With a swift turn of a calendar
page (or a simple touch on your
smart phone), a new season is
upon us. As September ap-
proaches we look forward to
both new beginnings and the
return to a familiar routine—
perhaps with some the same sort
of anticipation as we have felt
on the first day of a new year in school.
On September 9th we celebrate Rally Day once
again—and church school classes and our regular wor-
ship schedule resume for the fall. With thanksgiving,
most of our Church School teachers will be returning
to their ministry, as we give thanks for new faces join-
ing our Christian Education leadership (see page 3).
Pastor Randy and his family continue their Sabbatical
through the middle of October, and so even as familiar
clergy lead us in worship, we likewise welcome the
leadership of friends from our Sister Church in Malawi
(September 16) and Rabbi Aaron Bisno (September
30) to our 11 AM Worship.
With the old and new weaving together, we form a
strong chord of fellowship, education and praise this
fall.
This “Special Edition” of the Reaching Out will high-
light September’s upcoming events, so that you can
plan ahead and join in the excitement. Read about
Rally Day events, Church School offerings, our Church
Picnic, and new Christian Education and Youth Minis-
try staff. Refresh yourself on our Child Safety Policies
and learn how you can schedule childcare for your spe-
cial event...And then prayerfully consider participating
in these offerings so that you might be renewed, re-
freshed, and reinvigorated this fall through the renew-
ing of your mind and the nurturing of your spirit—and
through our fellowship together.

ADULT CLASSES
►Parenting Circle ………………………………………………….………...…First Floor – Harambe Room
Facilitators: Maria Englehardt and Pam Walaski This fall Parenting Circle will be exploring families—in all various combinations and iterations that make the larger
ELPC family such a welcoming and inclusive place. Our focus will be on how various families are created, function and
live out the plan God has for their lives. Each week we will provide an essay, blog, podcast or video to jumpstart our con-
versation and see where it takes us. We will also have a short mini-theme of marriage that will span several weeks. This
year’s Co-Leaders will be Pam Walaski and Maria Engelhardt. They invite you to join us and share your family with the
group. Ideas and suggestions for weekly topics are welcomed. Contact Pam—[email protected] or Maria—
Sept. 9th—Rally Day—first day of class
►Journey with Scripture Class………………………………...……...……….….…Second Floor Library
Facilitators: Jan Lyle Irvin, M.A. (Biblical Studies) Come and read scripture together. We read the Revised Common Lectionary selections while providing time for
reflection and response. We read together for many reasons: for the sake of God and the Reign of God; to recognize how
we are loved, questioned, commanded and transformed by God; to journey towards a community of vision, imagination,
justice and steadfast love.
Sept. 9th— Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23; Psalm 125; James 2:1-10 (11-13), 14-17; Mark 7:24-37
►Contemporaries Class ……………..…………………………….……………..….…Second Floor Parlor
Facilitators: Joe Kennedy and Mary Alice Lightle The Contemporaries are an intergenerational fellowship of Christians seeking to live faithfully in the 21st Century.
We encourage one another to grow spiritually and carry out ministries of compassion and justice. All are welcome!
Sept. 9th—Set Up For A Blessing—led by Joe Kennedy
Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz provide a treasure of guidelines for the manner in which we are nurtured toward blessing
through their book, God Is In The Small Stuff. Attention-to-detail in the day-to-day activities of life can place us closer to
God’s presence, even in the midst of chaos! When God prompts us to do the little things, He is never trying to take any-
thing away from us. Our Lord is constantly setting us up for a blessing. Discovering God in the small stuff is the first step
toward trusting Jesus to guide us through the larger spiritual issues that accompany our journey of faith.
►Seekers Class ………………………….…………………….……………………Second Floor – Room 234
Facilitator: Gwen Puza The Seekers wish to grow in religious understanding, insight, faith and practice. Seekers classes create a space for
spiritual, intellectual and experiential exploration. Participants have been interested in theological breadth, interfaith un-
derstanding, psychological and religious development and progressive Christian activism. Together we seek a broad, in-
clusive dialogue, experience and theology. All viewpoints are welcome an encouraged at our classes.
Sept. 9th—PC(USA) Mission Co-Worker Cheona Stock (ELPC member) will be here to share her experiences as a Mis-
sion Co-Worker in Bolivia this past year, as part of for the Joining Hands Bolivian Network. Come and hear about the
activities and efforts of this network. They work to raise awareness and to create campaigns for water rights, a precious
resource so often exploited and contaminated in this region, particularly by mining operations.
►Soul Food Class …………….…………………………………………………Pastor’s Conference Room
Facilitators: Joe Hajdu On Rally Day, Sept. 9th, we will have a welcoming and gathering session (new participants welcome!), and from
September 16 through October 7th we will read and discuss the four selections on prayer and service found on pages 197-
224 of Spiritual Classics (extra copies of the readings will be available). During September we will also decide what book
we will be using beginning October 21 (there will be a combined adult class on October 14th).
►Spanish Class ………………..……………………………………………………………….……Room 217
Facilitators: Joaquin Anabe Lopez Sept. 11th—El estudio bíblico en español continuará este año.

Keeping our Kids Safe In April, 2010, ELPC’s Session adopted a set of policies that strive to ensure that ELPC is a safe haven for all children and youth who en-ter the Cathedral of Hope, even as we affirm our commitment to extend the hospitality, mercy and love of Christ to all of God’s people. In order for our policies to be effective in protecting our children, we need your cooperation. Parents and Guardians of children who worship, learn, and enjoy the activities offered at ELPC are key partners in our efforts to create a Safe Sanctuary for the most vulner-able among us. We encourage you to review or request a copy of our complete Child Safety Policy at any time. There are also handouts by the front desk that highlights important points for specific groups who are a part of our ELPC community. Here are a few highlights for you to remember:
• Every child or youth age 18 (through grade 12) or under must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or an
adult approved as a caregiver according to the Child Safety Policy. If an adult has a meeting at ELPC, they may take their child to their meeting or pre-arrange childcare by contacting Gloria Knopp.
• Children may not be left unattended in the Harambe Room, at the Guard’s Desk, in the Library, or any other space on ELPC grounds.
• Children in grade 5 or under must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or older sibling to classrooms, programs or the restrooms at ELPC. Youth in grade 6 or older may transition between events on their own.
• Parents or guardians are asked to complete a registration form so that we have current contact information for your family on record.
• Parents are asked to notify ELPC staff and volunteers as to who is authorized to pick up your child from an event, and if your child
has special permission to walk or take the bus on their own home from ELPC events. (This may be listed on the Registration or Permission forms).
• Children who attend Extended Session must bring a “ticket” with them (found in the sanctuary) to introduce your child to rotational volunteers.
• All volunteers who work directly with children and youth will complete Act 33/34 Clearances, and PA Child Abuse clearances – for
which ELPC will pay.
• ELPC will provide policies & training for all ELPC staff, volunteers and the staff of all agencies using this space to raise awareness
about our Child Safety policies. Please feel free to contact our Business Administrator, Pam Kimmel (412-441-3800 x18), or our Associate Pastor, The Rev. Heather Schoenewolf (412-441-3800 x21) if you have any questions.
Childcare: ELPC offers childcare weekly—on Sundays from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM and on Wednesday evenings from
6:45-8:15 PM. We have a dedicated staff who are committed to nurturing your child’s personal and spiritual growth in the
safety of our faith community. Our childcare workers are Jane Anabe, Candess Ward and Candice Zawoiski. Each of
these women has a professional and educational background in Education and/or Christian Education. Childcare is offered in
the Nursery Suite, off of the Harambe Room (immediately across from the Security/Hospitality Desk). Childcare can also be
arranged for any function sponsored by an ELPC committee, with two week’s notice. Please speak with Pastor Heather for
more details.
Extended Session: After the Moments with the Children during the 11 am Sanctuary service, a children’s ministry is
offered with songs, Bible or mission stories, prayer, sharing and creative activities. A simple snack is served. In an effort to
best know and care for your child, we ask that all families fill out a green Extended Session “Ticket” and that your child bring
it with him/her to Extended Session every week.
* Young Children's Ministry for infants—toddlers (up to age 3) — First Floor Nursery.
* Pre-school age children (through grade 1) — Room 240.
Sara Hackett, Interim Coordinator for Christian Education and Youth Ministries will be coordinating volunteers
for the year. Please contact her at (412-441-3800 x20) if you are interested in volunteering or in learn-ing more about Extended Session.
