New Directions: Grandview Elementary School seeks to support students as they care for: Themselves, Others, the Environment, their Family Roots and Traditions, and the Work they do at school. Over the course of the 2015-16 school year the school focused on three initiatives;

1. Benchmarking - implementation of a common school-wide approach to assessing student reading levels using Fountas and Pinnell as well as implementing a tracking tool to show individual growth over time.

2. PBIS - Continued to implement the Positive Behaviour Intervention and Support Program with intentional teaching during collaboration time.

3. Supports - Implementation of a pyramid of supports system of intervention for students who are not meeting essential outcomes in reading.

Opportunities and Challenges:

1. Considered the implications of boundary changes and their impact on the re-purposing of Grandview Elementary School beginning on the the Fall of 2017.

2. Continue to refine Grandview’s tracking tool so that the data collected results in early intervention.

3. Building the capacity of teachers to design Literacy programming using Fountas and Pinnell as a resource.

A Year of Success:

1. We are proud of the achievements of our students and of the learning opportunities provided for them, reflecting both the vision: “A culture of respect, inclusion, caring and excellence, where every student succeeds,” and the mission of Red Deer Public Schools, “Striving for excellence by inspiring learning and nurturing hope in every student.”

Comment on Results: Analysis and Action

● All classes from grades 1 - 5 used Fountas and Pinnell as a common benchmark for reading. Future professional

development will centre on benchmarking validity and reliability. ● School-wide use of Fountas and Pinnell as a reading assessment tool resulted in more accurate data regarding reading

performance of Grandview students. The Response to Intervention framework will be used to further support students who are not meeting the criteria for reading literacy for their age.

● Staff collaboration time set aside over the course of the 2015-16 school year resulted in a focus on the identification of

essential outcomes in reading, team lesson planning regarding those outcomes, and the development of common assessments.

Comment on Results: Analysis and Action ● Good reason to celebrate that parents, teachers, and students are consistently reporting that students feel safe at

school, learning the importance of caring for others, learning respect for others and are treated fairly at school. ● Systematic data collection on essential outcomes focused on reading performance resulted in more targeted

supports to identified students. Education Plan goals identify training in benchmarking accuracy as well as using the data to plan programming.

● Though parents and students communicated high levels of satisfaction, there was a desire on the part of parents and

teachers to provide more consistent support to children with diverse learning needs and to increase support to teachers in the development of Individual Support Plans (ISP’s).

● School based equity committee has been established to facilitate district discussions on questions of equity.

Run, battery collection, Christmas Bureau collection, Christmas adopt-a-family, student secretaries, reading buddies, milk distribution, recycle program).

● Facilitated the transition of grade 5 students to middle school through grade 6 orientations at Eastview and Central Middle. ● Enhanced the basic instruction program with a variety of guest presenters (ie; Earth Rangers, Hip Hop, Fire Safety,

Sportball, Netball, Brain Walk, Roadeo, etc). ● Health Action Team (HAT), a group of student leaders from grades 4 and 5 contribute to the overall health of the school by
