School District Energy Efficiency Challenge:Finding Common Ground
“ENERGYEFFICIENCY”
What do these words
mean to you?

Your input/questions are welcomed! If I don’t seem to understand you,
feel free to do this…
A little bit about me…
:: I love speaking to groups and sharing what I’ve seen and learned, especially the unexpected
:: 20+ years in energy and facilities systems engineering
:: Worked with many school districts and educational institutions
The Expected
There is definite relationship between O&M and Energy Efficiency
Thank you captain obviousDisclaimer: The above photos are purely hypothetical and not associated with any particular school or school district. You would NEVER find such gross examples of neglect in any school district. In fact, this entire disclaimer is purely hypothetical and may not be entirely correct.
The Unexpected
One of the reasons that emerged when we looked deeper….. will be shared at the end of this presentation...
Which is which?
The Challenge
One of the reasons that emerged when we looked deeper….. will be shared at the end of this presentation...
Unlike the obvious,
• Everyone has an opinion as to why something like this is happening and how important it is to fix it.
• Correcting this requires a level of cooperation that goes beyond a simple photograph.
Today’s Agenda
THEME: Energy Efficiency // Operations & Maintenance
FOCUS: Finding Common Ground between stakeholders
Finding Common Ground
A LESSON from Acts chapter 17:
People of Athens: “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”
Finding Common Ground:Energy Efficiency // O&M
What is the common ground?
Where do strategies/results by YOUR group complement strategies/results of THEIR group?
Speak THEIR language, focus on the benefit to them first
Recently observed example… (next page)
Finding Common Ground:Complementary Results
Adapted from “A Tale of Two Schools” - Chad Corbitt, Energy Manager KISD
School “A” – AHU-8
School “B” – AHU-8
Finding Common Ground:Complementary Results
From “A Tale of Two Schools” by Chad Corbitt, Energy Manager KISD
Similarities: School “A” and School “B” are identical, with identical
equipment
Identical space temperature set points, time of day, day (February 13, 2015)
Differences: School “A” is operating status quo, the way it was when
installed
School “B” has undergone re-commissioning by the Energy Department to optimize the operations for part-load conditions
Results: Fewer trouble calls to Maintenance (comfortable
customer, more time for other tasks)
Reduced equipment loading & run-times (longer equipment life)

Energy Efficiency Obstacles
What are some of the obstacles to energy efficiency you see at your district?
What Common Ground do you see as a bridge to overcome some of these obstacles?
