Menahga seventh grade stu-dent Alayna Lake, daughter of Randy and Chris Lake, wrote an essay “What My Father Means to Me” for the Minne-sota Twins 2012 Father of the Year Essay Contest.
Her essay took second place for the seventh grade division and she submitted her essay to the Review Messenger to share with our readers. Thank you, Alayna and congratulations.
F Father. My father, to me, is like an ingredient in a cake and without that ingredient, the cake doesn’t taste right. That’s what life would be like without my Dad.
A Anything. Anything that involves sports, like buying equipment, buying something for sports or building some-thing…my dad is involved. In fact, my sisters and I asked for a softball field. Guess what we got – a softball field. I’m so lucky to have my dad.
T Things. There’s always times where something gets broken or wrecked. At a nor-mal house those things would get thrown away, but not at this house. My dad will always try to fix things or use his magic and find a way to get it back together.
H Hard Times. Hard times are always hard to get through, but with my dad’s support things seem to be better. Re-cently, my little brother and I got separated from our family on a subway train in Washing-ton, D.C. It was really scary, but when we got back to my family, my dad kind of cried. Just those few tears mean so much and show me how much he cares.
E Every second. Every sec-ond of every day, seems to be filled with things my dad would do or things he taught me. My dad is always there!
R Remember. Remember, everyone in the world has won-derful dads. That’s great and stuff, but I LOVE my dad for who he is and what he does for me. I would do anything in the world for my dad. He means so much that words can’t even say. I LOVE YOU DAD!

LUNCHWhat’What’s s
forfor ?“Spark Your Motivation, Ignite Our Determination” served as the theme as youth from around the state gathered at the Family, Career and Com-munity Leaders of America (FCCLA) 2012 State meeting held April 19-21 in Blooming-ton, Minnesota.
Attendees participated in a three-day dynamic state meet-ing of unique opportunities that challenged, informed, and motivated members and their chapter advisers to explore op-portunities available through FCCLA: The Ultimate Leader-ship Experience. They exam-ined new ways to help them succeed in their families, ca-reers and communities.
The meeting began on Thurs-day, April 19th with the open-ing session led by the state officers and the motivational speaker Scott Greenberg. Scott made everyone laugh as he
shared his personal stories and his powerful message.
On Friday morning a ses-sion was held on distracted driving prevention to pro-mote safer driving for teens. This session was highlighted by Maryann Abbate, who’s personal story was told in the movie: “The 5th Quarter”.
The meeting ended on Sat-urday with a special perfor-mance by Sheltered Reality and the announcement of the national Star Event advanc-ers.
The state meeting also is where members of the Me-nahga chapter competed in STAR Events. STAR events stand for: Students Taking Action with Recognition. The following students re-ceived recognition and med-als: Phutaneth Lohsakul, Alisha Lindquist, Donald Wurdock, Abigail Jokela and
Bailey Yliniemi; gold med-als: Abigail Jokela, Jessica Yrjo, Hailey Usher, and Hai-ley Craig; silver: Amy Hil-lukka, Katie Holden, Kaisa Luedke, Jessica Johnson and Tayler Simi; bronze: Saman-tha Acuff, Brianna Paulson and Bailey Yliniemi advance to the National Leadership Conference that will be held in July in Orlando, Florida.
The state FCCLA meeting also provided dynamic work-shops for the members and their advisors in the areas of leadership, career explora-tion, preparing for college, youth violence prevention, traffic safety and current is-sues affecting teens. Mem-bers and advisors were able to take valuable information back to use in their schools and community.
Menahga FCCLA students competed at the state meeting in Bloomington April 19 - 21.
Reduce, Reuse, Recyle! In honor of Earth Day, April 22nd, 5th grade students were chal-lenged last week when they came to the Elementary Media Center to think of new uses for a clean, empty plastic peanut butter jar. They brought their ideas back written on posters this week. Results were quite remarkable! Pictured are the kids from Mrs. Bjelkengren’s class who came up with a whopping 615 re-uses. Their ideas ran from sorting and storing nails, screws, bolts and a wide variety of craft items, to food, snack and drink carrying containers. Let’s not forget to mention that you could store bait and bugs if you punched holes in the tight-fitting lid. These jars could be very useful for saving coins and cash. Stor-age for small collections of all sorts were mentioned, as well as tiny toys and game pieces. Some envisioned them as craft projects. The list goes on and on. Should a used plastic jar be just tossed into the trash? No! Not when it can be recycled or definitely re-used. Per-haps these students will never view a peanut butter jar in quite the same way, ever again. Congratulations to all three classes for their useful ideas!
