Released for iPhone December 15, 2016

The latest game from Nintendo was released for iPhones this week.

The first Mario game for mobile platform.

The app was downloaded more that 5 million times in the first 24 hours and made between 4 and 8 million worldwide.

Mario runs across the screen and users control when and how high he jumps with a tap.

The goal is to collect as many coins as possible by the end of the level and to progress through the levels to save Princess Peach.

Most die-hard Mario fans are pleased.

While #1 in the app store in the US, it did not reach the same popularity in Japan- the worlds largest smartphone market.

The app is listed in the “free games” section of the app store but users can only play a trial for free and require $9.99 to download all features.

Many users felt they were dealt a bait and switch.

The app has more than 58,000 reviews, with more than half of them being one star.

Reviews like…

“It’s fun but is it 10$ fun?”

“I feel like Nintendo just doesn’t care.”

“Meh.”

“I thought Nintendo could do better than this.”

Due to the negative reviews and failed expectations of investors, shares of Nintendo fell 7.1% as of yesterday.

Many say Nintendo did not know its customer base well enough or that they made a fatal error in their price point..

Nintendo will have to step up their game to keep up with smartphone users who want mobile experiences that are more interactive and have stellar graphics and mechanics.

The trial version can also only played while the user is connected to the internet and there have been reports of the game crashing frequently.
