What is a Demonstration School?

Our Partnership with the University of Sydney

North Sydney Demonstration School is proud to have held this highly valued partnership with University Of Sydney for 38 years. The partnership is based on a reciprocal relationship which allows us to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

This partnership has significant benefits for our students and promotes a high level of ongoing professional development for our teaching staff. Some of the highlights of the partnership include:

• Staff mentoring a number of pre-service teachers from the University of Sydney to ensure that pre-service teachers are supported in continuing a high quality education for our students

• Staff engaging in Action Research in collaboration with University staff which has ensured that we continue to provide quality and innovative teaching and learning programs that are up-to-date with current teaching practice

• Staff presenting at the University of Sydney as guest lecturers and course tutors to help bridge the gap between theory and practice

• University staff providing professional development on current teaching pedagogy and effective mentoring strategies

For further information on the partnership, please refer to the school website.

Absences from school The law in NSW states that all children between the ages of six and seventeen years of age are required to attend school regularly. It is the responsibility of parents and caregivers to give an explanation for any student absences. We have several ways you may notify the school:

For short absences Phone call to the office on Ph: 9955 2822 A note delivered to the teacher on return to school.

Email to the office [email protected] or your individual teacher.

For longer absences Prior to the absence - notify the school using one of the methods above. An Application for extended leave form may be required.

If you have a family emergency that requires your child to be out of school for an extended period, or your child will be employed in the entertainment industry (for any amount of time) or is selected for an elite sport event that requires absence from school the Principal may grant an Exemption from attendance at school. Application forms are available at the office. If this is approved you will be issued with a certificate that you should carry with you and present if requested by the police or an attendance officer.

Extended leave for family holidays requires an Application for extended leave form, this is also available at the office. The request is assessed by the Principal, who may give approval. The days away from school will be recorded as Leave on your child’s school record and report.

Please ensure any notes and emails have the full name and class of the student. All notes are filed and kept for examination and monitoring by the home-school liaison officer. Any phone calls to the office are noted. Accidents, illness and first aid The office staff have first aid training, but are not medical staff. If your child is unwell before school please do not send them to school. Please let the school office know if your child is suffering from an infectious disease or condition such as: head lice, chicken pox, whooping cough, impetigo, conjunctivitis and hand, foot and mouth disease. Some of these conditions do have mandatory exclusion from school attendance periods. The school office or your family doctor can inform you how long your child should be kept away from school.

Children who become ill during the day will be sent to the office by their class teacher. We will call you to collect your child. Please sign them out in the ‘Early Departures Book’ at the office. Be sure to keep your contact details up to date with the school so that we can be in touch with you quickly if necessary.

Small incidents of first aid are dealt with by classroom or playground teachers and the office staff. In the case of a medical emergency an ambulance will be called and you will be contacted.

Accounts You will be mailed a schedule of payment (account) for each term. This includes a request from the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) for an annual donation per family and a General School Contribution towards student learning programs. These two payments are voluntary and can be paid by instalments. The cost of other activities such as excursions, camps, textbooks and visiting performers are kept to a minimum. These are costed on the projected number of students attending and therefore no refunds can be made if a student does not attend after payment is made. We ask parents to pay their account promptly so that payments can be made to suppliers.

Some groups your child may join, such as the choirs, the bands, the performance group or a sports team may have a compulsory fee and if it is not paid your child cannot take part.

Please notify the principal confidentially of any difficulties in paying school costs. There are provisions for subsidising some students and making payments by instalments. Please include in your letter to the principal a short statement about the employment status of the family, the number of children under 18 and any special circumstances.

Payments may be made at the office by EFTPOS, cheque or cash, or online through the website. Any overpayments will be applied to outstanding amounts on your schedule. Refunds will be made by cheque at the end of the term.

Parent Online Payments (POP) – These are online payments via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. Most families are now using this way to make payments.

To use this facility you must have an email address. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school website www.nthsyddem-p.schools.nsw.edu.au by selecting ‘$ Make a payment’.

When you access ‘Make Online Payments’ you must complete all mandatory fields including your child’s class. Please itemise activities for each child. You must complete a new Online Payment for each sibling.

Please print out a receipt as confirmation that you have made a payment as we do not print receipts for POP at the school. Please make sure you pay the correct amount. Call the office during office hours to check if you are unsure. Any money from incorrect payments will be applied to outstanding amounts on your schedule.

Some suggestions for using online payments: We are finding many families appreciate the convenience of paying online from home. We suggest you decide on one person who will do all payments to reduce the risk of double payments. A manilla folder to hold the Schedule of Payment from us and printed receipts as you make your payments allows you to check what has been paid for.

Cash payments - If you are paying in cash and change is required it will be given to your child with the receipt within a couple of days. The office never has change on hand to give over the counter. Please make sure any payment sent with your child is securely packed and clearly labeled with your child’s name, class and the purpose.

Tax deductible donations may be made to the Library Fund.

After School Pick-up School finishes at 2.55pm. Please ensure your child knows where you will collect him/her after school. The school day is long and tiring enough without students worrying about who is collecting them and where they have to be. If you will be unavoidably delayed and late for the pick-up please ring the school office as early as possible so that we can find your child before the worry starts and put a collection plan in place. Parents will be called if children are not collected on time. Uncollected children wait in the foyer outside the office. After-school Care Children from this school mostly attend either Demkids Care (Demcare) Ph: 9956 8087 [email protected] North Sydney Council Leisure Centre Ph: 9922 2299 [email protected]

Demcare is run by Kindergarten Union (KU), a not-for-profit organization, which also runs very highly regarded pre-schools. The centre is situated in the school grounds and cares for children K - 6 before school from 7.30 am and K – 2 after school until 6.00 pm. Some Kindergarten children gather at Demcare and then are moved by bus to the KU Grandstand Pre-school to be cared for in a safe and age appropriate centre. Parents collect them from there. Some Kindergarten children stay onsite at school. Years 1 and 2 stay on the school grounds. The Leisure Centre is nearby in Miller Street behind the Stanton Library with opening hours 3.00 – 6.00 pm. Leaders from Leisure collect the children from the school and escort them to the centre, which is about 5 minutes walk away. Families with children who might otherwise be split between these two centres send all children to Leisure.

Parents must make their own arrangements with these centres. Allergies The Department of Education and Communities has developed extensive guidelines to assist the school staff to support students at risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). It is the responsibility of parents to notify the school that their child is at risk of an allergic reaction. This notification should occur either at the time of enrolment, or, if the student is already enrolled, as soon after diagnosis as possible. Parents will meet with the Principal to discuss their child’s situation and confirm medical plans. An ASCIA action plan and any medication (eg. Epipen) must be supplied by the parents. A copy of the Department’s Anaphylaxis: guidelines for schools is available to read at the office. An Individual Health Care Plan will be developed by the school and parents for every child with a severe allergy or other severe medical condition.

We have a number of students with serious allergies to eggs, cow’s milk, latex, fruits such as kiwifruit and strawberries, and all varieties of nuts and therefore no nut products are sold from our tuckshop. All students, staff and visitors are asked to respect our efforts to provide a safe learning environment for these children.

Due to these allergies, we teach children not to share food from their lunchboxes. Please reinforce to your child why they have to be careful about food sharing. Appointments during School Time Sometimes it is necessary to have an appointment (medical, dental, etc.) during school time, please send a note to the teacher. You must sign them out in the ‘Early Departure Book’ at the office, fill out an Early Departure Slip and give it to the teacher when you collect your child. Please describe what sort of appointment the child is attending. The child must not leave the school grounds during school hours on their own, for any reason. On return the student will go straight to class and the classroom teacher will record the time. Children may not meet you outside the school grounds, as this would be in contravention of the school’s duty of care.

Assemblies Assembly points:

On arrival at school children should place their bag in their class area and wait for the bell.

Classes assemble in the following areas: Monday mornings 8.55 Whole school assembly under the shade sails

near Pacific Building

Other days Kindergarten Northern end of Pacific Playground near the demountable classroom Yr 1 Southern end of Pacific Playground Yr 2 Centre of Pacific Playground next to Pacific Building Yr 3 Pacific Playground in front of McHatton steps Yr 4 McHatton Playground near the big equipment Yr 5 McHatton Playground near the demountables Yr 6 McHatton Playground near the demountables

It is important that students arrive on time for school, as messages and news of the day’s events are given out at these assemblies. Children who regularly miss this information are at a disadvantage and cause disruption to their class.

If it is raining students go straight to their classroom.

Assemblies: The school has separate assemblies in the school hall each week for K- Yr2 and Yrs 3-6. These are formal assemblies with the National Anthem and school song. A class or the school leaders may lead the assembly or present an item. If your child’s class is performing you may be invited to come and watch. Your class teacher will give you more information about the day and time.

Bands The Band Program provides children with the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and play in an ensemble. Children may join the Training Band when they are in Year 3 or above. The Band Program has three Concert Bands and offers musical tuition in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. The band represents the school at music festivals and community events, as well as school functions and assemblies.

There is an extensive private tutorial program for band members, which operates at the school before and after class hours.

The bands rehearse before school each week and have an overnight band camp each year.

The Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) provides financial support for the administration of the band and the purchase of new instruments. Parents pay for instrument hire and lessons and band fees.

Enquiries about the band program can be made to the school office. Bell Times 8.55 Classes begin 10.55 Recess (morning tea break)

11.15 Classes recommence 12.35 Lunch - children sit and are supervised while they eat their lunch 12.45 End of supervised session 1.05 Second half of lunch (children may play and visit the library) 1.30 Classes recommence 2.55 End of day

Playground supervision: Students must not arrive or stay in the school unattended before 8.25am unless they are attending Demcare. The playgrounds are supervised by a roving member of staff from 8.25am. Before school children may not play on the equipment or use big balls. After school it is expected that children will be collected promptly at 2.55pm or attend after-school care. Children in the care of their parents or carers may play on the equipment. The notes under the heading Stay and Play explain our after school play system. The parents of any uncollected or unaccompanied child will be contacted.

Birthdays We are always delighted to join in birthday celebrations. If you would like to send something to school for your child’s birthday please send cupcakes or something already divided into pieces for all the members of the class (teachers like cake too!) Please remember that a number of children are anaphylactic to nuts, eggs, strawberries, kiwifruit,

etc. Please never provide food to another person’s child without checking with the teacher or parent. Bus and Train Passes (now School Opal card 2016) All children in K-2 (not available to some children on temporary visas) are eligible for free travel to and from school. Children in Years 3-6 qualify for free transport if they live outside the circle shown on the map (see back of this booklet). The circle indicates 1.6 kilometres from the school. Children who live within the circle and would like to use public transport may use a child Opalcard or paper ticket or apply for a term ticket ($52.00 per term, 2016) online at the address below.

For children eligible for free travel parents must apply online at: transportnsw.info/school-students

Print, sign and date the completed application, then submit it to the school office for endorsement. The school then sends the endorsed application to Transport for NSW. Once approved, the School Opal card will be sent to the address provided on the application. Bus Routes Please see the bus list (at the back of this booklet) for routes that service North Sydney Demonstration School. Some of these buses are School Specials and only school children may use them, some are normal public services. Change of Contact Details Please notify the school office as soon as possible of any change to work or home phone numbers, mobile phone numbers, access arrangements or addresses. We need your current details in case of emergency or illness. Choirs Presently we have a K-2 choir, Junior Choir (Yrs 3 & 4) and Senior Choir (Yrs 5 & 6). Students are welcome to join these choirs which meet during school time. As well as singing just for the pleasure of it, the choirs have had opportunities to perform at the Opera House and for other local and school occasions. There are some fees to cover hire of buses and other costs. All classes spend some class time in singing. Clubs Clubs form from time to time according to need and interest. Speak to your child’s class teacher for more specific details. At present we have a weekly Chess Club, a Drama Club and a Gardening Club.

Communication between Parents/Carers and Teachers Communication is the key ingredient to a successful partnership between the home and the school. If you have a concern or would like to bring something to the teacher’s attention, please let us know. The following steps will help all parties involved.

1. An informal chat for minor issues may be suitable, however it is important to remember that teachers have meetings, duties and class preparation, and therefore may have limited time to discuss the issue. If you wish to arrange an appointment with the classroom teacher, the best form of contact is through email directly to the teacher. It is important to state the nature of the concern and a few possible meeting times and dates.

2. If you feel further discussions are needed, you should contact the class teacher’s team leader. If ongoing action or discussions are required the Deputy Principal and finally the Principal will provide support.

School website The school website www.nthsyddem-p.schools.nsw.edu.au should be your first source for information about the school. We will do our best to keep it up-to-date and accurate. Please check the website first for last minute cancelations and postponements before calling the school office, eg wet weather affecting school functions. It also contains information about enrolment, learning programs, permission notes for excursions, online payments, the Parents and Citizens Association, the University partnership and the school calendar. Notes home Please check your child’s school bag regularly for notes sent home. Some of these will be about excursions and will require you to fill out any health concerns and sign to give your permission for your child to attend. Some will be about health matters, for example that a student in your child’s class has had headlice – and you are asked to check your own child’s head to prevent further outbreaks. Some will be about meetings or working bees you may wish to attend. The Dem – our weekly newsletter The weekly newsletter The Dem has many notices of upcoming events. We ask that as many families as possible visit our website to read the Dem newsletter each week. Parents can register their email details on the front page of our website to receive notification when the Dem newsletter has been published. It is usually published on Fridays. Note to the teacher You may wish to write a note to the teacher if some issue is causing you concern. We prefer to hear about worries while they are small and more easily solved. Please let the teacher know of major events or changes to routine from home that may affect your child’s behaviour and learning at school, for instance: continuous interruptions to sleep because of illness, parents separating or divorcing, death of a pet, mother returning to work, parent working overseas. We love to hear about good news too! All information will be dealt with in confidence.

Mid-year interviews All parents are invited to make a time to have an interview with the class teacher to discuss their child’s progress half way through the year. School reports A school report is sent home twice a year (mid-year and end of year). This report shows how much your child has achieved during the semester and the contribution they have made to the school. Please store these reports in a safe place, as you may need to refer to them again in the future or produce them for a subsequent school. If your child requires a second copy for another parent, please notify your teacher. Requests for replacement copies for lost reports attract a small copying fee. Counsellor School counsellors are trained teachers who have also undertaken counsellor training. Our school has a school counsellor in attendance on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classroom teachers may refer a student to the counsellor. Parents may ask to make an appointment with the counsellor to talk about matters which affect their child at school. The counsellor liaises closely with the Learning Support Committee. Custody Arrangements Please notify the school of custody arrangements so we know which parent to contact for permission notes, school accounts, supplies and equipment, homework, sick children and pick up details. This assists us in our communication. The school should be given a copy of any court orders. Emergency procedures In an emergency the school will either evacuate (eg for fire) or lock-down (for threat on the premises). In the event of an evacuation the children will be walked by their teachers to Mater Gardens, near the Mater Hospital or the Australian Catholic University in Edward Street. For a lock-down, teachers place their class quietly on the floor away from windows and lock and cover all windows and doors. For either procedure we have measures in place to allow staff to communicate with each other. Each term a practice will take place for either an emergency evacuation or lock-down of the school. Teachers will begin at the start of the year with gentle explanations of why and how we carry out these procedures, by the end of the year we attempt to conduct an unexpected emergency drill. Excursions All classes take part in excursions which are planned to enhance the teaching and learning in individual grades. A permission note will be sent home for every occasion where a student will leave the school grounds (apart from short walking excursions). Please fill out and

8

Page 12: School Information Booklet · 2019-11-01 · 2016 . School Information Booklet . Welcome ... school. Please keep this booklet in a safe place so that it can be referred to as necessary

return this note as soon as possible and send the appropriate payment or make sure your schedule of payment is up to date.

Students without permission, or who have not paid, are not able to attend excursions. Several days before an excursion a Non-participation note will be sent home with children who will not be able to attend. If you would like your child to attend, quickly send in your permission note and make sure the payment is made. These excursions are costed on the basis of the number of students attending, therefore no refunds can be given if a child does not attend after payment is made.

A risk assessment is completed by the teacher prior to each individual excursion and parents are asked to provide any medical and/or dietary information that will affect their child’s involvement in the outing. Extra-curricular Activities A variety of after-school activities – drama, dance, martial arts and music tuition are available, however days and times change from year to year. These are usually advertised in the weekly newsletter, The Dem. Please see the office for specific details. Gifted and talented students To challenge and extend the learning of Gifted and Talented students we provide a variety of opportunities both within the student's classrooms and across their school experience to support their intellectual, academic, emotional and social needs.

We identify our Gifted and Talented students using a combination of subjective and objective testing. All parents/caregivers and teachers will have the opportunity to complete a nomination form if they feel a child demonstrates the characteristics of giftedness. These nomination forms will be reviewed by the Gifted and Talented committee who also liaise with the Learning Support Team and School Counsellor.

Identified students are closely tracked and monitored by the Gifted and Talented Committee during their time with us to ensure smooth transitions as they progress through their school years. Students will be placed with teachers who have undertaken training in Gifted and Talented Education and are able to provide an appropriate learning program. Outside of the classroom, we are also able to provide a rich and wide-ranging program of enrichment opportunities in the areas of creative arts, technology and sport. Holidays in term time Department of Education policy has changed in recently regarding holidays in term time, these days will appear as leave on your child’s report. Exemption from Attendance at School will not be granted for family holidays. Teachers will not supply work to complete while your child is absent, you must make your own arrangements.

Homework Homework varies from year to year. In Kindergarten, for example, students will do some home reading, this involves bringing home a school reader and reading aloud to a family member each night. Year 1 students will have home reading and some spelling. Your child’s teacher will notify you about a particular grade’s homework program. At the beginning of the year all teachers have a parent information session to discuss areas such as homework expectations. Houses The school has four house groups for sport and merit awards.

Berry – Colour: Blue Named after Alexander Berry, a pioneering merchant who had interests in the Shoalhaven and North Sydney districts, and who, from 1832 to 1873 owned the land on which the school stands.

Hay – Colour: Green A reminder of Lady Hay (wife of Alexander Berry’s cousin, Sir John Hay), who lived on the site of the present school from 1889 to 1931. The school was originally called The Lady Hay School.

Milson – Colour: Yellow James Milson was granted land on the North Shore in 1804 on the point which bears his name. He was a ship’s provider, owner of sheep and cattle stations and one of the pioneers of yachting on the harbour.

Whitton – Colour: Red John Whitton, Engineer-in-Chief, NSW Railways, 1851-89, lived in McLaren Street. Called ”Father of NSW Railways”, he built the Zig-Zag railway in the Blue Mountains. Late Arrival and Early Departure As part of our attendance and evacuation procedures all students who arrive late or leave early must be recorded on the school attendance system. This information becomes part of your child’s formal school record. These records are periodically examined and monitored by the home-school liaison officer.

Any arrival after 8.55am is late. Parents should take their child to class and the teacher will adjust the on-line roll with the time of arrival. Important messages and learning occur at the beginning of the school day, so it is essential that students arrive on time to school.

If you are collecting your child for an appointment or to leave the school before home time please go to the office first, sign them out in the Early Departure book and take an early departure slip to give the teacher. Please note the type of appointment your child is attending.

Library The school library is open during the second half of lunch Monday to Friday for reading and quiet activities. All classes have a formal library lesson each week and may borrow books for home and classroom reading. The library is usually open until 3.15pm after school for parents to visit and borrow with their children.

Throughout the year the teacher-librarian will advise students about reading related activities like the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Parents can assist by: - ensuring children have a library bag - ensuring all books are returned or by paying for lost books - helping in the library with jobs such as book covering - donating books – a gesture which is always appreciated - enrolling children in the local municipal library

Lost Property Lost property is collected and taken to the corridor near the Uniform Shop. Parents are welcome to search for items before and after school. Labelled items are taken out and returned to the student’s class tray. Unlabelled items are donated to charity or the uniform shop.

Please label all clothing and other items, eg. lunchboxes, that come to school. You would be amazed at how much children can misplace. A thick black permanent marker is good for naming things. Money at School Being responsible for some money and shopping at the tuckshop is an important part of your child’s growth towards independence, however large sums of money are not suitable for school. Please do not send more than $5.00. Out of Area Enrolment Applications Our school, along with many surrounding schools, is experiencing an increase in IN AREA enrolments. At this time we are not able to offer a place at the school to students who do not live in our catchment area, or already have a sibling attending the school. Parents are able to lodge with us an OUT OF AREA APPLICATION FOR ENROLMENT. All applications will be considered by the Out of Area Committee, but we recommend that you enrol your child at your local school. Overseas Students All Australian citizens and permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens who live within our catchment may enrol at our school (the map is on our website).

Temporary visa holders may enrol subject to approval from the DET International Business Unit. Fees may be payable to the Unit before enrolment can proceed. The school can advise the appropriate action on production of passports and visas.

International students (Visa TU 571P) have different requirements that must be met. Please ask at the school office. Parent Helpers Teachers welcome helpers in the classroom and on excursions. Parent helpers can assist by listening to children reading home readers, help with maths sessions, cooking sessions, craft sessions, music and other tasks like covering books and sharpening pencils. Please offer whatever time and talents you have.

Visitors and helpers must sign in and out at the office in the Visitor’s Book and wear a visitor’s badge. Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) Our school has a dedicated and active P&C committee. The members organize many social and fundraising activities during the year. These include the Welcome BBQ, the End of Year BBQ, a multicultural evening, a trivia night, an art auction and various raffles. They are active within the school, and support the school in many ways. Each family is asked to make an annual voluntary contribution which will be on your Schedule of Payments. All money raised by the P&C is spent on the school to provide extra books, teacher time, playground equipment and other school resources.

All parents are welcome to attend P&C meetings which are held once a month and advertised in The Dem newsletter. Parking There is very little parking available near the school, and the surrounding streets are vigilantly patrolled by North Sydney Council rangers. We encourage parents to acquaint themselves with the parking restrictions and times, and be careful about obeying them. Only parents attending class excursions will be issued a parking permit to use the staff carpark. No other parents may drive into the carpark, this is to keep the school grounds safe for walking children. Where possible please walk your children to school. Performance Group Each year (occasionally every second year) students from Years K-6 are invited to join a performance group and prepare for a school production. This requires students to commit to rehearsals and preparation over the year. Parent support, e.g. in costume making, is imperative for the success of these productions and is greatly appreciated. There is a student participation fee to cover the cost of costumes. Parents are able to purchase tickets to attend the final performance.

School reports A school report is sent home twice a year (mid-year and end of year). This report shows your child’s achievement during the semester and the contribution they have made to the school. Please store these reports in a safe place, you may need to refer to them again in the future or produce them for a subsequent school. If your child requires a second copy for another parent, please notify your teacher. Requests for duplicates for lost copies attract a small fee. School Security and Safety We ask parent helpers and visitors to the school to sign themselves in and out in our visitor’s book and wear a visitor’s badge as part of our Child Protection procedure. School gates are locked between 9.30am and 2.30pm and entrance must be made through the gates near the office in McHatton Street.

The school has very limited parking available for staff and visitors. Parents who are helping with excursions may ask at the office for a parking permit to use the staff carpark. The carpark is regularly checked by school staff for unauthorized parking.

The vicinity of the school is a 40 kph zone before and after school. Please drive and park safely to protect our students who may not always be paying attention to the traffic. Please also observe all No Stopping signs, especially near our pedestrian crossing on Bay Road. School Song and National Anthem

School Motto Towards the highest.

Towards the highest One step’s the first step To scale the mountain One note is all it takes To start the masterpiece One word begins the book You only have to write it Just believe in you You’ve got what it takes So let’s share our dreams together And take one step at a time We can touch the stars forever So let’s reach towards the highest.

Special Health Plans and Medication Children with serious medical issues should have a special health plan (eg. ASCIA anaphylaxis plan or diabetes plan) prepared by their doctor. Copies of these will be displayed at key points in the school so that all staff can be made aware of the procedures that need to be followed in case of a medical alert.

All students with diagnosed asthma require an asthma plan from their doctor.

If any medication must be given at school, either short-term or long-term, please fill out a Medication Authority Form at the office. Medication must be labelled and supplied in original packaging. The medication will be administered by the office staff. Teachers are not permitted to administer medication. Special Religious Education (SRE) (Scripture) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) Public schools are required to allow time each week for children to receive religious instruction if their parents wish it.

SRE classes are offered one lesson per week by local religious groups. These groups are responsible for the content that is taught during the class. A class teacher will be in the classroom for supervision only. Children not attending SRE are supervised in groups by a classroom teacher and take part in quiet activities.

At the moment we offer Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, and Baha’i classes. Ethics classes are offered to Years 3-6.

14

The following short descriptions have been supplied by each group.

Bahá’í These classes aim to contribute to the awakening and development of the spiritual nature of every child who attends. They are based on the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith. The teachings emphasise the unity of religions and the diversity of the human family as well as such principles as the oneness of humankind, equality of men and women, importance of education for all and the harmony of science and religion. Classroom activities encourage the understanding and use of universal moral values or virtues and the development of those unique qualities of each individual so that they in turn will have strong self-esteem and compassion for others. Children in the classes learn through prayer and meditation, music and song, games, craft, role play and stories, brainstorming, discussion and cooperative learning.

Ethics Ethics is a branch of Philosophy that examines ethical concepts and issues. Ethics teaches children how to approach issues while developing their capacity for moral reasoning. By considering a wide range of ethical scenarios appropriate to their particular level of development, children will learn skills such as collaborative inquiry, logical reasoning, critical thinking and the capacity to evaluate good and bad moral reasoning. By learning to think about ethical matters together and through the give-and-take of reasoned argument, students will learn properly to consider other people’s points of view and to be sincere, reasonable and respectful in dealing with their differences and disagreements.

Hindu Hindu SRE classes aim to introduce the children to the basics of Hindu culture and sow the seeds of good thoughts and good actions in them.

Each week in class, the students will begin with meditation and chanting slokas. The children will learn of the significance of festivals such as Navratri, Dushhera and Diwali. We will look at the stories behind these festivals and we talk about the characters in Ramayan and the morals that can be learned from each character. The students also enjoy discussing the positive lessons that can be learned from moral stories. Jewish Students are encouraged to feel positive about being Jewish and to identify with the Jewish community. They learn about Jewish holidays, values, synagogue basics and Israel; older children also explore ethical aspects of Judaism and explore some areas of Jewish history. Basic Jewish prayers are incorporated into each lesson. Where possible, lessons are also enriched with activities such as demonstration Sedarim for Pesach (Passover), hands-on experiences, craft activities, guest presenters and visits from Jewish youth groups.

Protestant Protestant Scripture refers to the non-Catholic Christian denominations such as Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Uniting Church.

Sensitive to the diversity in each class and appropriately trained in loving communication and child protection, our scripture teachers aim to help the children engage with the Bible and understand the basics of the Christian faith, in an age appropriate way.

We use a curriculum called Connect, published by Christian Education Publishers. Particular focus is given to Easter and Christmas each year, where we usually combine with Catholic classes in an assembly, with some classes presenting items. Roman Catholic Welcome from the Parishes of Our Lady of the Way; North Sydney, Lavender Bay and Kirribilli! What happens in Catholic Scripture?

We have a dedicated team of Parish volunteers, including some Dem parents. Our Scripture teachers use curriculum materials produced by the Archdiocese of Sydney. At the core of the curriculum is our belief in the dynamic presence of our loving, forgiving God, who invites us into relationship. The sessions involve sharing our faith with music, drama, stories, discussion, art and craft activities. We pray in different ways to help the students develop their personal relationship with God and find a way of prayer which best suits them. We aim to develop the key Christian values of respect, understanding and love of God and all God's creation.

At the Dem we hold a combined assembly with the Anglican scripture teachers and students for both Easter and Christmas. We also invite Catholic scripture students to participate in a special prayer service with readings and music, held in the school hall and presided at by one of the Jesuit priests of our parish. We have a class mass towards the end of the year for upper primary students. Sport All classes have regular lessons of sport and physical activity as part of the key learning area of Personal Development/Health/Physical Education (PDHPE). All children are assigned to a school house group. We have four houses: Milson (yellow), Hay (green), Whitton (red) and Berry (blue).

• Yrs 3-6 (and Yr 2 students turning 8) have the opportunity to take part in our annual swimming carnival near the beginning of the year.

• K-6 take part in our athletics carnival in the middle of the year. • Yrs 3-6 (and Yr 2 students turning 8) take part in our cross-country running race. • High achievers at the local level may progress on to zone, area and state levels. • Yrs 3-6 take part in sport on Friday afternoons and may leave the school to play a

variety of sports, competing against other local public schools. • Towards the end of the year children in Yrs 2-6 who are unable to swim may take

part in the ‘Learn-to-swim’ program at a local pool during school time.

Stay and play At 2.55pm the North Sydney Demonstration School playground often becomes a community hub where parents can meet and chat while supervising their children. These gatherings are not the norm in most public or private schools but are greatly valued within our community. To continue this tradition staff, parents and students need to work together to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times.

Stay and Play is an after school procedure that allows for staff to ensure that all children have safely left the school grounds by 3.15pm or are under the care of an authorised supervisor. Children are able to stay and play in the school grounds after 2.55pm provided that they are fully supervised by their parent or an agreed carer. Stay and play wristbands are given out to carers to put on the children they are supervising. Between 2.55 and 3.15 unsupervised children are easily identified by staff because they will not be wearing a Stay and Play wrist band. These children are required to wait at the school office while their parents are phoned. If parents are unavoidably detained we ask that the school be notified and alternative care arrangements be made. Student Welfare At the Dem we seek to provide quality education for all students taking into account background, ability and interests. Our aim is to engage students in self directed lifelong learning to enable them to participate effectively in society.

We provide a happy, safe and caring learning environment to meet the needs of our students. Within our student welfare program we have established clear guidelines for teachers to follow for classroom and playground behaviour management. Early intervention when problems arise for students is critical and as a result, we have support and social skills programs in place to ensure that all students can realise their potential. We embrace strong communication between home and school and we provide opportunities for students, staff and parents to discuss learning programs and student behaviour issues to develop a joint understanding of expectations and goals.

Our aim is for students to participate in decisions about their own learning which meet their needs and for them to develop skills for positive, socially responsible participation in school life and the programs we have to offer. Terminating Enrolment Please notify the school office in writing if your child will be moving to another school or leaving the country.

Students who are transferring to another New South Wales public school should notify us of their new school and school records will be forwarded on. We do not forward any school records for students moving overseas or going to a private school. For students moving to another state the new school can apply to us by an Interstate Student Data Transfer Note and we will forward the requested information.

17

Parents should keep their own records of school reports (a copying fee will apply to lost reports) and competition results (we cannot replace these). Travel to and from School Car: Most of our students arrive at school by car. We ask all parents to be particularly careful when delivering their children to school to obey all parking and ‘No Stopping’ signs and watch out for the safety of our students. Parking inspectors regularly patrol the streets around the school and enforce parking restrictions. North Sydney Council supports the school in spreading a strong road safety message. Parents are reminded to always stop on the school side of the street (facing in the correct direction) so that children do not need to cross the road. Please do not double park or block the driveways of our neighbours. Where possible please consider one of the following methods for getting your child to school. Buses: School specials. These are dedicated school buses 677 McMahons Point to the school. 669 Wollstonecraft Station to the school. 667 Milsons Point to the school

General buses: 265 from Lane Cove shops via Wollstonecraft and Waverton stations operates a special deviation in the morning to drop off at the school and proceeds to McMahons Point.

Buses along the Pacific Highway drop off near the school. See the bus timetable page for times. Train: Our closest stations are North Sydney and Waverton. Both are in healthy walking distance or Pacific Highway buses can be used from North Sydney.

K – Yr 2 students are entitled to free travel to and from school on public transport (sorry, not available for some Temporary Visa holders). Apply for a pass at the office. Older children may qualify for free travel if they live more than 1.6 kilometres from the school. Children who live closer, but would like to travel by public transport may purchase a term ticket. Enquire at the school office. Tuckshop The school tuckshop is run by the Parents and Citizens Association. Volunteers to help in the tuckshop are always welcome. The tuckshop is open at recess and lunch-time and after school on Fridays. Lunches may be ordered every day. Orders can be placed online by: 1 Go to www.munchmonitor.com 2 Enter username/password (nsds/munch2060)

Uniform The 2014 Term 2 School Uniform Survey showed overwhelming support by the parents for the wearing of full uniform by students. In response to these survey results the school has committed to putting the following procedures and responses in place;

Random uniform checks Executive teachers will conduct random uniform checks at morning lines. Friendly Reminders Students not wearing the correct uniform will receive a friendly reminder. Formal Recording After the third friendly reminder the incident will be noted on the schools reporting system. Yearly Report Card After two notations on the school reporting system the following will appear on the students formal School Report Consistently adheres to the school’s uniform code: NO

The following items will be the focus of any friendly uniform reminders or recordings • The wearing of leggings (please wear stockings or trousers) • The wearing of socks that are not the school royal blue or white • The wearing of jumpers and jackets that are not the school royal blue in colour • The wearing of hats that are not the school royal blue in colour • The wearing of shoes that are not black • The wearing of the summer tunic during the winter terms (Terms Two and Three)

All students must wear black school shoes or black joggers to school (no fluorescent laces or stripes). Black joggers can be purchased cheaply in many locations. This rule will apply to Year 6 as well unless they can provide evidence that the high school that they are attending does not require black shoes as part of their uniform requirement e.g. Mosman High School. Any families experiencing financial difficulty can apply for assistance with the cost of their child’s uniform directly and confidentially to the Principal at [email protected]

Lost Property

Occasionally children drop their clothes, hats and lunchboxes etc. These items are then taken to lost property, which is located at the entry to the uniform shop. Volunteers sometimes sort through these items and if clearly labelled, your things may be returned to your child’s class. It is always a good idea to check lost property a couple of times as things sometimes go home accidently with the wrong child. To ensure they are returned to you, please label all items clearly with your child’s name and class. One way to label your clothes, lunch boxes etc is to order Bright Star Kids Labels. Bright Star Kids generously donate 15% of all purchases to the school P&C. This com-pany supplies superior labels at a competitive price. Just log on to www.BrightStarKids.com.au and enter the code: FDR574 ‘North Sydney Demonstration School’ into the Fundraising Code section on the website.
