    Welcome to a New and Exciting School Year!The new school year is underway and there is plentyin store to provide an exciting and enrichingeducational experience for the scholars at VLTAcademy. The theme for the 2013-2014 school year isOne Band with One SoundMarching intoAchievement.     VLT participated in the Mid-west Regional Black Family ReunionParade on Saturday, August 17, 2013along with 300 other groups.

    The staff members had theopportunity to meet and greet Cincin-

    nati families in the Avondale neighbor-hood and to pose with pride with Cin-cinnati Mayor, Mark Mallory. Thestudents really enjoyed our Sparklethe Clown. She was a big hit!

    Pick your sport and Just Do It! VLT is excited to kick off the 2013-2014 sports program.

    Sign up sheets will be located outside of each classroom for students to select their sports of choice!See Mr. Lambert (Grades K-6) and Mr. Jones (Grades 7-12) if you have any questions.

    VLT will be providing FREE sports physicals to students in grades 5-12

    on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 9:00AM

    at VLT Academy in the main building on the first floor. The physicals will begin at 9:00AM and will be scheduled in15 minute time slots, on a first-come first-serve basis. Staff members and team coaches will be available to assist.

    Thanks to all of the Friends of VLT Academy who havecontributed to a successful start of a new school year. Thesupport of the community has a strong impact on helpingcommunity schools succeed. We appreciate the in-kinddonations and ongoing community partnerships.

    Costco donated over 425 book bags with supplies toVLT students. Costco team members attended VLTsReadyFest Orientation and met parents and allowedstudents to pick out their book bag. Thanks to Costcofor helping our students to come to school prepared.

    Horseshoe Casinois not only a neighbor, theiremployees are collecting supplies to donate to VLT

    Academy for the students. Thanks to the Horseshoestaff for helping to keep our students stocked withschool supplies.

    Lowesdonated supplies for VLTs gardening pro-ject. The mulch and shrubs allowed VLT to beautifythe flower beds out side of the primary school build-ings.

    Mr. and Mrs. Sams, parentsof Erinn Sams, donated mums toadd to the beauty of the flowerbeds.

    Molly Malones Pub and Grill donated 20soccer jerseys to support our new soccer program. Thestudents will be able to enjoy participating in VLTssoccer program in the Spring. Thank you, Mr. Dixon.

    Reaching Out For Kidswill be hosting 25-30VLT students to a VIP experience at the CincinnatiReds baseball game on September 30, 2013. Students

    will be able to sit in the VIP booth and meet theplayers.

    Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Sue Koslovsky, ournew Friends of VLT from Toledo, Ohio, donated anddelivered thousands of dollars worth of classroom fur-niture and teacher supplies over the summer. She ac-cumulated awesome teaching supplies over her manyyears of teaching and wanted to continue to impactlearning even after her retirement. She selected VLT to

    entrust her precious treasures. The supplies will be-come a part of the teacher resource room to benefit theteaching and learning of students at VLT Academy.

    PARENTS ARE OUR POWER...Join VEPO Today!

    Beginning September 3, 2013 VLT High School students will report to school 8:00AM2:35PM. Students are tardy at 8:07AM. Free GED classes are offered Wednesdays 4:15-5:15PM in the VLTs main Sycamore building. If you would like your child to eat breakfast at school, please complete the form sent home

    and return to school with your child. Breakfast is FREE for VLT students.

    SCHOOL IS CLOSED LABOR DAY - September 2, 2013.

    ENROLLMENT: There are still spaces available in grades K-12. Call today to apply.

    VLT has a before and after-school intervention (3:30 PM-

    5:30 PM). Grades K-1 are at the Mansfield location. Grades2-8 are at the Annex 2, 12th Street location after school.Snacks are served. Space is limited Cost: Free

    LaBlonds Boys & Girls After-School Program (3:00PM-8:00PM)Ages 5 (kindergarten) - 18 , Cost: FREE

    Over-the Rhine CRC Girls on the Run Track Team

    Cincinnati Stars Marching Band is accepting applications.

    Gentle Lambs Daycare Center (New Location opening in October,2013 across from VLT main bldg.), 18 months - preschool. They

    will also offer a before and after-school program .

    The Salvation Army, 112 Clay Street offers an afterschool pro-gam, Monday-Friday, 2:30-6:00PM, Cost: $60/week. Somescholarships are available.

    Uptown Arts offers art, music, acting & dance classes forgrades Kindergarten-4th. Classes begin Sept. 10, 2013.

    The community programs are not affiliated with VLT Academy, therefore, VLT is notliable for these programs.

    Thanks to the parents and families who attended theReady Fest Back-to-School Orientation on August19th. Students received free book bags and schoolsupplies. Parents met some of VLTs community part-ners, signed up for programs and enjoyed entertain-ment by the Cincinnati Stars Marching Band, led byMr. Eryk McDaniel.

    VLT has partnered with other community groups to provide extracurricular activities forVLT students. Sign-up information is available in VLTs office. Please check if you areinterested in receiving more information on any of the following:

    VEPO is VLTs Very Effective Parent Organization. VEPO meets monthly to discuss and implement ways

    to enhance the academic and extracurricular activities of all VLT students and to promote the successfulmission of VLT Academy. VEPO meetings are the third Tuesday of each month. Parents are needed asclassroom representatives, fundraising committee members, special events committee members, schoolvolunteers and community supporters. Please lend your talents to have a positive impact on the scholarsat VLT Academy.

    Parents are encouraged to attend either the 9:30AM session or the 5:00PM session.At times different activities may take place at each meeting.

    The first meeting will be held September 17, 2013.
