What IS Post-Secondary
Education?
• Optional level of schooling beyond what is required by law.
• University learning is one of the examples, but community colleges, vocational schools, and trade programs also qualify.
• By 2020, an estimated two-thirds of job openings will require postsecondary education or training.
Post-Secondary Education: Can’t I get a good job right after high school?

“For-Profit” Schools/Colleges-don’t receive money from the government to operate and are supported from tuition only. May have investors who want to make money.
-Do your research!•Credentials they offer tend to be 30 to 40 percent more expensive than the same credentials from a nonprofit public institution. (NPR.org)
•They tend to peg the tuition costs to the fully allowable amount that students are allowed to borrow from the federal student aid program. (NPR.org)

JUNIOR year grades are the most
important! They are the last grades most colleges will see on
your application!
When choosing a college, consider:
Size of the school:-Smaller colleges-more intimate classroom experience-Larger schools often have a wider variety of classes and activities. Where would you thrive?
●Location: urban, suburban, and rural colleges
-distance from home
When choosing a college, consider:Cost: State Schools, Private, community/branch--State schools: Akron, Bowling Green, Central State, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Kent State, Miami, OSU, OU, Shawnee State, Toledo, Wright State, Youngstown State
--Private colleges: Ashland, Capital, Case Western, Dayton, Denison, Marietta, ODC, Wooster, and many more!-may give a lot of financial aid to students who qualify, so the differences in cost may not be as great compared to state schools
--Community Branch: OSU/Newark, OU/Lancaster, Columbus State, and many more!
Cost Comparison
When choosing a college, consider:
Academics/Major-You don’t have to pick a major before you apply. Just make sure you pick a school with a wide range of degrees offered.-If you “know” your major, make sure the school offers it, and check out admissions requirements for that major.
Helpful Websites for Researching Schools
• Each school has a website, check it out!!• Follow the deadlines listed on the actual
school’s website, not on College Board, or any other site. Don’t miss a deadline!
• Check each school’s admission requirements on their web page.
Start to develop a list of schools you’re interested in based on:
• Info from the college fair
• Info from online research
• Taking into consideration: size, location, cost, and academics
• Also consider: do you meet admissions requirements?
• Save information in Backpack of Ohio Means Jobs
Visit the campus!
-Nothing can give you a better idea of campus life than visiting it in person.-Start to visit over the summer. Visit during the regular school year also!-If visiting during the school year, be sure to follow the school policy:
http://www.swl.k12.oh.us/CollegeInformation.aspx
College Testing: ACT/SAT
● Fee waivers are available. Check in the guidance office and have your counselor sign it. May only use 2 per ACT and 2 per SAT
Sending your ACT/SAT scores:-Many colleges REQUIRE OFFICIAL test scores be sent directly to them.
***WMHS includes ALL scores on your transcript unless you notify us IN WRITING to remove scores from specific test dates.
-Should you send your scores when you register? Consider: -Colleges say they take the highest score into consideration
-Do you know where you might apply yet? (or guess 4 colleges?)
-Is money a factor? (costs money to send them later)
ACT vs. SAT: Which should I take?
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/inside-the-test/compare-new-sat-act
(Keep in mind this site is from the makers of the SAT)
ACT• February-FREE here at WMHS during the school day• Students may want to take the ACT again in June/September/October 2020 depending on
their score in February. For those tests, register at www.actstudent.org• Must upload a picture for Saturday dates. Bring admission ticket AND acceptable photo ID
on test day. • Send scores to 4 places free if you request it WHEN YOU REGISTER for the test!• Costs $13 each at a later date (per test date and per college) to have scores sent.• Only the test day you select will be sent• Need ACT ID # from score report to register again or need to call ACT at 319-337-1270 to
have scores from WMHS test and other tests combined into one account.
• Take it “with writing” at least once (depending on your score) unless you are POSITIVE where you are attending and know they don’t require it (we will not offer the writing part here in February.)
• ACT offers students who completed the ACT on a national test date in December, April, or June the chance to order a copy of the test questions AND a list of the student's answers along with the correct answers. This can be a useful tool when trying to improve an ACT score. Students have five days after the test date to purchase a TIR online. This option is only available until the following Thursday at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
SAT-Must upload a picture. Bring admission ticket AND acceptable photo ID on test day.
-Send scores to 4 colleges free up to 9 days after test day
-$11.25 for additional scores (per test, per college)
-Select which score to send
-Take it “with writing” at least once (depending on your score) unless you are POSITIVE where you are attending and know they don’t require it
-Visit www. collegeboard.org for test dates

So How Do I Pay
For College?
•Apply for financial aid: Can apply beginning October of Senior year using tax information from previous year http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/#

Financial AidFAFSA: Need Based financial aid is
awarded according to a student’s, and
his or her family’s, ability to pay for their
educationEstimated Family Contribution (EFC) -the
estimated amount of money a family can
spend for one year of a student’s
