Indisputably DistinguishedFrom Adversity to AvocationNot everyone thinks of debating as a team sport — but at UNLV, a team of highly motivated and focused students has been getting a lot of attention in key national competitions. Students like Brian Warren, a criminal justice major, are honing valuable skills and scoring significant wins.

Warren and other team members are excelling in this highly competitive arena with support from a Berman Debate Forum Scholarship. This distinguished program allows UNLV to attract students who love to debate, are drivento improve — and have what it takes to be part of a winning team.

Sophia Quinton’s drive to become a cancer researcher started well before the Honors College undergrad began analyzing DNA in a UNLV bioinformatics lab. When she was in the sixth grade, Quinton was diagnosed with leukemia.

“My battle with cancer at age 11 inspired me,” she says. “Now I had a strong reason to devote myself to research that would ultimately impact others.”

Quinton was recently awarded a nationally coveted Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Her studies are also fueled by a Bennett Family Honors Scholarship, a Hixson-Lied Success Scholarship, and a Louis Woitishek Scholarship.

Morality Under FireWhat makes people moral — and what makes human morality unravel? Those are the crucial questions that Michael Moncrieff is exploring through his research.

Moncrieff, who just received a Ph.D. in anthropology, studied survivors of the Yugoslav Wars to understand how people reorganize themselves during ethnic strife. He traveled to the small hamlet of Kistanje, Croatia to find out how perspectives on morality change during times of extreme duress.

His experiences abroad were made possible by a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. A UNLV President’s Fellowship, funded through gifts to the UNLV Foundation, supported his doctoral studies at UNLV.

Lights, Camera, OpportunityFilm major Brenna Spector is a master storyteller. She is also a Devos Fine Arts Scholar, an Engelstad Scholar, and a Hixson-Lied Scholar.

Through the Engelstad Scholar community service program, Spector has been partnering with Opportunity Village to raise awareness of the experiences of people with disabilities. She led projects like Afternoons with Amanda, a talk show hosted by an Opportunity Village client.

“It’s inspiring to see the strengths and uniqueness of individuals with disabilities through their stories,” Spector says. “I hope my work inspires greater community engagement.”

I am part of the American Dream. I was the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college. I want to say thank you for believing in me and my success.

“Without these scholarships, I would be lost in the college process. They motivate me to work hard and allow me to thrive.”

“This scholarship helps me focus on my studies, maintain my GPA, participate in research, and pursue further academic

studies. Your act of generosity teaches me one valuable thing, which is to give back to the community.”

“I want to thank you for your selfless support of one poor,

struggling graduate student. Your support gives me a little more confidence, helps me feel a little less stressed, and helps keep a roof over my small family of two (plus one cat and one tortoise),

while I finish my education.”

“Your gift made a big difference in my life. I will be better able to support my family and show

them that there is support for people who want to pursue

higher education.

“As a nontraditional student with a large family your scholarship has been an integral part of making a seemingly impossible dream come true. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. “

“Looking at the life that I was born into, no one could imagine that I am where I am today. I was born in a third world country, was raised without a father, and grew up with just enough to get by. Becoming a doctor is difficult to imagine for a child with these roots. However, scholarship donors like you have made my dreams a reality. Thank you for helping students like me reach our potential.”
