Thursday, October 25, 2012 (Continued)The Union Agreement Says What?! How to Get the Job Done without Labor Problems 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Construction projects are complex. They require financing, con-tracts, plan checks, permits, materials, scheduling & working with a lot of people! Most of those people will be craftspersons and how well they perform can make or break a job. Union contrac-tors generally have the luxury of a pool of skilled workers and labor agreements are part of the package. This hour long semi-nar will summarize the major points of common union agree-ments and give practical suggestions for how to navigate them. It will conclude with an interactive discussion and scenario where you are the site superintendent and think you need to fire a craftsperson. Grab your hardhat, this is real life!

California Construction Law: What’s New in Project Delivery and Mechanic’s Liens? 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. On time, on budget construction happens in a legal framework whose bookends are the chosen project delivery method, which allocates risk, and the law of mechanics liens, which provides some security for payment. There are changes in how some California owners and contracts are structuring their agree-ments and how they allocate project risks. At the same time, the California legislature has recently overhauled and amended the law of mechanics liens. This seminar will provide background and context to help you evaluate changes that are happening in project delivery methods. It will also provide an update on recent changes in the law and suggest best practices for avoiding disputes.

Safety & Health Council Meeting11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.Please join us during the Safety and Health Council meeting for the seminar, Contractual Risk Transfer. Risk transfer is the trans-fer of financial consequences of liability to another. On construc-tion projects, contractors frequently clarify and shift responsibili-ties, duties and rights by means of contracts. Do you know what you are signing, understand risk transfer mechanisms you should be requiring from others, have pre-qualification requirements for subcontracts or an efficient system in place for tracking policies? If you answered “no” to any of these questions this workshop is for you. Learn what you can do to protect our company from significant exposure to liability involving your contracted work and the work of others.

Fall Conference Activities (Continued)

Eric has worked as a public works investigator, a mediation deputy, a hearing officer and a regional manager for DLSE. He will bring an extensive understanding and a unique perspective to discussions regarding labor compliance. ArchiCAD – Revit Structure Workflow 1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. This seminar introduces how architects - using ArchiCAD, and engineers/construction project managers - using Revit Structure can exchange design information as well as manage changes by implementing the “Open-BIM approach” in their practice. Interactive teachings will include a free trial download for attendees to participate and follow along on their laptops and work directly with presenters in a hands-on environment.

The Building Division will offer a panel discussion on the production, financial and legal pitfalls of new technology. Will 7D modeling, BIM, Lean, Green Construction, and mobile apps become the next great wave of hurtles to a successful project? This very informative session is one you cannot miss!

Joint Engineering Division Meeting 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. How secured is the funding of your current project? Will infrastructure projects ever have sustainable funding? The Joint Engineering Division will address these very critical issues for Heavy Civil contractors. Is P3 the answer to all funding shortfall? These questions and the role of California Transportation Foundation will be fully discussed.

Best Practices for CPM Schedulers 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Are you using best practices to improve your project schedule’s quality and ease of maintenance? Have you communicated these methods to your team? Are your team members leveraging these methods? The focus of this seminar is the use of best practices and communication of these tools across your company’s entire scheduling team. Internal schedule trainings, reviews, and coach-ing are keys to instituting the use of best practices, maintaining the communication of best practices and continuing the cycle. Are you preparing your team to succeed on game day?

Connecting with Local High School Career Tech Ed (CTE) and Regional Occupational Centers/ Programs11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. If you are looking to expand your company, AGC District or AGC Student Chapter outreach to include high school students, you should be connecting with your local CTE and ROCP programs. This seminar will help you to do just that by providing information on what and where CTE and ROCP programs are, who to contact and how you might create a partnership. Be part of propelling the construction industry into the future!

State Board of Directors & Annual Meeting 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Fall State Board of Directors meeting will bring AGC’s leader-ship together to filter, examine and drive the Associations ongoing and emerging strategies. Summaries of the various divisions, dis-tricts, committees, and councils will be brought before the board as the governing body of AGC. As California continues to struggle on many fronts, never before has the need for sustainable ideas, action plans, and unity been as important to the Association as it is now. This meeting and the decisions which come out of it serve as a guide in the Associations representation of its members.

“A Hard Day’s Night” Reception & Dinner 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - Reception 7:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. - Dinner and Entertainment Are you ready to relive the classic rock experience of the Beatles! Friday, October 26, 2012 BIM: Taking it Beyond the Basics to Industry Best Practices 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. We have all heard about the use of Building Information Model-ing System (BIM). While the programs for this technology have been around for awhile, for the past few years, the industry has been focusing on “full building” BIM. One of the greatest benefits of this software is its ability to create a collaborative, virtual information base on a project that can shared and utilized by the architect, surveyors and engineers, contractors and subcon-tractors and finally the owners. Dynalectric, KDC Systems an electrical subcontractor and an EMCOR Company, is an industry leader in BIM utilization with their modeling efforts targeted at maximizing prefabrication to make their team more efficient so that they can deliver on time and under budget. Their latest efforts include embedding calculations into the BIM, creating code-checking objects and modeling everything, down to devices. This seminar will provide both a general overview and advanced information about Building Information Modeling (BIM). Including; how BIM is being used at Dynalectric and in today’s construction industry and how it affects you! Participants will walk away with a stronger knowledge base of BIM and best practices to share

with their companies.

The Ten Commandments to Prevent Your Next Project from Cratering 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. Andre Campbell, Hansen Bridget, and Marilyn Klinger, Sedgwick LLP, will team up to present the ten commandments for preventing your next project from imploding, financially and otherwise. This entertaining and interactive presentation will cover from start to finish—procuring the project, understand-ing the project and the project contract terms, managing and documenting the project, and everything in between. Learn from construction lawyers who help their clients obey the ten commandments but also protect their clients when they have been violated.

Construction Safety of Excellence Awards Luncheon 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Plan to join us for the 25th Annual Construction Safety of Excellence Awards Luncheon. This annually held luncheon both highlights and recognizes the outstanding safety programs and leadership efforts our member companies and their teams make in California, every day, improving safety culture and helping keep employees free from harm. Bob Downey, Keynote Speaker, will be sharing the History of Safety in California at this prestigious awards event. This is a ticketed event.
