SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORT

Welcome back to term 3 another busy term at Rutherford Technology High.

POPSTARS Congratulations to all involved in a fantastic production. It is a testament to the fantastically talented students and staff at RTHS.

REPORTS Students in Years 7-11 received their reports on the last day of term 2. If students didn’t collect their reports they can do so at the front office.

PARENT TEACHER EVENING Thanks to all the parents who were able to attend the parent teacher evening on 20 July to receive feedback on stu-dent learning. Thank you to the teachers for giving up their time to enable this feedback to happen.

YEAR 12 Year 12 have just completed their HSC trial and many are now engaged in completing their major works and prepar-ing for major performances. It is important that Year 12 use all their time wisely for the rest of this term to maximise their HSC results.

MAJOR LEARNING INITIATIVES IN SEMESTER 2 There are 2 major focus areas this semester:

“Focus on writing” – across the school initiatives continuing from semester 1. “Assessment, feedback and reporting” –

the focus of our staff development day on 18 July

Investigating and reviewing how we can change assessment and feedback processes to enhance student learning.

N AWARDS AND N DETERMINATIONS We will be making decisions in the next few weeks about Year 11 and 12 students who have N determinations that affect their eligibility towards the HSC. It is imperative any students with outstanding N awards are making all en-deavours to rectify this.

EDUCATION WEEK- ‘SHARED STORIES, BETTER LEARNING, STRONGER COMMUNITIES’

Week 3 we are celebrating the great opportunities public education provides your children with our Rutherford Com-munity of Schools Education Week awards evening being held on Wednesday 3rd August from 5.30pm in the MPC.

EXECUTIVE REPORT

The first half of the year has flown by so quickly with everyone working so hard in English! Students in Years 7-10 have been working very well on their new units of work, with some outstanding classwork and assessment tasks being composed. It is also pleasing to see the number of students improving their skills through consistent effort and increasing completion of assessment tasks. Remember that all students were issued with a notice of the timing of the units being studied and the assessment due dates at the beginning of the year, so keeping track of this will help them to plan and incorporate preparation for these tasks into their regular study timetable. With a focus on develop-ing literacy skills, it is also important for students to be reading each day to help build these skills. Completing sum-maries and activities to improve comprehension should also be a part of students’ home reading program – we are more than happy to provide activities if needed – but sometimes a discussion of what has been read can be most helpful to students’ development. The Senior students have been working very hard as well, with Year 11 students adjusting to the demands of the Preliminary HSC course and Year 12 just finishing their Trial Exams. Year 11 should begin to prepare for their Year-ly Exams soon, as they will have a lot to study in the weeks leading up to these at the end of the term. The earlier they start, the easier all that revision will be. Year 12 are almost at the end of their HSC journey, but not quite yet! It is important to remember that a lot can be achieved between now and the HSC and that students must not only con-tinue their home study, but also attend class regularly in Term 3. There are still a lot of things Year 12 can learn and improve upon to ensure they achieve the results they desire in the HSC. Each lesson in English in Term 3 will be a necessary learning experience to develop essential knowledge and skills – don’t miss out on these! The courses are not over yet… We look forward to another exciting semester full of new and interesting learning experiences in English.

POPSTARS THE 90S MUSICAL A hard working and dedicated team of Staff and Students spent a semester of intensive rehearsals to put our Popstars musical together. From set construction, lighting design, choreography, direction, promotional design mate-rials and band rehearsals (till we heard the songs in our sleep), it was a lot of hard work but very rewarding. May I congratulate the leads, ensemble cast and band students, who gave up a semester of their school life to at-tend dance, drama and music activities in preparation for the show. For attending the nine weeks of Wednesday af-ternoon rehearsals, the two full day Sunday rehearsals, and the many recess and lunch breaks spent in Drama and Music to learn all the dances, scripts and blocking of scenes and all those songs in time with the band. Many thanks to all of the many wonderful staff who made Popstars possible by assisting with the show. From those who helped with the numerous daily rehearsals, the dedicated and amazing production team and to those who simp-ly came along to the performances to help out. The show could not have come together without the wonderful students who volunteered to be our amazing crew. The students worked on sound and lighting, front of house ushers, the incredible backstage audio technicians, stage managers and stage hands, backstage costume and props, and finally the hall designers. Throughout the show we worked with Hunter based sound and lighting company “Lifelike Atmospheres”. We must thank the owners Jacob Harwood and Trent Pickles for their expertise in the technical sound and lighting aspect and design for the show. Thank you to all our parents, family, friends and our wonderful Partnership Primary schools who all came along and supported our production of Popstars. TESTIMONIALS FROM STUDENTS

“I now dance all the time. This musical gave me confidence. There are times for silence and a time when a man must sing to save his buddies” – Tyson (Yr 10) “I really enjoyed my time in the musical. All the cast became a family and we loved going on stage together. I am incredibly proud of the entire talented cast” – Angel (Yr 10) “I have enjoyed the laughs and silly moments. We felt the pressure and were scared, but we held it together and pro-duced an awesome musical. As an ensemble member the other girls were kind and even went as far as helping me put my makeup on for the show. The musical has helped me make new friends and understand people at a new lev-el where I have opened up to new people by getting out of my comfort zone.” – Johanna (Yr 10) “Being in the musical was the best thing that has happened to me. Every time I showed up for rehearsals all I saw was happy faces. Thank you for letting me be part of the musical”. – Leteah (Yr 8) “I thought the musical was fun and very exciting. Every time I performed (in the band) it gave me more and more confidence and helped with my playing”. – Kyle (Yr 7) “The school musical showed me what it is like to have people really believe in me and make me feel like I can do anything”. – Caitlin (Yr 11) “Popstars was a fantastic experience, I loved working with ‘Lifelike Atmospheres’ and the lovely backstage crew. It was exciting to watch the actors so full of passion, the effort was outstanding. I loved the whole experience it is one I will treasure” – Ava (Yr 11) “The musical was the highlight of my year. I would do one again. It was filled with great students and teachers who feel like my second family” – Rhys (Yr 9) “I thought the musical was fun and great because it involved so many people regardless of their age and ability” – Rohan (Yr 7) “Being a part of the musical has by far been the best thing, I was happy to work with my close friend as part of the shows sound crew and do it amazingly well. The dances and the songs will be memories I will cherish forever”. – Jess (Yr 11)

Five tools to improve literacy have been explained in the past few Newsletters. These included Getting Knowledge Ready, Vocabulary, Reading the text aloud, Paraphrasing and What questions does the text answer? The sixth tool uses a combination of skills to help you understand the big picture.

6. SUMMARISING

WHAT IS IT? This is where you identify the main ideas of a text. This allows you to see the big ideas in texts, to link them together and compare them. It involves reducing the amount of text and bringing the key ideas together to restate the gist of the text as briefly as possible.

What’s in it for me?

This will help me to:

Highlight the main ideas in a text

Separate the main ideas from the supporting evidence and examples

Demonstrate my understanding of the text and ideas

Link knowledge across the text and to other previous knowledge

Compare information between texts

Condense large amounts of text

Remove unwanted detail from text

Improve my memory of what is read

ATTENDANCE UPDATE Last week our Assistant Year Advisers focused on student attendance. During the week they spoke with parents, and also met with students whose attendance currently requires improvement. The reasons for student absences were discussed, and strategies implemented to support students as they endeavour to improve their rate of attend-ance. Rutherford Technology High School acknowledges excellent student attendance each term with a student BBQ, and at the end of the year with an excursion, which is subsidised by the school in order to keep the cost as low as possi-ble for invited students. The attendance excursion this year will take place in Term 4 on Friday 25

th November. The venue for this years ex-

cursion is Tree Tops at Minmi. If you require any assistance with your child’s attendance, please contact the school on 49325999. Kristine Turner Head Teacher Wellbeing (Student Attendance)
