A reading from the Book of Proverbs Prv 9:1-6

Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven columns; she has dressed her meat, mixed

her wine, yes, she has spread her table. She has sent out her maidens; she calls from the heights

out over the city: "Let whoever is simple turn in here; To the one who lacks understanding, she

says, Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed! Forsake foolishness that you may

live; advance in the way of understanding."

The Word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 34:2-7

R./ Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD;

the lowly will hear me and be glad. R./

Glorify the LORD with me, let us together extol his name. I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. R./

Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. When the poor one called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. R./

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians Eph 5:15-20

Brothers and sisters: Watch carefully how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, making the

most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not continue in ignorance,

but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and

spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for

everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

The Word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia, Alleluia. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him,

says the Lord.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Jn 6:51-58 Jesus said to the crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wisdom is a quality that appears to be sorely lacking in our society today. Sometimes it seems that our leaders are promoting action after action that is the exact opposite of wise or good. How can our faith survive when so much around us seems to be pulling in the opposite direction? Our readings today encourage us to seek wisdom and learn how to apply it in our own lives and in the world around us. Wisdom (in the first reading) says, "Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding." Our second reading urges that we "do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord." Jesus teaches that "the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." For the sake of the life of our world, we must be willing to grow into wisdom. TASTE AND SEE Wisdom is often identified with Christ and with the Holy Spirit. Both are present in today's readings, one as a metaphor, the other as a doctrine. "To the one who lacks understanding, [Wisdom] says, Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed!" She urges us, "Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding." Jesus urges us to be united with him in an intimate way in his flesh and blood in the Eucharist. We are blessed with the quality of wisdom, if only we recognize this and welcome our Lord into our hearts. WELCOME ME AND LIVE "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" In those days, before our understanding of the Eucharist, before the Last Supper when Jesus offered himself to his disciples in the bread and wine, this may have been a reasonable theological question, as well as a logical one. They did not understand. They did not have the wisdom to see the metaphor, or to know that further understanding would be forthcoming. But to those who were open to Jesus' words, the bread of life was offered and accepted as the way to life eternal. They may not have understood that Jesus was speaking of eternal life, not our physical life on Earth, that would be given forever, but they were captivated by the metaphor and believed. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life." It is possible to be puzzled and still believe. So what does this mean for us today? Wisdom is something we sorely need in our world, and it is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Partaking of the Body and Blood of the Lord is to gain wisdom as well as eternal life, to participate in the life of God, the Trinity, and of each other in love and caring. We must abandon our foolish ways and believe.

Salve Regina

Mary as Queen of Heaven is praised in the Salve Regina "(Hail Queen)", which is sung in the time from Trinity Sunday

until the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. In the vernacular, as a prayer to the Virgin Mary, the Hail Holy Queen is the final prayer of the Rosary.

A German Benedictine monk, Hermann of Reichenau (1013– 1054), allegedly composed it and it originally appeared in Latin, the prevalent language of the Catholic Church.

Traditionally it has been sung in Latin, though many translations exist. In the Middle Ages, Salve Regina offices were held every Saturday. In the 13th century, the custom developed to greet the Queen of Heaven with the Salve Regina, which is considered the oldest of the four Marian antiphons. As a part of the Catholic Reformation, the Salve Regina was prayed every Saturday by members of the Sodality of Our Lady, a Jesuit Marian congregation. The Hail Holy Queen is also the final prayer of the Rosary.
