Let’s Make It!Children are especially responsive to the various holidays and themes associated with the fourseasons. With this in mind, Teacher’s Friend has published the “Winter” Idea Book to assist teachers in motivating students.

WHO USES THIS BOOK:Preschool and elementary teachers along with scoutleaders, Sunday school teachers and parents all lovethe monthly and seasonal idea books. Each idea orcraft can easily be adapted to fit a wide range ofabilities and grade levels. Kindergartners can color andcut out the simple, bold patterns while older studentslove expanding these same patterns to a more complexformat. Most of the ideas and activities are open-ended.Teachers may add their own curriculum appropriate forthe grade level they teach. Young children may practicenumber, color or letter recognition while older studentsmay like to drill multiplication facts or matchhomophones.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THIS BOOK:Teachers and parents will find a variety of crafts, activities, bulletin board ideas and patterns that complement themonthly holidays and seasonal themes. Children will bedelighted with the booklet cover, bingo cards, nametags, mobiles, place cards, writing pages and game boards. There is also a special section devoted to the sport of theseason!

HOW TO USETHIS BOOK:Every page of thisbook may beduplicated for individual classroom use. Some pagesare meant to be used as duplicating masters orstudent worksheets. Most of the crafts and patternsmay be copied onto construction paper or printed onindex paper. Children can then make the crafts bycoloring them using crayons or colored markers andcutting them out. Many of the pages can be enlargedwith an overhead or opaque projector. The patternscan then be used for door displays, bulletin boards ormurals.

Making mobiles is especially fun for all ages. Teachers may like to simplify mobile construc-tion for young children by using one of these ideas.

DRINKING STRAW MOBILE Thread a piece of yarn through a plastic drinking strawand tie a mobile pattern to each end. Flatten a paper clipand bend it around the center of the straw for hanging. The mobile can easily be balanced by adjusting the yarn.(Older students can make their mobiles the same way butmay wish to add additional levels by hanging othermobiles directly below the first.)

CLOTHES HANGERMOBILEMobiles can easily bemade with a wire clotheshanger, as shown.Just tie each patternpiece to the hangerwith thread, yarn orkite string.

YARN MOBILE Gluing the pattern pieces to a lengthof yarn makes the most simple mobile, each piece spaced directly beneath theother. Tie a bow at the top and hangin a window or from the ceiling.

CLIP ART PAGES:The illustrations on these pages may be used in classroom bulletins, newsletters, notes home or just to decorate your own worksheets. Copythe clip art pages, cut out the illustrations you want, and paste them toyour original before printing. The drawings may be enlarged or reduced ona copy machine. You are also free to enlarge the illustrations for otheruses, such as bulletin boards, calendar decorations, booklet covers andawards.

PLACE CARDS OR NAMETAGS:If possible, laminate the finished nametags or place cards after you havecopied them onto colored index paper. Use a dry transfer marker or darkcrayon to write each name on the laminated surface. After the special day, simply wipe off the names with a tissue for use at another time.

POETRY:Children love simple, clever poetry. Use the poems in this book to inspire your students. You may want to have the students rewrite the poems for a timely record of their advancinghandwriting skills.

Each morning, copy one or two lines, or an entire poem, on the class board. Ask thechildren to copy it in their best handwriting. Instruct them to write the date at the top of thepage. Collect the poem pages and organize them chronologically in individual folders. This isa great way to show parents how their child’s handwriting has improved throughout the year.

STAND-UP CHARACTERS:All of the stand-up characters in this bookcan easily be made from construction orindex paper. Children can add the color andcut them out. The characters can be used astable decorations, name cards or used in apuppet show. Several characters can also bejoined at the hands, as shown. Thecharacters can also be enlarged on posterboard for a bulletin board display or reducedin size for use in a diorama or as fingerpuppets.

BULLETIN BOARDS:Creating clever bulletin boards can be a fun experience for you and your students. Many ofthe bulletin board ideas in this book contain patterns that the students can make themselves. You simply need to cover the board with bright paper and display the appropriate heading.Students can make their own stocking for a classroom Christmas mantle or creative writingmittens for a fun winter display.

Many of the illustrations in this book can also be enlarged and displayed on a bulletin board.Use an overhead or opaque projector to do your enlargements. When you enlarge acharacter, think BIG! Figures three, four or even five feet tall can make a dramatic display.Use colored butcher paper for large displays eliminating the need to add color with markersor crayons.

WHATEVER YOU DO...Have fun using the ideas in this book. Be creative! Develop your own ideas and adapt thepatterns and crafts to fit your own curriculum. By using your imagination, you will beencouraging your students to be more creative. A creative classroom is a fun classroom! Onethat promotes an enthusiasm for learning!

CATCH A SNOWFLAKE!The next time it snows, have your students run outside andcatch snowflakes on pieces of dark colored constructionpaper. Ask them to examine the snowflakes carefullyand see if there are any two snowflakes alike. (Forbest results, keep the construction paper in arefrigerator so that the snowflakes melt moreslowly.)

WINTER IMPROVISATIONS!Ask your students to act out the life of asnowflake. The children will love pantomimingthe forming of the snowflake, floating to theground and eventually melting.

FREEZING WATERSWinter is a great time of year to teach children

what happens to water when it freezes!

Cut the top off a large tin can and fill itcompletely with water. Place the can in thefreezer or outside overnight, if your weatheris cold enough. The next morning, askstudents to examine the level of the water.

Older children may like to research the reasons why some substances contract while others expand when frozen.

This would be a great time to make frozen Popsicles that the whole class can enjoy.

ABOUT THE SEASONSWhat is the real reasonThat we have each season?

When it’s WINTER and it rains and snows,We bundle up like Eskimos.

Flowers and blossoms cover the groundWhen winter is finished and SPRING comes around.

We readily know it’s SUMMER we’ve gotWhen the temperature’s high and the sun is hot.

Then AUTUMN comes when the weather is chilly, When cold, crisp winds blow willy-nilly.

There are these seasons, numbering four. When all are finished, they repeat once more.

WWWWIIIINNNNTTTTEEEERRRR BBBBIIIINNNNGGGGOOOO¡¡¡¡This game offers an exciting way to introduce students to the winter season.Give each child a copy of the bingo words listed below or write the words onthe chalkboard. Ask students to write any 24 words on his or her bingo card.Use the same directions you might use for regular bingo.

Jack Frost!Jack Frost is an imaginary elf that sup-posedly creates the lacy patterns of froston windows, trees, and just about every-thing in the cold, winter outdoors.

He’s found in countless nursery rhymes andchildren’s stories, often nipping people’s noseswith the cold. Jack Frost is often said to appearonly after we have gone to sleep. He then dartsfrom window to window, painting lacy crystals orfrost on each pane.

Children might like to write creative stories about JackFrost, or descriptive poems after observing Jack’sbeautiful icy creations.

Cut this Jack Frostfrom colored paper.Color with markers or

crayons. Use brass fasten-ers to assemble at the dots.

Teachers: You might like toaward one pattern piece of Jack

Frost for each act of good behavior orcompleted assignment. Children can then

assemble the pieces together when they have col-lected all six pieces.

JANUARYMy new calendar is temporary.Of course, it begins in January,But when 365 days are done,I know I’ll need another one.

In January, cold weather staysEvery one of 31 days.Football fans will watch and freeze. But most stay home with their TV’s.

TIME MARCHES ONJanuary offers the perfect opportunity to teach theconcept of time. You might want to display a largeclock face on the class bulletin board, or have eachstudent make his or her own large clock face withmovable hands. The teacher can call out a specifictime and then instruct the students to arrange theclock hands on their individual clocks to the correcttime.

With younger students, explore the concepts of past, present, future, before and after.

RESOLUTION T-SHIRTSStudents love to make statements with theclothes they wear. In this case, have thatstatement be a positive New Year’s resolution!

Have each student bring to school a plain coloredor white T-shirt. Students can design their ownpersonal resolutions using permanent coloredmarkers. (Place a piece of cardboard on theinside of each T-shirt prior to coloring to keepthe colors from bleeding through.) You may liketo display the shirts on a class clothesline beforeletting the students wear them.

To avoid the cost of real T-shirts, simply makepaper T-shirts cut from white butcher paper. These will also make a fun, creative class display!

JANUSIn ancient times, the Romans had agod who was responsible forwatching the old year go and thenew year come. To do this, he issaid to have had two faces so thathe could look both ways at thesame time. The Romans called thistwo-faced god Janus. Our firstmonth, January, is named afterhim.

Students might like to discuss whatthe term "two-faced" means today.Older students can also researchother Roman and Greek gods andfind out about their names andlegends.
