IntroductionThis adventure is set in Wakulla,

Florida in the 1990s. With someslight modifications it can be used inother times and places.

The adventure pits the intrepidinvestigators against a cult dedicatedto aiding an underground aquaticevil.

Keeper’s BackgroundThe following provide the

background information the Keeperneeds to run the adventure.

Untold eons ago the earth wasvisited by strange and terriblebeings. Among these was the horridentity Tulushuggua. Tulushugguafound the water filled crevices of theearth to its liking and squirmed itsway deep into the earth’s crust. There Tulushuggua spawned itsbrood of Tulush who spread out

through the dark caverns in searchof food.

When man arose he encounteredthe Tulush. Some men, impressed bythe power of the creatures, worshipped them and formed cults.

Most of these cults eventuallyperished, but some lived on invarious isolated parts of the world.

Several years ago, a promisingyoung graduate student namedHayes encountered one of these cultsand found their activities appealing. With his abilities, Hayes was able tocontact more sophisticated cults witha worldwide agenda. Drawn into themadness, Hayes agreed to work forthe cults and chose to go back to hisbeginnings by reviving aTulushuggua cult.

Hayes needed a place to locate hiscult and he was able to purchase aplot of land in Wakulla, Florida.Naturally, he selected a piece of landwith a sinkhole so that he mightcontact the Tulush.

Hayes selected Janet Reuben to aidhim in his endeavors. When Hayesrealized he needed help to lurepeople into his planned cult, hesought Pete Smith, a religious conman. Smith turned out to besomething of a disappointment forHayes, which is where the adventurebegins.

Getting the PCs InvolvedOne of the investigators will be

contacted by a distant cousin,“Preaching” Pete Smith. Smith, whohas been helped out by theinvestigator before (the Keeper willneed to make up a plausible story)will naturally seek the aid of hisrelative again. Smith will tell thefollowing tale:

“As you no doubt recall, I havealways been a religious man.

Page 2: Scenario Sinkhole

Recently I heard God’s calling andanswered by leading a flock of thefaithful to a parcel of land in Florida. There we kept the faith and soughtspiritual enlightenment.

All was going well, but two of myfellow preachers decided that it wastime to try something new. They gotinto terrible things. Blasphemousthings. I tried to steer them back ontothe path of the righteous, but theyheeded not my words. Eventually Iwas driven out, but not beforeacquiring some of the books theyseemed to use for inspiration. Ipaged through the books but briefly, but the horrors within nearlybleached my hair white.

I considered going to theauthorities, but I realized how crazymy story would sound. And, ofcourse, they haven’t really brokenany laws.

They might just be harmlesslunatics, but I have a feeling they areup to something terrible. Maybesomething like what happened withJim Jones or in Waco.

You are the only one I could thinkof to turn to, to save my poor lostflock.”

The investigator will recall thatSmith did have some religiousleanings, but that he leaned moretowards the con game. However, itwill be recalled that Smith wasn’treally a bad sort and he will soundsincere. If the investigator agrees tohelp, Smith will join up with theinvestigators and start them on theirinvestigation.

InvestigationThe following details the

information the investigators canacquire during the course of theirinvestigation

SmithIt is likely that Smith will be the

starting point of the investigation. He will be able to provide theinvestigators with the followinginformation:

“I was down on my luck and shortof cash when the good Lord broughtan opportunity to me. Two fellowbelievers, or so I regarded them atthe time, came to me and spoke oftheir desire to establish a place forthe faithful. These two, Daniel Hayesand Janet Reuben, said that theyowned a piece of land in Florida thatwould be ideal for a religious retreat. They informed me that I had beenchosen for my reputation for gainingthe trust of other faithful individuals. To make a long story short, we wentto Florida, where the land waslocated and began constructing ourlittle earthly city on the hill.

All went well for several months asthe faithful came and renouncedtheir worldly goods so that theymight join us. Then things began toget weird. Hayes and Reuben beganto preach about the end times tocome, but what they said wasn’t inthe Good Book. They spoke of thosewho once were and shall be againand how those who join the winningside will survive and those who donot…well, they won’t survive.

I was concerned about all this, butHayes was able to sooth my fears. But not for long. About three monthsago Hayes had the faithful startdigging into a sinkhole that is on thegrounds. Eventually, they built aconcrete dome over it. At nightHayes led strange masses in thedome. I considered confronting him,but one of the few remaining faithfulfellows warned me that Hayesmeant to deal with me. I took hiswarning seriously and made goodmy escape, taking with me some

Page 3: Scenario Sinkhole

books and other items that Hayesseemed to value.”

Smith will be able to provideadditional useful information, suchas descriptions of Hayes and Reubenand the layout of the compound.Smith knows that Hayes and Reubenare up to something very unusualand potentially quite dangerous. Hehas just skimmed through Hayes’books, but it was enough to convincehim not to read more.

Hayes Books and ItemsSmith took ten books, several

papers and a floor from Hayes.(Handout #1) is actually a map of thecaves under the compound. The tileis a normal floor tile, except for theetched map on the surface.

Seven of the books that Smithacquired are fairly standard occultworks and contain nothing of use tothe investigators (at least in terms ofthis adventure). Two of the booksare mostly useless, but do containsome interesting references.Conveniently, Hayes dog-eared thepages that should interest theinvestigators.

The first book, Old Cults of Mystery(1921 by Able Hastings) contains thefollowing:

“There are a few references to‘those who dwell beneath the earth, yet swim rather than burrow’ and allof them are disturbing. It is said thata great evil god dwelled within the“aquatic crevices” of the earth andsent his minions to the surface tohave dealings with certain corruptmen. The most complete work onthis topic is contained withinHumbolt’s Forbidden Cults.”

The second book, Forbidden Cults(1901 by Brian Humbolt), containsreferences to several cults around theworld who worshipped a beingcalled Tulushuggua. According to

Humbolt this being, which dwelleddeep within the earth, was served byhideous demons called Tulush.Humbolt describes the Tulush as ahorrid mix between eels and squidand he does not even attempt todescribe the horror of Tulushuggua.

While Humbolt’s work issurprisingly objective and scientific(a successful occult roll will indicatethat the investigator remembers thatHumbolt committed suicide in anasylum in England), he does wandera bit into rather unusualspeculations. One of the oddest is hishypothesis that the various cultswho worshipped Tulushuggua didnot come about their beliefs in anynormal manner. He asserts that theseremote and isolated cults wereactually linked together by floodedunderground caves through whichthe Tulush traveled. Humbolt assertsthat this is the best explanation as tohow such scattered cults could havenearly identical rituals and beliefs.Needless to say, this hypothesis wasridiculed by the majority of thosewho read it. However, Humbolt wascompletely right. Reading the morespeculative and unusual parts of thebook costs the reader 0/1 Sanity andgains the reader a 1% increase inCthulhu Mythos.

Smith also grabbed several loosepages that seemed important toHayes. These pages are in English, but contain many unusual symbols. An occult roll will reveal that manyof the symbols bear some similaritywith occult symbols, mostly thosealleged to deal with earth, caverns, water and summoning. A Know rollwill also reveal that many of thesymbols seem to be mathematicaland geometrical. A successfulPhysics roll will reveal that some ofthe symbols bear a resemblance tocertain unusual equations relating to

Page 4: Scenario Sinkhole

space and time. The pages containthe spell contact Tulush as well assome vivid descriptions of the waysand practices of the Tulush. Readingthe pages gives the reader a chanceto learn the spell at the cost of 1/1D3Sanity Points and a 1% increase inCthulhu Mythos.

Another SourceIf the investigators decide to look

for additional references in a largelibrary (such as the one at FloridaState) they can locate a smallreference in Gerald Jone’s 1966 OddFlorida. “In addition to the pleasanttale of the fountain of youth, thereare many not so pleasant Spanishtales. One story speaks of a smallband of Spanish soldiers who set outfrom Fort San Marcos in search ofanother party of men who had failedto return. Based on the references tosinkholes, it is likely that these menreached the area now known asWakulla. The men supposedlyencountered one of the missing men.The man was crazed and spoke ofthe ‘devil’ that dwelt within thewater filled hollows. He told thesoldiers how something lashed outof the water, dragging his fellowsinto the hole. He said that there wasso much blood that all the holes inthe area were tinted red. When theman was brought back to the fort, allhe could do was recite the following:‘veins run through the earth and herblood is water. Things swim in herblood…things that should not be.’ Itis said that the man was sent back toSpain and died twenty years latter ina monastery, still reciting thewords.”

Investigating in Wakulla andTallahassee

The investigators might decide toseek additional information inWakulla and Tallahassee.

Investigators might chose to talk topeople in Wakulla and Tallahassee(the capital of Florida, which is ashort distance from Wakulla. Peoplehave heard that a new cult/religionhas taken up residence in Wakulla. The general consensus is that thepeople are weird, but harmless. Some people, in light of Waco, areworried and local law enforcementhas been keeping a subtle eye on thecompound. However, the membersof the group, who call themselvesthe faithful, have done nothingillegal.

Tallahassee’s local paper, TheDemocrat did an article on the group, but it is more or less a fluff piece.

If the investigators spend sometime in Wakulla and speak with thelocals, they will notice that a few ofthe locals suspect that somethingamiss is going one. One local, RalphBrown, even caught a glimpse of aTulush in a sinkhole. If theinvestigators win his trust, theretired electrician will tell thefollowing story: “I was out walkingmy dog at the sinks when he startedbarking and growling at somethingin the water. I thought it might havebeen a gator that managed to get inthere, but then I saw it was biggerthan any gator I’d ever seen. Then itdove under. I waited about fortyminutes for it to come up, but itnever did.”

The FaithfulThe investigators might decide to

talk to some of the faithful or evenvisit the compound. The faithfulrarely leave the compound, exceptfor brief trips to purchase food andother necessities. The faithful will bewilling to talk about the great joys of

Page 5: Scenario Sinkhole

being one of the faithful, but havebeen carefully schooled not to revealanything incriminating. If theinvestigators seem unusual orsuspicious, the faithful will be sureto report to Hayes.

If the investigators are persuasiveand are able to convince one of thecult leaders that they are interestedin joining, they can be taken on atour of the compound. Naturally, thecultists will be careful to conceal anyevidence of unusual activities.

The investigators might wish to tryto go under cover in the cult. This ispossible, but very risky as the cultleaders will try to drive new recruitsinsane (and hence trustworthy) assoon as possible.

Hayes and ReubenIf the investigators are able to get

access to the relevant records orcontact people who knew him (theexact details are left to the Keeper’sdiscretion) they can learn that Hayeswas a promising younganthropologist at the University ofMichigan. After working on a projectinvestigating cults, he suddenlydropped out of school and beganassociating with various cultsaround the world.

There is little information availableon Reuben, except that she workedfor a short time as a minor actress(mainly bit parts and commercials). She does have a police record: onearrest for possession of illegal drugs. The police report also notes that shewas arrested with several otherpeople who were said to be membersof a cult.

The DiverBecause of the deep spring and the

fact that mammoth bones have beenfound there, Wakulla Springs is a

site that is sometimes investigated bydivers and researchers. There iscurrently a minor project going onduring the time span of theadventure. Unfortunately for theproject members, hungry Tulush areactive in the area.

While the investigators are in theprocess of investigating two diversin the Wakulla caves will encountera Tulush. One will be killed and theother will barely escape. TheTallahassee Democrat will run a storyon the event. The following sectionwill be of interest to theinvestigators:“Tragedy in Wakulla Springs:Diving in Wakulla Springs is adangerous undertaking and recentevents brought this fact home. Twoexperienced divers, Charles Waltersand Reginald Brisk, went into thecaves after taking extensiveprecautions. Tragically, only CharlesWalters emerged from the darkwaters. A local man, TimothySpringer , found the diverwandering in the woods andpromptly took him to theTallahassee Memorial Hospital…”

If the investigators talk to TimothySpringer, they will find that heseems to be a friendly andconscientious person. Springerworks in a local bank and enjoyswalking going to the park afterwork. If the investigators talk toSpringer, he will have the followingto say:

“I was in the woods, looking atsome birds when I saw a man in awet suit wandering about the woods. He seemed to be injured, so I went tohelp him. When I got closer, hestarted yelling something about amonster in the spring. I figured hemight have gotten the bends, sincethe spring is actually quite deep. So Irushed him to the hospital. I’ve seen

Page 6: Scenario Sinkhole

him a couple times since then and heseems much better.”

If the investigators go to seeWalters, they will have to talk thenurse into allowing them to visit (byusing Fast Talk). If they get into hisroom, Walters will be willing to talkto the investigators if they arepleasant and have a plausible story. His initial story will be that he andhis friend simply had a divingaccident and that he got the bendswhen he rushed to the surfacebecause he was out of air.

If an investigator makes aPsychology roll, it will be noticedthat Walters appears to be uncertainabout his answer and that he mightbe hiding something.

If the investigators are able topersuade Walters, he will tell thefollowing story after making theinvestigators promise not to repeatit:

“Okay, I didn’t run out of air. Wewere diving in the springs and wehad spare tanks set up so we coulddecompress on the way up. Weweren’t in that deep anyway. Well, what seemed to have happened wasthis: Reggie was out of ahead of meand going deeper when his lightpicked up something. Somethingbigger than a man and moving. Atfirst I thought it was a big gator, butthey don’t go that deep, at leastwhen they are alive. It came in fastand I got a better look at the partsthat Reggie’s light revealed. I couldsee tentacles, teeth, and flippers. Icould see Reggie panic and flail at itwith his light, then the light wasfalling to the bottom, its spinningbeam illuminating a new moment ofhorror with each rotation…the waterwent red…the beam was goingthrough red tinted water…I brokefor the surface as fast as I could. Thenext thing I remember was waking

up here. It all seems like anightmare, and I’m not sure if any ofit happened. It might just be somesort of hallucination.”

Walters will not be willing to saymuch more than this and willprobably not be able to recover intime to be of any help to theinvestigators. If word gets out thatWalters thinks he saw a monster,Hayes might decide to eithereliminate Walters or try to take stepsto cause people to suspect thatWalters might have killed his friend.

If the investigators check on theofficial investigation, they will learn(if they are suitably persuasive) thataccidents have happened in thesprings and that no sort of wrongdoing is suspected, Some attemptshave been made to locate recover thebody of the missing diver, but withno luck (since the Tulush devouredit).

MapThe adventure takes place mainly

in Wakulla. Wakulla is short distancefrom Tallahassee, which is thecapital. Tallahassee is a small citywith an airport, two universities(Florida State and Florida A&M),two malls and not too much else.

Wakulla is a fairly rustic area andis best known for its sinkholes andWakulla Springs State Park, whichcontains a beautiful stretch of riverfed by a natural spring. The area ispopulated by a wide variety ofwildlife, including many alligators. The area is most famous for themammoth bones found in the springand the various films that were shotthere (various Tarzan films, oneAirport Film, and the Creature fromthe Black Lagoon).

Compound Map

Page 7: Scenario Sinkhole

The compound is located in awooded and isolated area ofWakulla. The compound issurrounded by a six-foot highwooden fence. During the day thecultists spend their time doingvarious chores and participating invarious rituals. At night the cultistssometimes participate in rituals, butthey generally tend to turn in early. The guard posts at the corners of thecompound are manned twenty fourhours a day.

1. Guard Post: The guard postsare wooden towers with metalplates reinforcing the woodenwalls. Each post is equippedwith a small search light. Thereis always at least one armedcult “tough” in each guard post.

2. Parking lot: The cult vehicles,an assortment of cars andtrucks, are kept here.

3. Restroom and kitchen: One halfof building contains showers, toilets and sinks. The other halfcontains a large kitchen and

4. Barracks: This is the sleepingand living area for the cultmembers. It is broken into threesections. One section is for themale cult members, the secondis for the female cult membersand the last section is acommon area/dinning area. The barracks is typically emptyduring the day, except for mealtimes and when the cultists arecleaning.

5. Temple: This is the cults normalworship area. It is laid out like achurch, with an altar area at oneend and pews in the main area. The religious motif is Christian,to provide a plausible cover forthe cult. The cultists conducttheir normal rituals in thetemple. The rituals involveunusual chants that bear no

resemblance to main streamreligions (this will be obvious tonearly anyone who hears orsees a ritual). Naturally, the cultmembers do not conduct theirtrue rituals in front of outsiders.

6. Hayes’ House: Hayes andReuben live in this house. Thehouse has four rooms: a livingroom, two bedrooms and abathroom. Since Smith stoleHayes’ books and papers, thereare no books to be found. Hayesdoes have a PC with an internetconnection. The hard drivecontains encrypted files, one ofwhich contains the sameinformation as to be found inthe stolen papers. The otherfiles contain cult records andsuch. Because Hayes has used acommercial encryptingprogram, the files are almostcertainly inaccessible to theinvestigators. There are variousemails from other cultistsaround the world on the harddrive. However, the emailaddresses are all throughservices such as Hotmail andYahoo (and hence impossible totrace) and the emails are all in acode that makes the email seeminnocuous or even spam. If aninvestigator chooses to try tofind some sort of code, theprocess will take 1D4+4 monthsof dedicated work. Theinvestigators might take thecode to an expert, which wouldsave them a great deal of time.If the emails are decoded, thenthe investigators will be able togain some useful informationthat could well lead to otheradventures (at the Keeper’sdiscretion).

7. The Dome: The dome is madeof concrete and reinforced with

Page 8: Scenario Sinkhole

steel. The is only one door in,which is made of steel andequipped with a state of the artlock. The interior consists of anarrow ledge around the poolin the center. There is divinggear in the dome and the poolleaves into the caves detailed ontheir own map.

Caves MapThe caves are accessed via the

concrete dome in the compound. Thecaves are mostly natural, but haveclearly been worked on with tools inplaces.

1. Pool: This pool was clearlyshaped by tools. It leads downinto the actual caves.

2. Tunnels: These caves lead offdeep into the earth. If theinvestigators go down them, they might well get lost, especially if they are notexperienced cave divers. Hayeshas mapped out the tunnelsand has an escape path thatleads to nearby sinkhole.

3. Chamber: This chamber showssigns of having been workedwith tools. There is a tunnelthat goes far into the earth inthe center. This is where theTulush come when they arecalled. On the floor of thechamber is a locked waterproofcase that contains an enchantediron rod (3 points of POW in it). This is the rod that Hayes usesto summon the Tuush. If theinvestigators touch the rod, there is a 50% chance a Tulushwill be close enough to sensethis. The Tulush will rush intothe chamber, ready to tear theinvestigators into bite sizedmorsels.

ActionWhile it is not possible to predict

the exact actions of the players, thefollowing guidelines should provehelpful to the Keeper.

DivingAquatic minded investigators

might elect to dive in WakullaSprings in search of what might haveattacked the divers. Since the park isa state park, the investigators willeither need to get permission (whichmight prove difficult in light of therecent episode) or sneak in. Thespring is extremely deep and if theinvestigators are limited by SCUBA,they will not make it that far. If theyuse a remote submersible or asimilar device, they have a slightchance of finding the dive light (thebattery is dead) and perhaps someother pieces of the diver’sequipment.

If the investigators decide to try topoison the springs or use explosives, they stand an excellent chance ofbeing arrested. Also, such tacticswould do a great deal of harm to thenative life. In any case, the Tulushare unlikely to be affected by suchtactics.

The Keeper will need to decidewhether the investigators encountera Tulush or not. The chances of thishappening are fairly slight, unlessthe investigators take appropriatesteps to attract their attention (suchas by using the spell). Needless tosay, an encounter with a Tulush inthe water would probably proveextremely dangerous.

Provoking the CultIf the investigators take action that

arouses the suspicion of the cultists, they will take steps to learn moreabout what the investigators are

Page 9: Scenario Sinkhole

doing. If Hayes perceives theinvestigators as a threat, he will takesteps to deal with them. Hayes willbegin with some subtle attempts, such as sabotaging their vehicles ortrying to get them arrested. If thatdoesn’t work, he will take steps tohire some local criminals to take careof the investigators (use the statisticsfor the cultist toughs).

If the investigators are able tosurvive these attempts, Hayes willincrease his efforts. If he gets trulydesperate, he will try to lure theinvestigators into the concrete domein the compound so that the Tulushhe will call can kill them. As a lure,Hayes will probably have Reubenpretend to turn against the cult. Herstory will be that Hayes is planningto sacrifice a volunteer from the cult.If asked why she isn’t going to thepolice, Reuben will say that she fearsthat the police will not believe herand that even if they did believe her,the cultists would deny everything, including the sacrifice.

Attacking the CultistsMore aggressive investigators

might decide to simply attack thecultists. The compound will prove tobe a somewhat difficult target, sinceit is protected by a fence, guard postsand armed cultists.

If the investigators attack, thecultists will defend themselves. Ifgiven enough warning, Hayes willcall the police on his cell phone.Unless the investigators have beenable to win over the police, theauthorities will aid Hayes.

The Subtle ApproachMore subtle investigators might

take a less direct approach. Forexample, they might attempt to findenough evidence to get the police toarrest Hayes. They might also

fabricate evidence and get theauthorities to intervene. They mightalso attempt to win over enough ofthe locals so that they will be able tohave a free hand against the cultists.Or they might go to the heart of thematter and simply take Hayes andReuben out of the picture. If they arekilled or otherwise dealt with, thecult will collapse.

ConclusionThe adventure comes to an end

when either the cultists or theinvestigators are defeated.

The investigators are defeated ifthey are killed or driven away. Inthis case, Hayes will continue toexpand his cult until he is eventuallyable to purchase and control a largepart of the era. Hayes success willbring in other, more powerfulindividuals and evil will flourish inthis part of Florida. Thus, anysurviving investigators who returnwill face an even greater challenge.

If the investigators defeat Hayesand the cult, they should receive a1D6 Sanity point award. Keepersshould also give a few additionalpoints if the investigators manage todefeat the Tulush in the area. Theinvestigators should receive a loweraward if they defeat Hayes throughbrutal means, such as murdering allthe cultists.

Depending on how theinvestigators defeat Hayes, theymight be well regarded in the area orwanted criminals. If the investigatorshandle the situation well, the localpeople will be very pleased and willbe willing to help the investigators inthe future. If the investigators handlethe situation badly (excessiveviolence or injuring local people)they might end up as wanted men.

Page 10: Scenario Sinkhole

The Keeper might wish to use thisadventure as a lead in to “Pines &Sunshine” (in this issue). This can bedone by making some of the data onHayes’ computer informationrelevant to “Pines & Sunshine.”

In terms of appearance,a Tulush looks like a horrible mixbetween a finned eel and a squid. The front of a Tulush contains fourlong, squid-like tentacles with amouth in the center of the tentaclemass. The mouth is unusual andcontains a spiral of teeth that reachalmost to the stomach of thecreature. When the Tulush swims, the tentacles press together, streamlining the creature.

On either side of the “head” aretwo fluid filled bumps which serveas the Tulush’s sonar sense organs.Since a Tulush has no eyes, theymust rely on their highly effectivesonar to find their way and theirprey. The Tulush also make use ofsound to communicate. They havetheir own language as well as asimplified version they use to

communicate with humans (it is a bitlike morse code and enables humansto “talk” back by banging on a solidsurface). Their language sounds a bitlike that of whales, but soundsharsher and a bit menacing.

The skin of a Tulush ranges from adirty gray-white to a brownishwhite. The skin is smooth, ratherthan scaled. Tulush reek ofammonia, which makes it easy to tellwhen they are around.

Like sharks, a Tulush has cartilageinstead of true bones. The only hardparts of the Tulush are its shark-liketeeth (these teeth have beenmistakenly identified as belonging tosome sort of ancient shark).

Tulush tend to be very intelligentand have quite large and developedbrains. They use this intelligenceeffectively when they hunt their prey(other alien creatures) in the dark, water filled caves of the earth.

Tulush rarely come anywhere nearthe surface and only do so whenthey have been sent or called.

Tulush, like deep-diving seaanimals, are able to withstandchanges in pressure that wouldcripple or kill a human. They are alsocapable of staying at least an hourout of water, although they prefernot to do this.

In combat a Tulush will grab at itschosen victim with its four tentaclesand use them to pull the target intoits mouth.

Handout #2-Old Cults of Mystery (1921) by Able Hastings.

There are a few references to ‘those who dwell beneath the earth, yet swimrather than burrow’ and all of them are disturbing. It is said that a great evil goddwelled within the “aquatic crevices” of the earth and sent his minions to thesurface to have dealings with certain corrupt men. The most complete work onthis topic is contained within Humbolt’s Forbidden Cults.

Handout #3-Odd Florida (1966), Gerald Jones.

In addition to the pleasant tale of the fountain of youth, there are many not sopleasant Spanish tales. One story speaks of a small band of Spanish soldiers whoset out from Fort San Marcos in search of another party of men who had failed toreturn. Based on the references to sinkholes, it is likely that these men reachedthe area now known as Wakulla. The men supposedly encountered one of themissing men. The man was crazed and spoke of the ‘devil’ that dwelt within thewater filled hollows. He told the soldiers how something lashed out of the water, dragging his fellows into the hole. He said that there was so much blood that allthe holes in the area were tinted red. When the man was brought back to the fort, all he could do was recite the following: ‘veins run through the earth and herblood is water. Things swim in her blood…things that should not be.’ It is saidthat the man was sent back to Spain and died twenty years latter in a monastery, still reciting the words.

Handout #4-Tallahassee DemocratTragedy in Wakulla: Diving in Wakulla Springs is a dangerous undertaking andrecent events brought this fact home. Two experienced divers, Charles Waltersand Reginald Brisk, went into the caves after taking extensive precautions.Tragically, only Charles Walters emerged from the dark waters. A local man,Timothy Springer , found the diver wandering in the woods and promptly tookhim to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital…
