REPORTS AND STUDENT LED CONFERENCES/PYP PROGRAMME June 28th and 29th are the days we are holding our Student led conferences. Our teachers will begin preparing the mid- year reports for your children which is supplemented by the regular learning updates. The reports will provide a synopsis of the learning over the past four months in English, Maths, Science, Health and P.E. Indonesian and the Arts. For parents who are new to our school student –led conferences are an important component of the Primary Years Programme. Children take the lead in these conferences sharing their learning journey with you over the past four months. The children will use the work in their portfolios from all subject areas to share with you during their appointment on the dates above. The children will bring home their portfolios during the holidays to enable a close examination of their work. PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE Premiers’ Reading Challenge has started for 2017. We hope parents will encourage their children to read as many books as possible. Children reading daily is one of the most effective ways to improve their overall academic development. Further information will be forwarded to parents and students.

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK We values student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by DET to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child’s schooling experience. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from our school in Years 4 to 6, will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. The survey results will be reported back to the school in term 3. Significant data from the survey is used to inform us in preparing next year’s Annual Implementation Plan. This year the survey will be conducted from 24th May to Friday 23rd June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during class time. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you require more information.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST-TERM 3 Dear Parents/carers, CHESS is to be introduced as an extra -curricular subject in the near future. If you would like your child to participate please complete the Expression of Interest from attached. We will be requesting $5.00 per lesson which will go towards the cost of the program and CHESS Master teaching the strategies and skills. This has not been formalised as yet so please advise either way if your child may be interested as places will be limited. ABSENCES When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or an email to the school email, [email protected] . It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! There are a few bugs around again and as winter approaches we can expect more. Our teachers also get sick from time to time and need time away. It is just as important that a teacher does not come to school sick, as it is for a child. Please explain to your child that this is part of life and the school will cover the grade internally or with a replacement teacher who will operate the teacher’s program. Thank you for your understanding. PLEASE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT We welcome open communication between our teaching staff and our school community. However, we would like to courteously remind parents/carers to make appointments for meetings with classroom teachers. It is respectfully requested that issues of serious concern are not addressed with our classroom teachers prior to school commencement or late after school. Instead any serious issues need to be directed to the Assistant Principal or Leading Teachers. Team Leaders are also available to assist as well. Foundation- Two Ms Luke and Grades 3-6- Mrs. Mendham. Our teachers need to be calm and focused on our students and their learning at the start of the school day. A meeting will be arranged for you with your child’s teacher, if necessary, at a more suitable time in a confidential setting. Thank you for your support. ENROLMENT PLACES FOR 2018 The demand for places at Glenroy West Primary School and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the school principal Pam Streete can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff with Anita or Rita.

EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

Kind regards, Have a wonderful week, Pamela Streete Principal.

Ramadan-Holy Islamic Month Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim Islamic calendar and is a religious annual practice, which involves one month of fasting. Ramadan is also known as the holy month and is one of the five pillars of Islam. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dusk until dawn. Ramadan offers a time for Muslims to purify their bodies, as well as their souls. It is a spiritual time and often they invite each other to one another’s homes to break their fast and pray together. This year Ramadan will commence on the 27th May and conclude on 24th June. Muslims fast for 29 days. The staff and students at Glenroy West Primary School would like to wish those who will be fasting during the month of Ramadan a “Ramadan Mubarak”. Thank you Pamela Streete & staff. WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from Year 4 to Year 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.

The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. No student can be identified in the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data. School may inform that the survey results will be communicated to parents through annual reporting or by some other means.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 22 May to Friday 23 June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information or visit the Department of Education and Training website:

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST -CHESS

Tuesday 30 May 2017

Dear Parents/carers,

On Wednesday 31st May, we will be conducting demonstration lessons for students interested in

playing CHESS.

We shall require an expression of interest from you if you would like your child to be involved in future

CHESS classes. Please indicate on the attached form your interest.

We are not sure if CHESS classes will be during school hours or after school. We shall inform you as soon

as we have all the information available.

There will be a small cost associated with CHESS classes, as we will need to pay for the professional

services of the CHESS Master. We envision this being around $5.00 per student, dependant on

numbers.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Pam Streete
