    School forLegal Practice

    LEAD understands the needs o a modern-day law practice. A variety o methods to access high-quality learning

    activities are oered to attorneys, candidate attorneys, students and support sta at law frms. These include a

    practical law school and a range o courses, seminars and workshops conducted at training centres or online.

    What is theSchool forLegal Practice?Ater a student obtains an LLB degree rom a South

    Arican university, one o the main requirements or

    admission as an attorney is two years of service

    under a contract o articles o clerkship with a South

    Arican frm o attorneys or two years recognised

    community service. I the prospective attorney

    attends a ull-time practical law school, the

    two years service are reduced to one year.

    The School for Legal Practice, established by the

    Law Society o South Arica in 1990, is such a prac-

    tical law school. It oers an intensive, postgraduate

    vocational course at one o the Schools 10 centres

    situated around the country.

    In addition to the reduction in articles, a studentwho attends the School or Legal Practice can sit or

    the Attorneys Admission Examination. This is in

    terms o the Attorneys Act as amended.

    OBJECTIVE OF THE SCHOOL

    The objective is to provide law graduates with the

    opportunity to acquire and develop practical legal

    skills to become eective practitioners.

    DURATION OF THE COURSE

    The ull-time course takes six months to complete

    all together. The distance learning course runs romJanuary to December each year.

    INTAKE OF STUDENTS

    Depending on the centre, the course may be oered

    once or twice a year. Some centres oer the course

    during the day and ater-hours and some on either

    basis. The ater-hours course is called the night

    school and it accommodates candidate attorneys

    who are serving articles during the day. A distance

    learning School is oered jointly with the University

    o South Arica (UNISA).

    NATURE OF STUDY

    The course is structured into four study modules.

    Training is practice-orientated to ensure that can-

    didates will be able to perorm most tasks with

    minimal supervision once they have completed the

    course. Students are taught in a practical context

    in a simulated law frm environment. Students are

    divided into law frms with each frm having an o-

    fce and access to computers and a law library.Moot courts and practical work orm the ounda-

    tion o the training activities, preceded by, inter alia,

    learners exchanging pleadings and drating the nec-

    essary documents in application proceedings.

    INSTRUCTORS

    The instructors are legal practitioners known or

    their experience and expertise.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    AND SELECTION

    1. An applicant must be in possession o an LLB

    degree or be due to be awarded the degreebeore the start o the course. Applicants

    with a BProc degree awarded not later than

    31 December 2004 will also be considered.

    2. A selection committee will consider the ap-

    plications. The committee may require appli-

    cants to attend interviews.

    3. The committee will give consideration to an

    applicants academic record.

    4. Interest by the applicant in continuing to

    work in the attorneys proession will stand in

    the applicants avour.

    IMPORTANT NOTES

    1. There are a limited number o places available

    at each centre. Thereore, it is important that

    applicants submit their orms timeously by the

    closing date.

    2. The Schools Board o Control reserves the right

    to change dates and/or cancel any course i the

    number o applicants is not sufcient. Applicants

    will be given sufcient notice o cancellation.

    3. Students are responsible or their own arrange-

    ments and expenses with regards to accommo-

    dation and travelling. Students may wish to

    deer making accommodation and travelling

    arrangements to attend the School until it is

    clear that the course is not cancelled.

    4. Subject to availability o unds, fnancial assist-

    ance may be made available in deserving cases

    in the orm o interest-ree loans. Loan applica-

    tion orms can be obtained rom the Director o

    the relevant centre and must be returned beore

    the Schools commencement date.5. The medium o instruction is primarily English.

    6. All students will be subjected to literacy and

    numeracy testing as competency in these areas

    is essential in legal practice. In the event o un-

    satisactory perormance, urther training at

    the School will be compulsory.

    7. Legal Practice Bill: should the Bill become law

    beore or during 2012, graduates who have at-

    tended the School will receive recognition or

    the purpose o admission in terms o transi-

    tional arrangements.

    STUDENT EVALUATION

    AND CERTIFICATION

    1. A students progress is monitored throughout

    the course and progress reports are issued

    periodically.

    2. Assessment is done at the end o each mod-

    ule and is ollowed by appropriate remedial

    action, i necessary. The major part o the as-

    sessment is skills based.3. Various awards are presented to students or

    exceptional perormance during the course.

    4. Students who complete the course to the sat-

    isaction o the School Board receive attend-

    ance certifcates.

    5. The Law Society o South Arica awards spe-

    cial certifcates to those students whose per-

    ormance is regarded as outstanding.
