Personal appearance required?

The documents have to be submitted directly at the Embassy or at one of the below men-tioned receiving offices. Shipment by mail is not acceptable.

Since the Schengen Visa Information System VIS was intro-duced in November 2013 fingerprint scans are necessary for all applicants. Thus personal appearance is inevitable. Children below the age of 12 are exempted.

© EU-Kommission

Applicants who obtained a Schengen visa marked „VIS“ from the German Embassy or a foreign mission of another Schengen country during the last five years, are normally not required to appear in person for their next application.

Please check the application form accordingly:

However, personal appearance will be necessary if the fingerprints previously saved in VIS cannot be used for the new application. This may be due to technical problems or to inferior quality of the scans.

Besides, the Embassy is free to request personal appearance if deemed to be necessary for processing the application.
