Thought for the day: There is a close connection between getting up in the world and getting up in the morning ATHLETICS DAY Last Wednesday our whole school athletics was held. The school was awash with colour as the children all wore their house colours. All the children displayed our school SAIL values by giving everything a go and trying their hardest. The day fin- ished with the very close sprint finals, the hotly contested house relays, and the highly anticipated relay between the staff, stu- dents and parents. This year the students proved too fast for the staff and parents and took out the coveted ‘black baton’. After all the points from the day were tallied, the victorious house was…...TATAHI!! Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and to the parents for your wonderful support of your children. - Aidan Barnett, Sports Coordinator Earthquake Debrief and Thank You We sincerely hope that your family and property remained safe and well throughout the earthquake and thank you so much for your positive response to us closing the school on Monday. The Ministry of Education enacted a blanket closure of schools between Canterbury and Wellington and we quickly responded with messages to families and staff through our student management system. The earthquake was a significant one and required visual checks to be made on the buildings. We are also in the Tsunami risk area so a close watch regarding civil defence messages was kept throughout the day. While we are all very grateful this event did not occur during school time, we have good systems in place for most eventualities and will obviously be reflecting on these in the days to come. If you have any questions or constructive feedback regarding our response to this event, please do email them to me at [email protected] As a result of our student management system text to families to advise them of the school closure yesterday, it has become apparent that we do not have up to date cellphone numbers for all families. If your landline or cellphone numbers or address has changed and you think we may not have the correct information, please either come into the office, call us on 548 6167, or email on [email protected] School and Community Newsletter No 17 15 November 2016 Tahunanui School News I can – I will Ka tāea – ka tutuki Did you know that Smurfs have a tail?
