Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Borromeo Unity Day “In Thanksgiving to God for blessing us with a generous and loving parish family and for uniting us to share in

our Lord’s Most Precious Body and Blood. Amen.” I heard and could feel how everyone was so uplifted who joined in the Unity Day Mass and BBQ—almost 700 people all mixing and getting to know different people– each of whom are a blessing/gift from God to us all. And what a blessing the weather was! (Now we just ask Sister Raquel to pray for good weather.) A real eye opener was when Father Don listed the 21 countries members of our Borromeo Family were born in: Brazil Chile China Columbia Dominican Republic El Salvador Finland Germany Guatemala Honduras India Italy Mexico Panama Philippines Poland Puerto Rico Russia USA Venezuela Vietnam A huge thank you from my heart to each one of us who pray and work to bring greater unity to our beauti-ful Borromeo family. A huge debt of thanks to so many people who gave freely and graciously of their time in the preparation and fulfillment of our Unity Day cele-bration, especially our leader Brenda Galloy and so many others who helped so generously and joyfully:

Joke of the Week

A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a ques-tion, “Boys and girls, what do we know about God?” A hand shot up in the air, “He is an artist!” said the kinder-garten boy. “Really? How do you know?” the teacher asked. “You know—Our Father, who does art in heaven…”

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

Gospel Reflection for Families All parents want the very best for their children! They willingly make sacrifices to provide the best opportunities for our children. They might sacrifice a career to stay at home with their children, or they might take on an extra job to save for college tuition. Parents often wish we could take the illness or discomfort from their children. They cannot stand to see their children suffer. Today’s Gospel cautions us to do that very thing. Like parents, we must give of ourselves for others. Remember, the best way to show each other how to live is by our example. Adults:

What is one thing that I can do every day this week to show others that Jesus is the Messiah?

Children: What can I do this week to be a friend to someone who really needs one?

When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to deny ourselves some things so that we can share our blessings as God in-tended them to be shared.

We pray that in remembering that absolutely everything we have is a gift from God, we may willingly share our gifts in ways that are pleasing to our Heavenly Father.

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 16, 2012

St. Charles Borromeo Religious Education Dear Parishioners,

We had a wonderful Unity Day Mass and celebration in the park. We see God Alive in our community as we share peace and break bread together. Thank you to all the catechists, parents, and students who contributed to the success of this day.

We do have room for your three or four year old who doesn’t wear diapers, and for your 5 year old who is not yet in kindergarten in our Sunday Pre-School, held during the 8:30 Mass . The children have a wonderful, prayer-filled, Spirit-led experience of Jesus on their level, while parents attend Mass! Classes meet in the school during the 8:30 Mass

We also have room for Kindergarten children who attend public school. For both these pro-grams, registration forms are available from the parish website, www.borromeoparish.com, and then select the Religious Education tab on the left hand side of our home page.

Confirmation students and parents are reminded of the mandatory Mass and workshop next Sunday, September 23. We will join together at the 8:30 Mass followed by the workshop for students and parents in the Cafeteria beginning at 10 am and lasting until 11:15.

Our RCIA program is off to a wonderful start; we meet on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm in the school. The calendar and session details are available on our parish website. RCIA is for those inter-ested in learning more about our faith, whether they are already Catholic and want to learn more, or grew up Catholic and want a refresher, and certainly for those people who are not Catholic and want to learn more about the Church’s teachings. All are welcome!

Women’s Fellowship continues to meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays 6 am to 8 am in the Church Office. We are beginning to look for our next study, so if you haven’t joined us, now is a great time to start. Come as you are! No makeup, no lipstick, no coffee? No problem. We will meet again on September 22 and October 13 and look forward to seeing you!

Peace be with you, Mrs. Becca McCullough

St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners:

This is the year for our faculty to review and revise our Reading curriculum. We look at many sources as we study our current goals and objectives for reading. Then we make any revisions necessary to ensure that we provide our students with an up-to-date and challenging curriculum. Our students in grades 3-8 will be taking the ITBS tests this week. The test has been newly revised, too. When the results are received, our work as a faculty is to learn to interpret them correctly. I ask you to pray for our students this week to do their best in taking the tests! The virtue we will be working on is perse-verance—to keep at the task until it is completed!

The words of Jesus in today’s Gospel can be hard to take. Is there any one of us who wants to suffer? Probably not, yet that is exactly what Jesus tells us to do. I think about explaining this to children. When the concept is framed along the lines that there is someone who is worse off than we are, it does help make the picture clearer. This is why we continue to have monthly charitable collections. The teachers encourage the students to bear with one another and life’s inconven-iences every day. We pray that your life will be filled with grace, even in times of trouble.

Thanks for your prayers for our school!

God bless, Mrs. Hoffman

Irishman of the Year The County Saint Charles Ancient Order of Hibernians is proud to announce that Father John Reiker has been selected as our “Irishman of the Year.” He will be honored at our Annual Green Tie Dinner on Wednes-day, September 19 at the All Occasion Banquet Center, 111 Compass Point Dr., St. Charles. All are welcome to this event. The cost is $25 per person which includes an “OPEN BAR.” The doors open at 6:30pm.

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 16, 2012

Eucharistic Adoration All Current & New Adorers

I am updating the schedule for Eucharistic Adoration and would greatly appreciate all current, as well as new, people who would like to be on the Eucharistic Adoration Schedule to sign up. You may sign up one of two ways: 1) Go online at www.mysignup.com/ea and sign up for the hour you would like to commit to, or 2) call Carol at 928-6722 and leave a message for the hour you would like. Please sign up whether you are currently on the schedule or are new. Eucharistic Adoration is in the church on the 3rd Monday of every month begin-

ning after the 8am Mass and concluding prior to Benediction at 6:30pm.

Some people are hesitant to sign up because they do not know what is expected of them—or what they are supposed to do at Eucharistic Adoration. The answer is simple—this is your time to connect with Jesus how you see fit. Some people read the Bible, same say the rosary quietly to themselves, some read other spiritual/religious books, and some sit quietly with the Lord. It’s your hour to spend quietly with the Lord in the way that works best for you!

“Borromeo-Bound” A Transportation Ministry of SCB

Occasionally one of our parishioners is in need of a ride to church on Sunday. We have some parishioners who would be willing to pick someone up on their way to Mass. Now, we’d like to get you connected!

If you are in occasional need of a ride to church OR

if you can bring someone to church now and then, please get in touch with Jeff Prinster, 314-368-7768, or [email protected]. Any questions, please give Jeff a call.

For Our Homebound Members If you are homebound, or if you know of someone in our parish, who cannot get to church regularly and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, some of our Eucharistic Ministers would be happy to offer Communion. One of our priests would visit first, then we would put one of our Communion Ministers to the Sick in touch with you to make arrangements for future visits. Please call the church office if you are interested or for more information—946-1893.

A hearty THANKS to everyone who helped make the BLOOD DRIVE a success—the cooks—the bakers—the helpers—the students and the DONORS!! We saw 27 people and collected 25 units of blood which means that the school will receive $255 for their efforts in making this happen. Our next blood drive will be November 22—mark the date. The school gets $250 if they get 20 donors and then $1 for each unit above that. God bless you all!!! CJM has been providing safe volunteer opportunities to serve prisoners for over 30 years. Sr. Rose Rita Huelsmann SSND will explain the many ways to safely become involved in prison ministry including pen palling and through direct service by providing basic necessities like soap, socks, toothpaste to recently released prisoners through SVDP’s Welcome Backpacks.

Being a Pen Pal – Making a Difference

“Never in a million years would I have imagined writing to an inmate in prison. Yet through a series of ‘coincidences’ (which I came to realize was actually God speaking to me) I felt called to do so. It has been a privilege and a joy (touched with some sadness) to make friends with my pen pal. When I wrote my very first letter to him I had so many reservations. What could I possibly write? Could there be any way that we could have anything in common? I feared the worst of him – after all, he was in prison!

“But it didn’t take long for me to discover that he was like me in many ways. He had doubts, fears, regrets and sor-rows….but hopes, dreams, love and laughter, too. After writing my friend for a year and a half, I went to visit him for the first time and found him to be a warm human being; courteous and thoughtful. Despite his circumstances he is always cheerful when I see him. I know by the big smile he gives me that he is truly happy and grateful to see me. He has had his hardships, too; but who doesn’t? “Thank you for remembering that I am a human being, and treating me like one,” he once said. And I will never forget that.

“I would encourage anyone who has ever wondered if writing to someone in prison might be for them, to give it a try. You can make such a difference in the life of someone who may have no one else. It takes no special training or knowledge. Just be yourself. God can use YOU to show an inmate that He has not forgotten them – that He loves them and cares for them. How awesome is that!!!”
