trustee Elections Friday 3 June

In June this year parents and caregivers of our school community will be electing a new Board of Trustees for the next three-year term.

The Board sets the vision for our school. It is responsible for the school’s performance and ensures that all legal requirements are met. You don`t need to be an expert however you do need to be prepared to learn and the really good thing is that as part of a team, the responsibility is shared.

The Board meets once every month and occasionally there will be other meetings in-between as required (eg the financial or property sub-committee may meet). There is some reading to be done in preparation for the meetings. Training is available for new trustees and being a trustee looks great on your CV!

Parent nomination forms will be posted out to you at the beginning of May. There are three ways you can participate in these elections:

standing for election; nominating someone for the election (but please ask them first!); and voting in the election.

If you are interested and wish to find out more about it, please either collect an information guide from the office, and/or contact the Board Chair I wish to say a big thank you to all our current trustees for your time and effort, some standing for re-election and some moving on. Please ring me if you have any questions on 021 02935054 Regards Paul Lancaster Board of Trustees Chairperson

Please note: If you would like to check you are on the voting list, please call the office on ph348 7718 Thank you

Inter Intermediate Swimming Champs

On Tuesday 5 April, 38 Kirkwood students travelled to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre to compete in the Canterbury Inter Intermediate Swimming Champs hoping to win events and bragging rights.

We competed hard and earnt many podium finishes. We had a great day, it was loud and hot and we were having lots of fun. Kirkwood finished second overall, which was a great achievement for us.

We would like to thank the parents who helped on the day and most of all we would like to thank Mr Gaut for all the work he put in to ensure it was a successful day.

AIMS Games – Basketball A Team

This year our boys’ basketball A Team are going to participate in a big competition called the NZ Aims games. They will be playing in Tauranga and for a majority of our players, this will be their first basketball trip. We are choosing to go this year because we feel that we have a very strong and talented team that will not only do well in our local Wharenui tournament but in bigger ones also.

The NZ Aims Games is a competition for Year 7 and 8’s from all around New Zealand. The tournament will be held at ASB Baypark Arena, 81 Truman Lane, Mount Maunganui from Monday 5 September to Friday 9 September.

International Food Day

The International Food Festival was a HUGE success this past Friday. It was one of the biggest turn outs we have had in years. I would like to thank all the parents/caregivers, whanau, students and staff for helping out, we could not do it without you. I know there were a lot of full tummies and many students commented that it was a great experience. A big thank you! Mrs Climo and Mrs Eum

A Message from our Counsellor - Bullying Bullying can happen anywhere. It is important to know what bullying is, and how to address it. Useful information can be found in the Kia Kaha resource from NZ Police (revised 2012) available to schools.

Bullying The identifying features of bullying: It is deliberate, hurtful behaviour. It is often repeated over a period of time. It is often difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves. It is difficult for those who bully to learn new social behaviours. The bully has, and exercises, power over the victim. Cyberbullying can be disseminated very quickly to a wider audience.

Bullying can take a number of forms: Physical violence, for example hitting and kicking. Bullying of students with special needs, racist or homophobic bullying. Emotional and/or verbal, for example name calling, exclusion, threatening and coercion. Damage to property, for example taking lunches or destroying school books. Cyberbullying, for example by mobile phone and the internet. Harassment, for example making a person fear for their own or their family’s safety.

All forms of bullying can be damaging to the development of both the person being bullied and the person doing the bullying.

It is our job as adults to model appropriate behaviour and assist the development of all our young people.

Could you sometimes be a bully? Check out this link (page 67) http://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default/files/publications/kk-senior-teaching-guide.pdf

Another more recent resource available to schools is called Bullying prevention and response: A guide for schools (2015).

Our principal Phil Tappenden was on the Bullying Prevention advisory group. It has very helpful information in addressing the subject including looking at the participant roles in bullying. We know that student bullying mostly occurs when adults are not within ear shot. Students need to know what to do when bullying occurs and stand up for themselves and others. Hearing from your peers that it’s not okay and getting further help from adults if bullying continues, are important skills for all students to learn.

Our first Bullying-free NZ week is on Monday 16 May until Friday 20 May ending on Pink Shirt Day. Support any activities at school and home around this to reinforce safer, stronger, more respectful communities.

Wishing you all bully-free and happy holidays. Regards Sue Molloy School Counsellor
