*Susan Wareing visited St Alban’s on Friday 7th July.

It was a very positive visit, resulting in a report, which has been on the Ofsted website since 10th September.

A copy of this report was sent to all parents and carers at the beginning of term.

It was a fantastic report, acknowledging all the hard work undertaken by our school community.

*What did it say about ACHIEVEMENT?

St Alban’s has “raised dramatically the achievement of most pupils and pupil groups across a range of measures, including in mathematics”

“Most gaps in progress are narrowing for those pupils who are supported by the pupil premium. Some gaps have closed entirely.”

“Interventions to improve pupils’ reading and writing have accelerated their progress markedly”

“All teaching is at least good, with a significant proportion that is outstanding.”

“Teachers give consistently helpful feedback to pupils on how they can improve their work and a real dialogue of learning is evident between pupils and their teachers.”

“Behaviour, during the inspection, both in lessons and around the school, and in terms of pupils’ attitudes to learning, was exemplary.”

Our pupils “find school a happy and safe place, where they enjoy their learning.”

The impact being that we have “successfully tackled all the areas for improvement”

English

Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1)

Handwriting – not currently assessed under the national curriculum – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy

Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught debating  and presenting skills

Maths

Five-year-olds will be expected to learn to count up to 100 (compared to 20 under the current curriculum) and learn number bonds to 20 (currently up to 10)

Simple fractions (1/4 and 1/2) will be taught from KS1, and by the end of primary school, children should be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions (e.g. 0.375 = 3/8)

By the age of nine, children will be expected to know times tables up to 12x12 (currently 10x10 by the end of primary school)

Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic

Computing replaces Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with a greater emphasis on programming rather than on operating programmes

From age 5, children will learn to write and test simple programmes , and to organise, store and retrieve data

From age 7, they will be taught to understand computer networks, including the internet

Internet Safety is now part of the curriculum for primary schools

Design & technology

Afforded greater importance under the new curriculum, setting children on the path to becoming the designers and engineers of the future

More sophisticated use of design equipment such as electronics and robotics

In KS2, children will learn about how key events and individuals in design and technology have shaped the world

Languages

It is now statutory to teach a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) in Key Stage 2

Children will be expected to master basic grammar and accurate pronunciation and to converse, present, read and write in the language

(At St. Alban’s, the children learn French.)

We have a committed and much appreciated group of regular adult helpers in school, who have also given up much of their precious time by volunteering on school trips, with reading, number work and cooking.
