Aſter lunch, we marched in formaon through Chester dressed as Roman legionaries, shields and helmets at the ready! Once at the amphitheatre we heard stories of Gladiators and slaves. On our return to the museum we looked at models of the fortress, watched a short video about the life of a Roman soldier and were fascinated by a collecon of Roman stones decorated with Gorgons and other mythical creatures. The trip reinforced and consolidated the work we have covered in the classrooms and on our return Year 3 set to work busily wring interesng and lively accounts of our day. Their creave designs featured bears, gers, cats, mice, fairies and aliens to name but a few. Each design was carefully labelled with the materials they intended to use to make their puppet. Once the designs had been completed the children worked with great concentraon using a wide variety of skills, which included sewing, cung and scking. Everybody took great care to follow their original designs, making some minor adjustments along the way to improve their finished product. The Roman Museum

As part of our History syllabus, Year 3 went to visit the Roman Museum in Chester. Despite the freezing temperature, torrential rain and howling wind, a great day was had by all. We began our day by taking part in a workshop, examining various Roman artefacts, sorting collections of materials and reconstructing a Roman bath house. After lunch, we marched in formation through Chester dressed as Roman legionaries, shields and helmets at the ready! Once at the amphitheatre we heard stories of Gladiators and slaves. On our return to the museum we looked at models of the fortress, watched a short video about the life of a Roman soldier and were fascinated by a collection of Roman stones decorated with Gorgons and other mythical creatures. The trip reinforced and consolidated the work we have covered in the classrooms and on our return Year 3 set to work busily writing interesting and lively accounts of our day.

Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is!

Over the last few weeks, the Year 2 children have been extremely busy in Design and Technology, making some amazing hand puppets. Their creative designs featured bears, tigers, cats, mice, fairies and aliens to name

but a few. Each design was carefully labelled with the materials they intended to use to make their puppet. Once the designs had been completed the children worked with great concentration using a wide variety of skills, which included sewing, cutting and sticking. Everybody took great care to follow their original designs, making some minor adjustments along the way to improve their finished product. It was really pleasing to see just how well the children evaluated their work with great honesty and thought. The Year 2 corridor has now been transformed with a fantastic, colourful puppet show display.

Cross Country Freezing temperatures, sleet, rain and mud did not deter 22 brave Lady

Barn children who took part in race 3 of the Stockport Cross Country League on Saturday 25 November. Conditions for running could not have been worse but all of the children completed the course showing lots of determination. Three children ran for the first time doing amazingly well. A special mention must go to Nina (6S) who, running for her first time, lost her shoe quite early on but still finished in 33rd place. Despite the conditions, seven Lady Barners ran well enough to be placed in the top ten, with over eighty children running in each race. Finlay (6S) finished in 3rd in the Year

5 and 6 boys' race closely followed by debutante Will (6K) in 5th place. Christopher (4G) came 4th in the Year 3 and 4 boys’ race with Daniel (4B) not far behind in 9th place. Sophie (4G) swapped positions with Eloise to come 2nd in the Year 3 and 4 girls' race, closely followed by Gracie (4B) in 4th. Well done to all those children who took part, I was very proud of the way you ran and it was a great team effort. Each place will go towards a team placing for our school in age group and the full results are published on the Stockport Harriers website (www.stockportharriers.co.uk). The next race LBHS will be entering will be on Saturday 9 December and I look forward to seeing even more children representing the school then.

Mr Stutchfield,Year 1 Teacher

Fun with Numicon! In Nursery, the children have been going ‘numbertastic’ with the Numicon shapes, during mathematics. Throughout the autumn term, one number has been introduced each week. Every number has a different shape, a different colour and a different number of peg holes. It has been amazing to watch how quickly the children can identify a Numicon number simply by glancing at its colour or its shape. By next week, we will have reached number 10! In class activities, the children have been playing a range of games, with adults and independently. Here are some of the investigations observed: “That’s 6…and that’s 8!” Ishaan and Laith (NS) using a spinner, finding the matching Numicon shape and checking their answer by putting

correct number of pegs in the holes. “3 and 2 are 5!” Lucy (NS) investigating which Numicon shapes can be fit exactly on top of another. “I’ve done it!” Percy (NJ) having filled the square base plate with a range of Numicon shapes without leaving any gaps at all. “I’ve got 8! Devan (NJ) holding up two pale green shapes with four peg holes on each. “Look at this!” Shanaiya (NJ) ordering the shapes, from 1 to 10, to make a ‘staircase’.

Miss Metcalf, Early Years

ISA Junior Swimming Gala

14 pupils from LBHS travelled to Macclesfield at the weekend to take part in a large event. 24 schools were present, which equated to 3 heats for each event using a pool with eight lanes! Ginny and Gracie in Year 4 stormed through their events, with Ginny qualifying for the Nationals in her freestyle and breaststroke. These U10 girls won their category overall and came away with the shield! Jessica and Bella both won all their heats for the U11 girls and as a result, won the U11 girls category overall, also coming away with the shield! In the boys, Oscar swam superbly in his backstroke heat, winning overall, and awaiting confirmation whether he will be going to London to swim in the National event, representing the North West.

We qualified for the final in both the boys and girls freestyle relays, and it was an extremely tight finish, but in both events we managed to power through to finish 3rd place! Well done swimmers, you were a credit to our school for both your determination to succeed and your support of fellow teammates!
