Tips For the Buiiness .Woman Who Runs a Home.

The business woman was tired of living in a boarding house, and the domestic instinct buried deep in every woman's heart cried aloud for a place of her own—a place where she could express her individuality. Her friends protested that it. was impossible to attend to her work and a home, but the business woman was determined to give it a trial. For awhile she struggled valiantly, striving to evolve some method whereby she could manage her tiny apartment with a minimum of labor, and It finally resolved Itself to a process of elimination, She found that if she eliminated half the furniture and brlCfa-brac a great deal of the work; was also ruled out, besides lending an air of dignity and space to the room. Instead of using whi te curtains, bureau scarfs, etc., she used those of a dark ecru. These could be shaken out to remove the dust and needed very few visits to the laundry in comparison with the white ones. Table covers were eliminated entirely and dollies were substituted. Her floors were bare of every vestige of carpet, and a few iinmll rugs were scattered here and there. Filially there was no "profusion of cut glass and" silverware to clean, just a few pieces of old blue china, which blended harmoniously with the scheme of the dining room.

Originally nil rubber came froiu the | yalloy of the Amazon. Wlu>ii it was I first discovered no one IIIIOWH. At nny rate, whuii>he first white men, following along after Ooluialuiu, visited South AmerioiL they found the Indians phi.v-

Still, 200 years and more went l)yJt «ud, while many wise men believed fhis'elastic, cohesive, tmiiermenblesub-tdniicp ought to be fuH-of UKOIU1IU?K«, »n>body found any way to use it to nny Advantage—It, was so brittle in cold v-c-iituc-r and so disposed to get soft in In if weather. Up to that time rubber was so cheap that .shljw from {South America sometimes used it as ballast, taking their chances of seliing It "for what they could get in some American port. With the discovery of the' vulcanizing jirocess riifolwr took on a new hue and it new value, and the tropics were pa rched for It everywhere. When Ijlessing the an t i - s lavery campaign of Card ina l Lavigerie , Pope Leo X H I r e m a r k e d : "Opinion is more than ever queen of the world. I t is on this you m u s t work . You will only conquer by m e a n s of opinion." The occasion is now r ipe to invoke p u b l i c ' opinion; to tes t i ts power. Th roughout our c o u n t r y m a s s mee t ings a r e be- , lug held to protest* aga ins t t h i s en- j s layement of the Belgians. The following le t t e r WAS received by the Commit tee which. lias a r r a n g e d the Mass Meet ing to profi-st aga in s t the ens l avemen t of the Be lg ians :

"The case for proles,! a g a i n s t the forcing of Be lg i ans io go to Germany" to work t h e r e s.em.s to me t spec ia l ly c lear . T h e r e is now no American pa r ty pol i t ics in it. There need not be even w a r pol i t ics in it. 1 can imag ine G e r m a n s , OTtaiu ly German-Amer icans , feeling the depor t a t ion a g r i evous w r o n g . The policy is one" plainly in viola t ion of the ru l e s of w a r ; — i t involves h a r d s h i p s and cruel t ies u n s p e a k a b l e ; why should not h u m a n e people everywhere lift their voices against, i t?

Moreover th i s Belgian o u t r a g e is cont inuous . I t is not like ihe or ig ina l invasion, a n ac t consummated before the world could s t i r . The depor ta t ions a r e going on, so t h a t n e u t r a l na t ions h a r e the o p p o r t u n i t y to make the i r in-Bignatioii felt.
