A Modern Day Parable, by Leonard
Sweet…
There was a pretzel stand in front of a big
office building in New York City. "Pretzels 50
cents," read the sign. One day, a man came
out of the building and saw a look of pain
and frustration in the face of the old woman
behind the pretzel stand. Whereupon, he
plunked down two quarters, and then went on his way without
taking a pretzel. That happened every day for weeks. Finally, the
old woman running the stand spoke up and said, “Sir, excuse
me. May I have a word with you?”
The man replied, “I know. I know. You're going to ask me why I
give you fifty cents every day and don't take a pretzel.”
“Not at all,” the woman replied. “I just wanted to tell you that the
price is now 75 cents."
How many of us are like that with God--who continually lavishes
grace and gifts on us without anything in return except our asks
for more.
I pray that today you recognize the grace and gifts of God and
that you lavish those gifts on others. I look forward to seeing you
Sunday.
In Christ,
Rick Enns [email protected]

Greetings!
I trust that
everyone is
having a
wonderful new
year! The youth
ministry has
enjoyed a
wonderful start
to the new
year. Wednesday nights have started strong
and we have incorporated Grow Groups into
our Sunday nights. I am especially excited
about the Grow Groups as I truly believe that
they will make the greatest impact on our youth
as they seek to truly grasp hold of what it
means to be a disciple. The concept for our
Grow Groups is to send youth out for the week
with challenges to practice in order to live the
lifestyle of a disciple instead of just talking
about it. Our grow groups are broken down by
age and gender in order to better meet the
needs of each student. The point is that I really
believe Grow Groups are going to make a huge
impact and I would ask you to encourage the
youth in your lives to participate!
We also have a retreat coming up February 16-
17. The retreat will be held out at Ceta Canyon
and is called Restore. The purpose of the
retreat is to help youth break out of the grind of
everyday life and focus on being restored in
their relationship with God. If you would like to
sign your youth up for the retreat you can do so
by contacting me at [email protected] or
calling me at 336-1699.
Last but not least, do not forget about sign ups
for summer camps. Dates and info can be
found on Ceta Canyon's website
(cetacanyon.org). Sign ups need to go through
First United Methodist Church of Canyon office!
Some scholarships are available.
Thank you for continuing to pray for our youth
in Canyon!

Thank You Notes Thank you to everyone for all you did to make
the Angel Tree Ministry of 2012 such a
success. Thanks to your willingness to be the
hands and feet of Jesus on earth, 159 children
in our community had a much happier
Christmas this year. It would be impossible to
accomplish such a tremendous undertaking
without the help of our church family who
served as volunteers for Angel Tree in so many
ways. Whether you made cookies, delivered
gifts, purchased presents for the children,
helped with work days to organize for parent
pick-up day...the list of volunteer opportunities
goes on and on. A special thanks to the church
office staff for the extra duties they took on
during such a busy time of the year. We are
also grateful to the adult Sunday School
classes who helped make sure that all the
children were shown the love of Jesus in action
during this Christmas season.
Blessing to each and every one of you!
Rita Wynn and Rhonda Behrens
(Angel Tree Ministry Coordinators)
Dear Church Family,
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers
during our time of loss and grief. We are truly
blessed with such a great church family.
God bless you all,
Tim, Toni & the Huddleston family
Dear Church Family,
Thank you so much for your support and love
as I have begun exploring the call to ministry. I
am especially grateful for your help in providing
plane tickets for me to fly to Asbury to preview
the seminary. Being on campus for a day and
a half helped me to make the decision to
attend Asbury and to pursue a Masters of Arts
in Spiritual Formation.
I am looking forward to what God is doing in
you and in me, and I will miss you so much
while I am away at school!
Thanks again,
Vondel Stevens
Thank you, Thank you Thank you—
I was recently blessed by some members of
your congregation and words cannot express
how your unconditional care for others have
touched our lives and have made a simple
home with many needed repairs look, so
elegant! When the statement, “God Bless
without stress” comes into play I and my
daughter experienced this first hand—some
gentlemen—Shawn Burns and Chuck Cogswell
made arrangements to assist me (a single
mother) to have beautiful carpet put in 3 rooms
of my house. The task wasn’t easy, but LW of
Quality Carpet wouldn’t even take a bottle of
cold water until the job was almost done. I was
short on carpet and another arrangement
made at what I thought was a minimal expense
to get the job completed. I was so over joyed to
get the hand me down carpet laid that I was
speechless. Now some weeks later came
home after night school to open the mail for
the day to see that the money I spent to buy
additional carpet had been sent back to me. I
began to cry to think considerate Christian
people who know nothing of me had put
themselves aside to bless me and mine.
Thanks to all of you and your mission through
Backyard of Canyon for all you do and I truly
appreciate you!
God Bless,
Bettye Parker & family
Hands and Hearts Wanted
Due to the high number of children attending, Kim
Hopson, Director of Children’s Ministry is looking for
some willing hands and hearts to come love these
children and help disciple them. The 234 class
(2nd, 3rd, & 4th graders) are having 25-30 kids a
week and she is looking for more volunteers so we
can minister to these children more effectively.
Crafty personalities wanted to help out with the
Club 56 Art Club. All the leaders do a marvelous job
and I am so proud of our program. Just looking to
add to the greatness we have. AND More kids
equal more opportunity to share the Story of God! If
you are interested in helping, please contact Kim
Hopson at 655-2851 or [email protected].
She can’t wait to hear from you.
Farewell from the Biffles
Dear Friends,
We want to take this opportunity to express
our love and appreciation for more that 20
wonderful years at FUMC Canyon. George
has been hired as the Director of Music
Ministries at Polk Street United Methodist
Church in Amarillo. It is with mixed emotions
that we begin this new chapter in our lives.
Nancy moved to FUMC Canyon with her
family (Davis) when she was 10 years old and
remained until she graduated from college.
We returned as a couple in 1992. George
was blessed to serve as choir director for 16
years and Nancy has loved teaching, leading
retreats and serving on various committees.
We’ve made life-long friends and FUMC has
played a major role in our spiritual
development. We will continue to support
Costa Rica VIM with our prayers, finances
and presence. Our time with you was life
changing. We thank God for all these
blessings.
This opportunity came as a complete and
unexpected surprise. However, we sense
God’s leading and hope you will rejoice with
us as we enter this new ministry. We are
eager for the opportunity, but we will dearly
miss our brothers and sisters in Canyon,
especially the Searchers Class taught by
Mike Bellah. Our friends we have loved in
Wednesday night choir, Bible studies and
UMW are too numerous to mention.
We are thankful for our time with Rick Enns.
There is no doubt in our mind that God sent
Rick’s strong leadership in answer to many
prayers. Our thanks to the entire staff and
membership of FUMC Canyon for making the
past 20 years unforgettable. You all remain
in our prayers.
Love,
George & Nancy Biffle
