CORAL REEF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
SCHOLARSHIP BULLETIN
DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020
10 Tips on Winning a Scholarship 1. Start searching for scholarships as soon as possible. Don't wait until spring of your senior year in high school to start searching, or you'll miss half the deadlines. Continue searching for scholarships even after you are enrolled in college. Consider this like a full time job. 2. Answer all of the optional questions on a scholarship matching web site for about twice as many matches. 3. Use a free scholarship matching service like Fastweb.com. The Fastweb database is updated daily, and the site will email you notifications of new scholarships that match your personal background profile. www.cappex.com and www.studentscholarhips.org are also very good. 4. Pick up applications for local scholarships in Ms. Gilman’s office (when available) or the financial aid offices of local colleges & universities, and check out the public library's jobs and careers section. 5. Apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible. Pursue less competitive scholarships, such as small awards and essay contests, since they are easier to win and the money adds up and helps you win bigger scholarships. 6. Don't miss deadlines. Use a calendar and checklist to get organized. 7. Tailor your application to the sponsor's goals. Read and follow the instructions carefully. 8. If you have difficulty writing essays, try recording yourself as you answer the question out loud, and transcribe the recording later. Most people can think and speak faster than they can write or type. Create an outline afterward to organize your thoughts. 9. Personalize your essay and be passionate. Write about something of interest to you. Make your application stand out from the crowd. Talk about your impact on other people. Give examples and be specific.
10. Google your name and make sure you have a professional online profile. Use a professional email address such as your Coral Reef email. Clean up the content of your Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat/TikTok etc… accounts, removing inappropriate and immature material. Scholarship Name Award Deadline Eligibility Criteria Boston University’s

• Complete the TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY found on the
Common/Coalition App as part of your app to BU – these are the prompts:
School can often seem like work: a set of responsibilities, obligations, and tasks to
be completed. But Trustee Scholars are creative and curious, rather than merely
dutiful. Give us a glimpse of an intellectual pursuit or challenge that absorbs you,
gives you joy, or provokes your curiosity, and tell us why.
One of BU’s most distinguished alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote that “The
time is always right to do what’s right.” Is there a time when you sought equity and
fairness by challenging a social norm? Or, can you share an example of how you can
imagine yourself helping to create a more inclusive and fair community?

NEW!! Bezos Scholarship Program for HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS - Every year, 17 exceptional high school
juniors and an educator from each school are selected as Bezos Scholars. Scholars are chosen from across the U.S. and the African Leadership Academy
in Johannesburg, South Africa. After spending a week immersed in learning at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Scholars return home and develop a community
change project to make a positive difference in their communities. Once selected, Scholars join a global alumni network where they are offered
opportunities to connect, collaborate, get inspired, and take action for the greater good. Scholars build connections with peers and educators from across
the U.S. and Africa, get inspired by global leaders, and collaborate with their communities to make a meaningful impact. After being immersed in learning
at the Aspen Ideas Festival and engaging in year-long leadership development opportunities, Scholars ignite action in their schools, communities, and
beyond by developing and executing their own community change project, known as a Local Ideas Festival (LIF).
Scholars have researched and addressed a diverse range of issues unique to their communities, such as mental health awareness and advocacy, civic
engagement, STEM education, literacy, environmental justice, and refugee and immigrant rights and inclusion. Scholars join the program with different
lived experiences, strengths, areas for growth, levels of demonstrated leadership, and unique passions and interests. This diversity is one of the greatest
strengths and learning opportunities with the program. Throughout the year-long experience, Scholars build capacities associated with values-based
leadership, social-emotional learning, and social innovation. Bezos Scholars Program outcomes are aligned with the Multi-Institutional Study of
Leadership—a quantitative research program that examines how to leverage learning and development both inside and outside of traditional classroom
environments. APPLICATIONS ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE AT: https://www.bezosscholars.org/apply/
