Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Building Works Dear Parents/carers, Welcoming news. We have officially been informed from DET (Department of Education and Training) Building works will begin on Building A which is the administration area, Art room and P-2 area next month. I shall keep you informed exactly when and the arrangements for preparation of building site. Students in the Foundation-Year 2 areas will be relocated to the middle building whilst building works are completed. I shall keep the school community informed at all times regarding the stages of building works once I receive official plans. Commencement date of the Building Works are the beginning of March. If parents could avoid York St during Building works as there will be no access to the front entry or pedestrian crossing.

Curriculum Overviews and essential Agreements Term 1 Curriculum overviews have been prepared and will be posted on our website by the end of this week. Please refer to the website to see what areas of the curriculum your child will be covering this term. Class PYP Essential Agreements will be available on the school website also. This will give you an insight into understandings children have about working co-operatively in a safe environment. School Grounds Supervision Staff are rostered on to supervise the school grounds from 8.45- 9am and from 3.15-3.30pm.Please make sure your child is not here unsupervised by family members before and after these times. Children playing on the play equipment who walk home may be asked to leave before 3.30pm. We believe children are safer walking home in pairs or groups. If you are unable to supervise your child/ children before school please book you’re a place with OSH Club, before and after school. Parking Please be mindful when dropping and collecting your child/ren. It has been brought to our attention once again that cars are parking over the school crossing which is illegal. Please abide the traffic rules or parking infringements may occur from the Moreland City

Council Parking Officer. SAFETY REMINDERS- USING THE SUPERVISED CROSSING A reminder to cross the road at the school crossing at all times please. We would like to remind parents the importance of modelling safe walking practices by using the school patrolled or pedestrian crossing. Parents and children darting across busy York Street can be very distressing for drivers and sends a poor message to children about road safety. In the interests of your children and others driving in and around the school please cross where there is a school crossing for safety reasons. The school crossing is supervised before and after school in your best interests. Thank you for your cooperation SUNSMART POLICY: Term 1, 2017 No Hat No Play!

ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY! Significant absence has a profound impact on your child’s learning. Parent responsibility Parents/ Carers are required to ensure their child attends school and to provide an explanation for their child’s absence from school. The principal by law must meet the obligation to record in writing the reason (if any) given by the parent. We are currently reviewing our attendance process at GWPS and we will inform you of the changes in due course. Please continue to make sure your child attends daily as well as being on time for the beginning of the school day at 8.50am. Please refer to the DET guidelines below and attached on the school website.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist

beyond the classroom. The camps, sports and excursions fund helps ensure that no student

will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun

activities. It is part of making Victoria the education state and the Government’s

commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSION FUND (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the cost of trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125.00 for primary school students $225.00 for secondary students More information: www.education.vic.gov.au/csef A new application must be submitted each year. 2017 application online or at the school office.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SCHOOL COUNCIL SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2017 What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within state wide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on school council? For most schools, there are three possible categories of membership: A mandated elected Parent category- more than one third of the total members must be from this. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. Do I need experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. Please come to the office to collect either 5A Self Nomination form for Parent Member category or 5B Nomination if you wish to nominate another. EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. His information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Please be aware from March 1st 2014, new federal government laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please inform your child’s teacher so we can work together to get your child to school every day. Enjoy your week ahead. Pamela Streete Principal

Dear Families, We have had a busy week within the BASC Program, participating in the school picnic and games evening, tasting new food and engaging in new cognitive and imaginative play activities. We are continuing our healthy eating habits with some new items to the menu this year. The children this week have been learning how to make quick, easy and yummy wraps. They have helped each other prepare the different salad ingredients and then chose the ingredients their wrap. The children enjoyed the new and delicious meal for afternoon tea and thought it was exciting as some children have similar food at home. As well as these yummy wraps, the children enjoyed some lovely fruit donated to the school from one of the families. We are very thankful for this as the children were able to make up their own fruit icy-pole which they froze and ate the next day. They were very excited, asking several times, "when can we eat our icy-pole?". It has been great for the children's learning and development for them to have the time and opportunity to make their own food and feel the satisfaction. On Friday afternoon, the BASC Program participated in the school picnic and games evening. We walked over as a group and formed our team to complete each activity. The children had a lot of fun trying new activities and working together to achieve success. They worked hard individually and with partners to compete against others to win races and improve their skills. It was delightful to see how well they all worked together, and to also have the families, teachers and children all out enjoying the experience together. With the BASC Program this week the children have been engaging in some new cognitive and imaginative experiences. The Boggle game has been popular where the children have a timer set and have to try and make up as many words as possible from the letters drawn, within the time frame. The player with the most words, wins! The children have been quite engaged and competitive with this experience which has created new bonds between children and enhanced their cognitive development. Others have explored their imagination and creativity as they have engaged in play based learning experiences such as the new tea party set. With this experience the children have enjoyed sharing conversations, exploring their imagination, social skills, knowledge of daily life experiences and contributing to new and already formed friendships. With these experiences, the children within the BASC Program are able to explore all areas of learning and development at their own pace and based on their current interests, creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for learning. We look forward to seeing you soon. From Nicki (BASC Co-ordinator)
