THE SULTAN'S SCHOOL NEWS

until the end of November. This is

a great opportunity to have your

say and help shape our future

development.

In the last newsletter, we

mentioned that the school was

taking part in the Box Appeal

organised by the Radisson Hotel.

At an assembly last week, the

organisers of the appeal visited the

school and informed the students

that more than 2000 boxes were

collected and over 30% of that

total (just over 600 boxes) were

donated by our school. This is a

truly remarkable achievement,

and shows the true sense of

community that exists within the

school.

That sense of community continued

on Tuesday 28th October when

nearly 200 of our students and

teachers joined thousands more

on the Oman Cancer Association

walk. This event in Quram Park

has grown considerably over

the last few years and is part of a

worldwide walkathon that raises

money to help fight this terrible

from the principal›'s desk

I have lost count of the number

of times I have told students that

there are three important words

that cost nothing to say, but

they can have a huge impact on

everyone and yet they are never

used as much as they should

be. These words are 'please' and

'thank you' and for this edition

of the newsletter, I would like to

concentrate on saying 'thank you'.

I would like to begin by thanking

everyone who took the time to

provide us with such positive

feedback on the first edition of the

newsletter. As I am sure you will

appreciate, a great deal of time

and effort went into its production

and it is pleasing to know how

much it was appreciated. I am

sure you will find this month's

edition just as exciting.

Next I would like to offer my thanks

to all members of our community

who have taken the time to post a

suggestion on the notice boards

in the front office regarding the

development of our new strategic

plan. If you have not yet posted,

it is not too late as we will be

keeping the notice boards in place

disease. Along with the 210 T-shirts

purchased by our students and

teachers, the school also raised

an additional 210 Rials from a bake

sale, 700 Rials from 'dress down

day' and 48 Rials from an amazing

group of Year 7 boys who made

loom bands for this worthy cause.

Looking ahead, I hope that in

the near future we will make the

school one of the leading eco-

schools in the region by reducing

our carbon footprint in a number

of areas. We have already got off

to a great start with the annual

Tree Day which encouraged

students to buy plants and trees

as well as educating them on the

importance of sustainability. We

are planning many more eco-

initiatives throughout the year

and I would encourage everyone

to take an active interest in these

events.

from the HEAD OF PRIMARY

In the pages of this second issue you will have the opportunity of reading about the wide variety of activities our children have enjoyed over the last month. Rather than repeat any of this, I thought I would take the opportunity to write about something which hap-pens in Primary about which you may be unaware.

During this term we receive weekly visits from a group of masters’ stu-dents from SQU, who are complet-ing their training to become teachers. This year we have twelve ladies who are following the routine of an Eng-lish homeroom for the day. Their time here enables them to observe teach-ing methodologies and our schemes of work in action. They interact with the children and staff, in an experience which can broaden their understand-ing immeasurably. On the shoulders of trainee teachers such as these lies the responsibility of educating the ris-ing generation of Oman’s children and carrying forward the amazing progress the country has made over the last forty years. It is the school’s privilege in taking part to help shape their understanding and training.

Outside of the curriculum our under 11's boys and girls recently took part in the Muscat Primary Sports’ League 'Skittleball'Tournament. Both teams performed particular well, showing excellent teamwork and skills with the boys finishing in first place and the girls coming second. For those of you wondering what skittleball is, it is a game with similarities to dodgeball, with a large focus on catching and throwing at a target.

On 29th October sixteen Year 5

students were delighted to attend

The Stal Gallery’s latest exhibition,

entitled “Austria Oman under the

Same Sky”, where they participated in

an exciting workshop led by Austrian

artist Erik Hortnagl. The exhibition was

being held in honour of the Austrian

National Day and the inauguration

of the Austrian Economic Trade and

Commercial Delegation in Muscat.

The children were inspired by the

whole experience and we were

very grateful to the Stal Gallery for

giving us opportunity to extend art

education beyond the classroom,

into the community, and beyond.

Also this month we had twelve students selected from our

Primary gifted and talented programme to attend golf lessons

and a trick shot show at Al Mouj golf course at the Wave. Along

with some secondary students we attended the NBO golf Classic

held here in Oman for its second successive year. We hope that

it will inspire some of our students to take up golf in the future

and although enjoyable, are sure they will agree that the game

is not as easy as the professionals make it look!

The music department was very privileged to host a visit from the American world music band Matuto. They were

brought to us with the assistance of the US embassy and spent the day with us on October 19th. During the day, the

band delighted primary and secondary audiences in performing two concerts, with both groups of students adding

much vocal support! The band also provided drumming and composing workshops to Year 5 and Year 10 students,

which were also received with great enthusiasm.

I was born and raised in England.

I am one of seven brothers and

sisters and I have three beautiful

adult children. My elder two

daughters are at university and

my son is currently studying for

his A’ Levels, so I am here alone

in Oman without my family at the

moment.

I love working with young people

and I feel I have a lot to learn

from them as they have a lot

to learn from me. As well as my

main job as a physics/science

teacher I also work as a boarding

supervisor and I am learning

a lot of new Arabic language

skills from the boarders. They

are fantastic teachers! I studied

Arabic in England for about two

years and this is what really gave

me the encouragement to move

and work in the Middle-East. I

think everybody should learn a

second language. Not only does it

open up a world of opportunities,

but it also gives you a greater

global understanding of the world

we live in. The people in Oman

have been extremely friendly and

hospitable, so I think it has been a

really positive move for me.

My hobbies include hiking,

swimming and travelling. I’m

hoping to stop off in Turkey this

Christmas holiday on my way

back to England. I’m really looking

forward to see some of the sites in

Istanbul.

What I like most about the majority

of students at The Sultan's School

is the respect they show for their

teachers and adults. My students

frequently hold my classroom

door open for me. They offer to

carry my bag when they can see

that I am struggling and have

given me some lovely small

presents for Eid, etc.

I am the newest teacher at The

the school year started. I am

delighted to be in Oman and

I am from New Zealand and I’llbe starting my eleventh year of

teaching Mathematics here at The

taught in New Zealand, England,

UAE and Indonesia. My wife is

two young children aged five and

I am Janine and I am a secondary

English teacher from England.

I also help with the under 14s

I have always enjoyed teaching

chemistry and like to see at least

some of my students getting

enthusiastic and sharing my love

for the subject. I started teaching

in Southbourne in the UK then

moved to Australia to join my

family. There I worked initially in

the state system but soon moved

into the private sector when I

joined Caulfield Grammar in

Melbourne. Apart from teaching

chemistry I was also assistant

boarding housemaster. My first

overseas posting was in Oman in

1994, where I stayed for 6 years,

then as head of department to

Kuwait for a further six years. I

had a brief time in Jordan before

I moved to Vietnam and finally

Shanghai where I taught for six

years and had my first experience

of teaching mostly "local" rather

than international students. In

my thirty years I have taught IB, A,

A/S, IGCSE, AP and KS3 National

Curriculum.

Here in Oman I enjoy a quiet

beach, cooking and eating out

and wish I could continue to buy

works of art; it’s important to

support young artists. I would

like more spare time to keep

up with learning the gu-zheng (

Chinese string instrument). It was

a joy converting and restoring an

old riverside building into an art

gallery in the old “Shanghainese” style on the outskirts of Shanghai

in a small water town, where

I opened the gallery I always

wanted...happy days.

December is an important month for Diploma

Programme students, in both Year 12 and Year 13. For

Year 13 students, 11th December is a vitally important,

and dreaded date. The extended essay, the final

copy, is due to be handed in to the DP Coordinator.

This marks the end of 11 months of reading, research,

analysis, experimentation and plain hard work. For the

Year 12s, December is the month in which they begin

their extended essays and the process outlined above.

The extended essay is one of the core requirements

of the Diploma Programme. It is an independent, self-

directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-

word paper.

As a required component, it provides:

• practical preparation for the kinds of

undergraduate research required at tertiary level

education

• an opportunity for students to engage in an

in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen

subject.

Emphasis is placed on the research process:

• formulating an appropriate research question

• engaging in a personal exploration of the topic

• communicating ideas

• developing an argument.

Participation in this process develops the capacity to:

• analyse

• synthesise, and

• evaluate knowledge.

Students are supported throughout the process with

advice and guidance from a supervisor who is a teacher

at the school. If you have any questions about the

extended essay and its process, please do not hesitate

to contact the Diploma Programme Coordinator.

Please note that Year 11 and Year 13 students will have

full IB and IGCSE mock examinations from Monday,

5th January to Thursday, 15th January.

Senior Volleyball Season Results, Muscat Sports League (MSL) & Ministry tournament:The volleyball season was a mixture of success and disappointment forthe secondary school. Whilst teamstrained twice a week, totalling threehours in addition to PE lessons, it’s back to the drawing board on key skills!

Our friendly pre-tournament gamessaw wins for U14 boy’s vs ABA and U14girls vs ABA, and also a win for U16boys vs TAISM.In tournament play, our U16 teams came a disappointing 6th (for boys) and last place for girls, and the U19 girls came last and the U19 boys came 3rd.
