MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE

Unfortunately a child had brought cupcakes that contained nuts in for Bake sale this week - the nuts were not visible and therefore the cupcakes were sold to the children during morning break. As soon as we discovered the problem, we checked with our severe nut allergic children, to make sure none of them had bought that particular cupcake - luckily none of them had. We would like to remind everyone that Kennedy school is a NUT FREE school, as we have a number of students with severe nut allergies across the year-levels. When someone is allergic to tree nuts (ex. cashew nuts or almonds) or peanuts, being exposed to these would cause the affected student to have a severe and possibly life threatening allergic reaction, in need of medication and hospital care. Please be vigilant in making sure that the cakes/cookies/cupcakes you send to school for Bake sale does NOT contain any nuts or nut-products. If you are not baking or buying the cakes yourself, please make sure that the person who is, is aware that under no circumstances can they contain any nuts or nut-products. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our students safe and still able to enjoy Bake sale days. Henriette Teuchler Head Nurse

Dear Parents,

你们好,新年好!

The Year of the Rooster is approaching. The Lunar New Year will begin on Saturday, the 28th of January this

year.

The rooster is the 10th sign in the Chinese zodiac. It is generally aligned with loyalty, a sociable and friendly

nature and with a punctuality that is bound to impress. How are you going to enjoy this big moment? Students

at Kennedy school are ready to welcome and celebrate this important event of the year.

Chinese New Year Assembly, again, will be an unforgettable experience for the KS community. We will have a whole school CNY assembly on Thursday, 26th of January. We would be very grateful if you could dig into your wardrobe to dress your child in Chinese traditional clothes on the day. If you don’t have any Chinese traditional clothes, please let them wear something red to school to guarantee good luck in the year of the Rooster! Chinese New Year phase assemblies will be also run in the hall and parents of the performers will be invited to watch the shows. As part of Chinese New Year Celebration, we are going to organise a CNY games day for ALL students on Tuesday (24th January 2017). Please see below the time slots that scheduled for each year band to play games:

We need some parent volunteers to look after the game booths in each time slot. We will appreciate it if you

Sign Up for being a parent volunteer in the time slot that your child will be playing.

Thank you for your strong support with your children’s study of Chinese and we look forward to having more

fun in the Year of the Rooster.

恭喜发财,鸡年快乐!

MESSAGE FROM

THE LIBRARY

If your child has a birthday in January, February or March and you would like them to receive a book on their special day, please send $100 in an envelope marked with your child's name and class, how old they will be and who the book will be from. They will be the first to borrow the book and then we'd appreciate it if they would return it to the library after one month. The book will be hand delivered to your child in their classroom on their special day and will have a label inside with a birthday message from the family. Once the book is returned, the label will remain inside for everyone to see. This is a great way to help us add new books to our collection.

We are now, sadly, at the end of Kennedy School’s Book Week for another year, and what a wonderful celebration of reading and stories it has been.

We have had drama performances, visiting authors, bedtime stories, book swaps, a Book Week assembly, story reading every break and lunch time, the teachers vs students book quiz, bookmark and comic strip making, giant books on the classroom doors, photo and movie making competitions and finally, today, our ‘Dress as a Book Character’ parade.

The children’s faces have been a picture of excitement and enthusiasm throughout the week and I know their level of engagement will help to sustain and encourage their interest in reading in the weeks and months ahead and through the rest of their lives. Please visit the school’s Facebook page to see a selection of photos from the week.

We still have one event left. Renowned local author, Sarah Brennan, is with us next week to present her new book to all classes in the school.

Results of the various competitions will be announced in the coming days.

Thank you for your support.

Reading in Extreme Circumstances Children have a photo taken of themselves reading in an unusual place – under the bed, on top of the Macau Tower, sitting on playground apparatus, etc. E mail the photo to Mr Moore (include your name and class number) or bring a printed copy to school.

4J held the first class assembly of the year in our new hall on Tuesday. The theme of the assembly was related to Book Week. We heard about all the events that were planned for book week - reading in various locations around the school, a book quiz between students and teachers, bedtime stories in pyjamas, a competition reading in exceptional circumstances and a book swap. 4J told us an alternative story of The Three Little Pigs' based on Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes which was brilliant. A very entertaining version it was too. The narrators were fantastic as were the characters in the story! It was clear that the Year 3 and 4 students and parents of 4J thoroughly enjoyed the assembly! A wonderful launch to book week. The acoustics and lighting in the hall worked so well too and our new tiered seating meant everyone could see the 4J children on stage. Well done 4J and Mr Moore and thank you to all those parents who attended. I hope you were all impressed with our hall!
