– Graded by appropriate Subject Area Panels, which send top percentile to AHRC Management Board, which makes the final decision (early May)
College Scholarship applications– Graded by appropriate Subject Area Panels, which send
top percentile to College panel, which makes the final decision (May for Doctoral Awards; June for M-level awards)
School Scholarship applications– Graded by School panels; scrutinised and ratified by
College panel (June) University Scholarships
– Nominated by College panel to University panel, which makes the final decision (July/August)

Grading schemeAssessors’ Grade Definition
1 Exceptional Application, top priority for an award
2 Excellent application, very high priority for an award
3 Excellent application, high priority for an award
4 Good application, priority for an award
5 Satisfactory application, but not a priority
6 Poor application, not recommended for an award
Normally, only applications rated ‘1’ (or, rarely, ‘2’) receive awards. If your application is unsuccessful, you will be notified of your ‘grade’.
