Dannette Gomez Beane, Ph.D.
Dannette grew up in South Texas and went to an AAAAA (5A) public school. She left Texas to attend Hollins University - a small, women’s, liberal arts school in Virginia. It was there that she learned she wanted a career in higher education. After graduation, Dannette joined AmeriCorps in an assignment with College Summit where she helped low income, inner-city youth apply for college. This work led her to pursue a Masters in Counselor Education and secure a job in college admissions. After completing her Masters degree, she became an academic advisor at Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies. The academic work led her to pursue a doctorate and to work with graduate students. Dannette served as the Director of Graduate Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives for seven years and completed her Ph.D. part time. Today, she serves as the Director of Recruitment and Operations for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Virginia Tech.

Menah Pratt-Clarke, Ph.D.
Menah Pratt-Clarke is the Vice President for Strategic Affairs and Diversity at Virginia Tech. She is also Professor of Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She has almost 25 years of leadership experience in higher education, with a focus on large-scale institutional transformation. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, she held senior positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Vanderbilt University. At Venderbilt, she served as the University Compliance Officer, Assistant Secretary of the University, and University Counsel. She has a bachelors and masters degree from the University of Iowa, and a masters degree, Ph.D., and law degree from Vanderbilt University. She recently released A Black Woman’s Journey from Cotton Picking to College Professor: Lessons about race, gender, and class in America. (Peter Lang, 2018), which was awarded the American Education Studies Associate Critics’ Choice Award for scholarship deemed to be outstanding in its field.
Ellington Graves, Ph.D.
Ellington Graves is Assistant Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and the Director of the Africana Studies Program in the Department of Sociology. He has been a faculty member at Virginia Tech for 19 years, teaching courses ranging from Sociological Theory and Social Inequity to African American Identity and Leadership for Change. He received his B.A. in Sociology from the The Johns Hopkins University, his M.S. in Sociology from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hometown: Ivor, VA.
Luisa Burgos
Luisa earned her Bachelors from James Madison University in Political Science. Then worked for a white collar crime law firm for a year before starting her Masters in Higher Education at Virginia Tech. She has served in several roles at Virginia Tech including working for Student Success Center, Cultural and Community Centers, The Graduate School Office of Recruitment, Diversity, and Inclusion; and The Provost Office of Inclusion and Diversity. Today, Luisa serves as Assistant Director for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. She is very excited to bring her experiences to help underserved and marginalized populations thrive at Virginia Tech!
Alphonso Garrett
Alphonso Garrett serves as Director of Undergraduate Diversity Recruitment Iniatives in the Office of Enrollment Management at Virginia Tech. In this capacity, he advises the Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Director of Undergraduate Admissions on matters regarding admission and recruitment for underrepresented and underserved students. He also leads the Office of Undegraduate Admissions Diversity Recruitment Team and is a member of the admissions review committee. Beyond his roles at Virginia Tech, Alphonso is currently President of the Virginia Association for Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, co-founder Diversity Iniatives for Collaborative Education - a multiple university committee dedicated to college access, and holds membership in the Virginia College Access Network, the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, and Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling. Alphonso is a first generation college student, Army Veteran, has earned a B.S. in Communication, a M.S. Ed and Graduate Certificate in Enrollment Management, and is currently pursuing an Ed.S. in Instructional Technology through Virginia Tech’s School of Education.
Errol Alexander Arcienega
Hailing from humble beginnings in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Errol Alexander Arcienega is a proud Latino alumnus of Virginia Tech, holding a degree in Criminology from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences with a minor in Biological Sciences. Mr. Arcienega served on the board of the Latino Association of Student Organizations, assisted in founding a chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Incorporated, and maintained involvement with the LatinX community all throughout his undegraduate career. As a recent alumni, Mr. Arcienega has a thorough understanding of student life and interactions. Continuing his dedication to his community, Mr. Arcienega also advises Latin Link, the largest LatinX organization on campus. Serving his new role as Program Manager for the Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources (SOAR) program, an initiative under the Office for Inclusion and Diversity, Errol has returned to campus with renewed vigor and energy to elevate his community and their allies, while continuing the legacy of Ut Prosim.
Andrew Alston
Andrew Alston is Program Assistant with the Office for Inclusion and Diversity at Virginia Tech. He is also a full-time student: a senior Physchology major and spanish minor at Virginia Tech. He is also a second-year Business Management major at New River Community College in Dublin, VA. Alston, a native of Hampton, VA, began working for the university in Spring of 2016 as a Technical Assistant & SafeRide Operator with the Virginia Tech Police Department. He later worked within large scale conference planning with Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech, as a Conference Registrar, serving on a team that managed nearly 400 programs per year, serving 35,000+ participants. In his current role as Program Assistant, Andrew strives to provide leadership on InclusiveVT, Virginia Tech’s institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence.
Mercedes Ramírez-Fernández, Ph.D.
Mercedes Ramírez-Fernández serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Strategic Affairs and Diversity. In her capacity she develops and supports innovative programs and policies relevant to diversity and inclusion across campus. She has an undergraduate degree in Pyschology with Spanish Literature concentration from the University of Puerto Rico; a masters degree in Counseling Pyschology from the University of Iowa, and a doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania.
Nastasha Saunders
Natasha currently serves ast the Director of SOAR or Student Opportunity and Achievement Resources. Her background is in agriculture and diversity recruitment and retention. Natasha’s passion is to assist individuals with actualizing their potential and identifying personal strengths and talents. She also, serves as the Vice President for the Virginia Tech Black Caucus in which they advocate for faculty, staff and students. Her motto that she lives by is, “feel the fear and do it anyway.” Facing and overcoming your fear is the only way to level up!! Some of her interests and hobbies include international travel, hosting curated cultural events and serving her community. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends as they are the reason and purpose behind her work!
Duston Scarborough
Joining us from the City of Hampton, Mr. Duston Scarborough is an alumni of Virginia Tech by way of the Pamplin College of Business. After completing his undergraduate experience in 2013 with a degree in Marketing Management, Mr. Scarborough began his career with Ferguson Enterprise as a sales trainee at their corporate offices in Newport News, VA. After a short time with the company, Duston switched directions and took on a new industry: urban retail. Beginning as a sales associate with industry leader DTLR Inc. (Now DTLRVILLA with a recent acquisition), he quickly ascended the ranks, landing the role of Corporate Community Outreach Coordinator at the company’s headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. Also in his time away from Tech, Mr. Scarborough has been an active part of alumni efforts, having served three years on the Black Alumni Reunion Committee and two with the Black College Institute, the latter paving the way for his return to campus! Duston is excited to be home here in Blacksburg and to contribute to the rapidly improving climate for diversity in his new role as the Associate Director of Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources (SOAR) in the Office of Inclusion and Diversity (OID).
Linwood Moore
Originally from Portsmouth, VA where he graduated from I.C. Norcom High School. In addition to working for Virginia Tech, he also graduated from the university in May of 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Statistics. His work in the Office for Inclusion and Diversity includes cleaning institutional data sets, enrollment projection and producing quantitative reports on race, ethnicity, and gender by university unit. In his free time he plays basketball, hangs out with friends, and engages in continuous learning opportunities.
Jamelle Simmons, Ph.D.
Jamalle is the Associate Director for Diversity and Inclusion for both the College of Science and the Office for Inclusion and Diversity. He received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Biomedical Engineering with a research focus in evaluating and modeling therapeutic approaches in autism spectrum disorder. In addition to research, Jamelle is involved in student mentoring and outreach to middle school students in rural communities to help increase their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Chantel Simpson, Ph.D.
Chantel currently serves as program manager of the Black College Institute and assists OID and SOAR projects. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, she worked as a high school science teacher. Chantel is passionate about working with students to enhance student access and success to agriculture and STEM sciences. Her research interests include focusing on the ways in which students problem solve to overcome educational barriers and working to develop student retention strategies. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and painting.
Kojo Akrong
I am a rising sophomore from Richmond, Virginia. I plan to major in Electrical Engineering and minor in Business Leadership. In my spare time, I like to watch Netflix, play soccer and hang out with friends. My major goal for the future is to travel the world and help develop sustainable renewable energy.
Tayah Andrews
I am currently a senior studying Biochemistry with a minor in Chemistry. Upon graduation, I intend to go to graduate school to obtain a Masters of Management in Science and then a Masters of Business Administration. I am the president of Surge Campus Ministries which helps foster a safe community for college students and young professionals to explore the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am also a Howard Hughes Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion at Virginia Tech. My hobbies include singing, napping, cooking, and working out.

Leemar Thorpe
A graduate of North Carolina Central University with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communications and Radford University with Masters of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. He has worked at Virginia Tech, promoting and advancing diversity, for the past 8 years. Prior to his position with the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, he was a program manager for two Virginia Tech - NIH funded programs that focused on underrepresented students in the biomedical and behavorial sciences. He is currently the Director of Operations in the Office of Inclusion and Diversity.
Stacey Wilkerson
Stacey Wilkerson is a doctoral candidate in Higher Education Administration at Virginia Tech. Her research interests include access, retention, and degree attainment for underrepresented minoritized students and first-generation students. She is also especially interested in the history of higher education in the United States. Stacey has experiences working with first-year initiatives, Title IX, crisis management, retention, student success, and large scale programming. In her time outside of the classroom, she enjoys being outdoors and playing ball with her dog. Stacey plans to finish her Ph.D. in May, 2020.
Arielle Boykin
I am a rising senior studying Criminology, Sociology, and Pyschology. I am involved with many organizations on campus, but I am most enthusiastic about launching the first natural hair organization next semester at Virginia Tech. My future goal is to get a job with a secret agency like the FBI or CIA. In my free time, I love to watch crime shows, spend time with family and friends, and workout so I can eat all the food I want!
Elysia Budu
I am currently a rising senior double majoring in History (Research/Thesis) and Political Science (National Security) with a minor in War and Society. I plan to graduate in the Spring of 2020 with a dual degree in my majors and get duel Masters degrees in History and Higher Education in the Spring of 2022. My dream job is to teach History at a University. My favorite part of my majors are working on projects that will either be displayed on campus or presented in Congress. In my free time you can catch me watching The Office and painting, cooking, or chatting on the phone with my family.
I am currently a rising sophomore with a passion for science, math, Netflix, food and traveling. At Virginia Tech I am studying Computational Neuroscience and Spanish with hopes of studying abroad in Spain before I graduate. This will be my first year as a student staff leader and I am super excited to work with everyone this summer!

Nyheim Foster
I am a rising senior double majoring in Political Science (legal studies option) and Criminology. Upon completion of my undergraduate career, I have plans to take one gap year prior to enrolling in law school. My top three law schools (in no particular order) are Georgetown University, William and Mary, and University of Richmond. I am a Yates Scholar for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in which during breaks I go back to my hometown (Norfolk, VA) to talk to current high school students about why I chose Virginia Tech and to give them insight to the university. During my minimal free time, you can find me in the Black Cultural Center on campus or at home with my dog watching Netflix.

I am a recent Virginia Tech graduate, with a degree in Sociology and Criminology. This summer I will be an incoming Graduate Student - pursuing a Master of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Business Analytics (MSBA-BA). Throughout my tenure, I have gained more interest in helping people and problem solving. That said, I would love to become a Risk Advisory Consultant after receiving my MBA. I am a New York native, who has interest in Real Estate, Day Trading, Diversity in Higher Education, Legal Studies, and much more. I am also a former Women’s Basketball Player for Virginia Tech.

I am from Ringgold, Virginia where I graduated from Dan River High School. Now, I am a rising junior at Virginia Tech studying International Relations, Criminology, and Italian. After graduation, I plan on gaining work experience and enrolling in graduate school. I am currently an intramural sports official for Virginia Tech recreational sports, and I also work closely with TRiO Upward Bound program we have at Virginia Tech. I volunteer with the Salvation Army and God’s Storehouse in my hometown. In my spare time, I like to write, hang out with friends, and watch videos.
Diamond Gilliam
I am a rising sophomore with a passion for poetry, ghost writing, sleeping, and learning at Virginia Tech. My mission in life is to fight for peace and equality. Community building is essential to me because I come from a big family of nine children, in which we are all very close and tight knit. I plan to become a defense attorney for the Navy, however I plan to take my practices back to my community and serve as a lawyer that fights for civil injustice along the basis of race and discrimination. I am all for striving and giving back to my people or people in general. From this experience I hope to help myself grow as well as help others tap into higher understanding of themselves.

I am a rising senior majoring in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. After graduating, I plan to take a gap year and gain some experience before applying to Physical Therapy school. This past school year was my first year being a resident advisor and I absolutely love building relationships with my residents. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching sports, and spending quality with friends.
I am a current senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in Packaging Systems and Design. My hometown is Newport News, Virginia, where I attended a secondary school, An Acheivable Dream Academy. I am the current president of the Sneaker Club at Virginia Tech. I am also the father to a rambunctious five-year-old, Jaiden. In my spare time I enjoy photography, music, fashion, and design. I am an undergraduate student seeking a dual degree in Public Relations and Consumer Studies. I’m a senior receiving a second degree this upcoming year. After graduation, I plan to go to graduate school. This will be my third year as a student staff leader for the Black College Institute Program and I’m very excited to meet the new students. I am currently a senior majoring in Spanish Literature and Computer Science. I am also part of the Drone Park team, where I lead the Drone Repair Program. My post-graduate plans include Graduate school here at Tech, doing research for the Mid Atlantic Aviation Partnership at the CRC. Some of my hobbies include: lifting weights, dancing, and music. I also love to binge watch new shows on Netflix. I also love meeting new people and hearing their stories, so if you see me come talk to me.
Tosin Ogunmayowa
I am a third year Ph.D. student in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech. Presently, I teach and coordinate undergraduate soils lab. Before coming to Virginia Tech, I lectured and served as academic advisor to undergraduate students and provided mentorship that helped them to improve on their academic performance. I am thrilled whenever I see underrepresented and underserved students succeed academically and professionally and I feel fulfilled whenever I have the opportunity to serve them. I am also so glad for another opportunity to serve as a student staff leader of the Black College Institute. In my free time I enjoy playing soccer, musicking and traveling.

Hi! I am a currently a junior majoring in Marketing and minoring in International Business. I love learning about other cultures and eventually hope to travel the world. NaZhere Singleton
I am currently a computer engineer who loves creation and starting something from scratch. My hobbies include playing call of duty, painting, digital art, shoe customization, building PC’s, going to the gym, and playing sports (football and basketball). I am also on the E-board for SAAB (Student African American Brotherhood), an organization which serves to improve and nurture the black male community on campus.
Matias Montenegro
I am originally from Lima, Peru, but was raised in Fairfax, VA for the majority of my childhood. I am currently an undergraduate student in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies majoring in architecture. I plan on developing and honing my design skills throughout my time at Tech, and hope to create beautiful spaces and forms for everyone to experience. In addition to school, I am currently an intern at SOAR (Student Opportunities and Achievements Resource program) and I want to create and give a stronger voice to those who need it. In my free time, I love listening to BTS, working out, and being creative.

I am a recent graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in Animal and Poultry Sciences. I will be pursuing my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine this upcoming cycle. As an undergraduate, I was highly involved in many organizations that all revolve around giving back to the community such as Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), Student African-American Sisterhood (SAAS), Hokie Ambassadors, Black Student Alliance, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
