It is up to the registrant to fix the registered weight depending on intended use (and the capacity of the vehicle as set by the manufacturer). It is a violation of law to operate a vehicle beyond its “registered gross weight.”

Late Excise Tax Payments: If a registrant is delinquent on excise tax payments to his/her local city/town, he/she must pay the Registry a $20 fee in addition to the excise tax payment (to the city/town) in order to have the non-renew status removed from the registration.

Registration and/or Plate Cancellation Fee: The fee to cancel an individual plate is $25. There is no charge to cancel an entire registration.

By law, the RMV is required to collect the fees for the transactions listed in this Chart. Most fees are set (or amended) by regulation as issued by the Executive Office for Administration and Finance at 801 Code of Massachusetts Regulation (CMR) 4.02. Some fees are set directly by statute, usually in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 90, Section 33.
