obligatory charming princes becoming objects of ridicule and envy from the ensemble. A highlight is the “dying swan” number from Swan Lake in which a Trock soloist struggles with the bird’s final wheezing breaths as feathers fly off his tutu and he draws out the death scene in one loony feat of hogging the spotlight. The dancers dish on the inconsistencies of ballet that make their company a necessity. The high art sensibility of dance, for example, frequently demands a certain “type” (ie: petite white women) for lead roles while male dancers vie for her affection. One interviewee, the lead for a more traditional company, points out that he always plays Prince Charming going after the girl and that his success depends on repeating a role that is wildly inconsistent with his own life. Hart makes a notable effort to highlight the cultural diversity within the company as she talks with Trocks from around the world who have flocked to join the company. Dancers from Italy and Cuba, for example, share stories about finding comfort in this surrogate family when opportunities for them to be out and on stage didn’t fly back home. At the same time, Hart highlights the relationships that form within the company as two dancers ready for marriage and become the third couple among the Trocks to wed. Artist director Tory Dobrin notes that the trio of marriages within the company is a feat he didn’t expect to see in his lifetime. They’re encouraging signs of social progress that’s developed as the Trocks continue to hit their stride with audiences. Hart does an admirable job of approaching the company from multiple angles to create an inclusive doc portrait. Interviews with the dancers’ parents are especially touching as Rebels on Pointe builds to the reunion of one family that’s been separated for far too long. Hart buoys the film with a light sense of humor and charm that comes easily when the subject’s mission is to make audiences have a good time. The dancers of Rebels on Pointe are good company for any audience.

Truman Narrative | English/Spanish (subtitles) | 2015 | 108 min.Director: Cesc GayDiagnosed with terminal cancer, Julián (Ricardo Darín) has decided to forgo treatment, and spend his final days tying up loose ends. When child-hood friend Tomás (Javier Cámara) pays his ail-ing friend an unexpected visit, he quickly realizes he won’t be able to change his mind. In what will be their final reunion, the two friends set out to finalize Julián’s funeral arrangements, settle his accounts and, most importantly, find a home for his beloved dog, Truman, in this heartfelt and surprisingly humorous film.

ChavelaDoc | English/Spanish (subtitles) | 2017 | 90 min.Directors: Catherine Gund, Daresha KyiThrough its lyrical structure, Chavela takes viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the iconoclastic life of the leg-endary lesbian ranchera singer Chavela Vargas. Centered around never before-seen interview footage of Chavela and guided by the stories in her songs, and the myths and tales others told about her—as well as those she spread about herself—the film weaves an arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak, sing, and dream her unique life into being.

CHILE/UK/FRANCE

Endless PoetryNarrative | Spanish/French/English (subtitles) | 2016 | 128 min.Director: Alejandro JodorowskyEndless Poetry details El Topo director Jodorows-ky’s life from the time he left the Chilean coastal town of Tocopilla and his authoritarian father for Santiago at the age of nine, through his decision to move to France and live the life of a poet when he was in his 20s. Told through Jodorowsky’s unique surreal and psychedelic visual language, Endless Poetry is an ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth as a universal force capable of changing one’s life forever.

USA

No Man’s LandDoc | English | 2017 | 81 min.Director: David ByarsIn January 2016, armed protestors in Oregon oc-cupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to call attention to what they felt was an intrusion by the federal government. One screening only, with an appearance by director David Byars!

USA

Bending the ArcDoc | English | 2017 | 102 min. Directors: Kief Davidson, Pedro KosThirty years ago, a group of improbable heroes including Dr. Paul Farmer and Dr. Jim Young Kim came together on a daring mission to make qual-ity healthcare available to everyone, even in the world’s poorest countries. Fighting entrenched diseases, political and bureaucratic machinery, and the charity-industrial complex itself, these crusaders forced the international community to embrace the idea that health care must be a basic human right.

RUSSIA

The StudentNarrative | Russian (subtitles) | 2016 | 118 min.Director: Kirill SerebrennikovTeenaged Venya grows confident that his strict and rigorous study of the Bible gives him the ability to manipulate all forms of authority. Chal-lenged by a teacher who refuses to consent to his dogma, he sets out to eliminate her and subdue an entire community. At a time when ar-guments over the teaching of religion in public schools are prominent in the media, this wildly escalating classroom drama serves as a fright-ening cautionary tale.

CANADA/USA

Rebels on PointeDocumentary | English | 2017 | 90 min.Director: Bobbi Jo HartRebels on Pointe follows Les Ballets Trockade-ro de Monte Carlo—the all male, drag ballet company founded over 40 years ago on the heels of New York’s Stonewall riots. Montreal-based director and SOU alumnus Bobbi Jo Hart will attend the film on opening night.

BELGIUM/FRANCE/LEBANON

In SyriaNarrative | Arabic (subtitles) | 2017 | 85 min.Director: Philippe Van LeeuwTrapped inside her house in a city under siege, Oum Yazan, mother of three, turned her flat into a safe harbor for her family and neighbors, try-ing to protect them from the war outside. When bombs threaten to destroy the building, when snipers turn the courtyards into deadly zones, and burglars break in to claim their dreadful bounties, maintaining the thin balance of rou-tine inside the walls becomes a matter of life and death.

THAILAND/SINGAPORE

Pop AyeNarrative | Thai (subtitles) |2017 | 102 min.Director: Kirsten TanPop Aye is the story of a Bangkok architect whose late-midlife crisis leads him to an en-counter with the elephant, Popeye, with whom he spent an idyllic childhood in the Thai coun-tryside. Together they embark on a road trip to deliver both man and beast to their origins. Popeye is the center of a mysterious, funny and often absurd universe that, while seem-ingly particular to Thailand is, ultimately, not unlike our own.

SLOVAKIA/CZECK REPUBLI

The TeacherNarrative | Slovak (subtitles) | 2016 | 102 min.Director: Jan HrebejkA new teacher, Maria Drazdechova, arrives in a middle school classroom in Bratislava in 1983. It slowly becomes clear that perhaps the pupils’ grades are related to how willing their guardians are to helping out with her errands, her house-cleaning, and other random services. After one of the students attempts suicide, however, the director of the school calls for an emergency par-ents’ meeting to remove the teacher, but because Ms. Drazdechova is also a high-ranking official of the Communist Party, parents are fearful.
